Why does GP have a global ult that slows, has a large radius and gives almost no time to react?

Shouldn't his ult have less than global range, or a smaller radius, or a slightly longer delay before activating?

maybe when gp has lane presence/roam potential outside of his ult and is actually meta you can nerf it again.

I would be more than happy if he was somehow compensated for an ult nerf. Global range ultimates with no delay are a bad mechanic, imo, because if you're on the receiving end, you can't do anything about it (and that's extremely frustrating).

His ult has always been a thing, ever since before his rework.

Why is it all of a sudden a problem, now?

Because its broken lel

XIII Vanitas2 votes

Because it's one of those things that lacks counterplays and makes bot lane awful to play.

Basically, if GP's ult is up, you can neither play aggressively, nor play under your own tower, because he's going to throw that shit on your head and cut you off from your escape route or help his teammates dive you.

Because it's one of the many things without any counterplay that fuck bot lane.

Some things don't have, and don't need, counterplay. The damage on his ultimate is negligible, and it's a power play; if he ults bot lane, he's significantly weaker in his own lane. The jungler and top laner should use that knowledge and go aggressive on Gangplank, killing him or pressuring him away from his lane so they can take the top lane tower, maybe Rift Herald, steal some enemy jungle camps and get vision control of the top side.

Think strategically; Summoner's Rift is a lot bigger than just bot lane.

Champions shouldn't be balanced around a bad mechanic. Imagine if garren ulti was global and he could just execute people instantly as long as he had vision.

Could this be balanced? Yeah, he could be made weaker in lane to compensate but it would still be a bad mechanic.

Shen is the only other champion in the game that has a global or semi global ability that comes with no warning but arguably the main advantage of his ulti isn't the shield it is when he actually shows up and that has a warning.

And what's the enemy jungler going to do? Like you said, think strategically.

If GP is healthy enough to be safe under his own tower and he won't be dived because his own jungler is nearby, he traded a small amount of top lane pressure for a lot of bot lane pressure (and possibly a couple of assists or kills).

Global range ults should give some warning before activating because, when they don't (looking at you, Soraka), they're straight up unfair and frustrating to play against.

its a team based game at all stages of the game not a 1v1. hence why no one respects any one who says well im better than you at this champ 1v1 me as if 1v1s show off the skills of a champion and who has mastery over it.

It also does like no damage

XIII Vanitas1 votes

It does some damage if you're forced to stay inside it and thunderlord procs on you.

But the damage isn't really the main problem, it's its radius and utility: a big zone where you're slowed can easily cut you off from your only escape route.

TequilaZombie1 votes

The lack of damage on an ultimate ability from a Melee Hyper Carry is what justifies it's utility.

XIII Vanitas1 votes

Okay, let's keep the utility, but a global range with no warning whatsoever?

That's just frustratingly unfair.

Why would it need a warning anyway? It's easy to escape from this radius as hell (and for that reason this ult was considered a joke for few years) unless you're playing something really immobile and it has no damage early game. You play around it strategically, ask your toplaner to force him to use it on him (hard engage or something). If everything had counterplay then the strategy would be nonexistant in this game (RTS game without strategy LUL). Besides it's his only ability to make him relevant untill like 30th minute of the game and he heavily relies on his teammates to use it efficiently anyway.

Other global range abilities have delays/are telegraphed/both because of power they give (5 man nuke, game changing shield and teleporting tank to the middle of fight etc.) and how much reliable power they give. Karthus R forces you to zhonya, heal, use locket, Shen forces you to disengage and mostly renders team effort useless etc. the only exception is Soraka but Grevious Wounds makes her ult useless anyway. But GP? Most champions in the game are mobile enough to walk through it no problem, Death Daughter is delayed and can be dodged and it's damage hurts only when you plan on staying in it. It's not as reliable as those global abilities presented above.

gangplank is, always has been, and always will be a toxic design. Just like all the other bilgewater types. Its a theme thing I think

If they changed it he would gain AD scaling with his ult and become a beast. Trust me GP is in his place for a reason.

I honestly envy your Season 1 Bronze icon.

you mean how it has little damage and the slow is worse than most slows in the game despite being a ultimate on a melee champion.

Oh no! Not the global MF E! Whatever shall we do?
