Why would anyone use The Dark Seal?

With mana potions being removed, it makes no sense for this item to exist.

No one in their right mind would replace with

It has no mana regen, which because mana pots are gone, is incredibly needed on most mages. Also, it lets the other laner know you are going to play aggressive immediately. This knowledge alone will let them exploit you. If I see my opponent start this item, I'm going to bait out as many spells as I can, and once they're oom, slaughter them. I can understand, say, Kat using this. But the problem with that is, she has little kill pressure pre-6 so you wont be able to take advantage of it for a long time, in which case, its still useless.

But if you just play safe, and poke only, bringing along some mana regen masteries, or whatever, you'll be fine.

If you are going to play safe and poke, you are better off starting Doran's because it'll allow you to cast more spells. This item doesn't encourage or reward a safe/passive playstyle. In order to take advantage of it, you have to play aggressive.

No that'd be you. Not everyone needs or wants mana (i.e. Katarina ) and thus the power behind item 1082 is much better for how they are built.

Not facts at all. Most people that play kat usually rush the item as it gives her a lot of power, if you know how to use her and it.

I feel it was a dumb move to include this item in the game. The only reason anyone would buy this would be for item 3041 , and if you're building mejas anyway, you're either a smurf, lux, janna, or you don't know what you're doing.

It's for Katarina, basically.

Katarina has no need for mana regen and the extra health regen and buildpath is useful if she wants to go Mejai's.

You fail to realize that the seal doesn't have to be your first item , you might as well buy dark seal on your first back if you see a big snowballing potential or you just want a power boost to win lane similar to double dorans , do note that dark seal can be upgraded so it really gives your inventory some more flexibility in contrast to double dorans.

You fail to realize that Doran's would still be the superior item. It gives you the same amount of AP PLUS HP and regen without a conditional passive. Even if you don't buy a Doran's you would be better off investing the gold in your first item instead.

I build it every game on Morgana mid.

The 100 extra mana helps mana regen by making your mana pool larger. I have almost no mana issues with it. It has a cap of 45AP. That's huge for a starting item. It promotes safe play so you get stacks. It is part of a recipe, so if you're ahead you can do more than just sell it.

For anyone who doesn't feed it's a pretty decent starting item.

Um, red pot in season 3? Was a viable and used start from bronze to LCS. And it got kills.
