Edge of Night should have never existed

I don't want this to be another thread complaining about this item because we have enough of those. Riot has already said they are nerfing EoN, so there's no point. However, I don't want to talk about the item per se, I want to talk about its role in regards to the game. Edge of Night was designed so assassins could engage fights reliably without getting CCed. As stated in the Patch 6.22 Notes:

More than any other class, assassins are too easily shut down by stray or ambient crowd control. We’re giving them some ability to plan for—and avoid— interruption as they dive in, at the cost of some slot efficiency compared to other assassin items.

So, this item was literally designed to stop assassins from getting outplayed. Why is this a problem? The entire assassin play style is meant to be high risk and high reward. However, Edge of Night was designed as basically a middle finger to that design philosophy. This item completely eliminates the "risk" involved with being an assassin. See, the problem isn't that EoN is incredibly powerful (even though it is), the problem is that it is breaking core gameplay philosophy, rules, and playstyles.

If an item was made that gave Juggernauts insane amounts of movement speed it would be a problem. Why? Because a Juggernauts major weakness is being kited. When an item is made that can remove a classes major weakness, there is a problem. And this is the case with Edge of Night. If Zed ults my ADC, I have a window to potentially save my carry and outplay Zed. However, with Edge of Night that window is shut. The only reliable means to deal with an assassin -- which is CC -- is gone. Even if I play correctly and land a Nami Q on Zed when he reappears, it wont matter. My ADC dies, Zed never had to worry about dying or being outplayed because there were no risk.

Edge of Night is overpowered not because it is overtuned, but because it is game breaking. So ... with that being said, it begs the question ...

Why was it allowed to exist in the first place?

there are multiple reasons why the item shouldn't exist as it is

  1. banshee's veil exists
  2. maw and scimitar exist
  3. ranged carries benefit from it more than assassins

I mean zed is pretty terrible now so anything that buffs him is great.

Riot stated that the CC immunity was supposed to come at the cost of something else. With 60AD, 35MR and 15 Lethality... it doesn't look like there would be any downside to it. I mean... what higher AD or Armor Pen items would they be giving up? It outclasses Mercurial Scimitar and serves an execution orientated assassin better than Maw.

Except how the fuck do you deal with heal and exhaust as an assassin?

if anything they should have made it an AP + armor item...

I don't understand why riot keeps making armor pen items that have resistances with them. And this is coming from a player who LOVES armorpen since i started.

Zed isn't even the biggest problem here.

Kha'Zix bursts you down in less than a second with absolutely 0 counterplay if he has EoN.

I can at least deny a bit of Zeds damage if I flash after he reappears. With Kha'Zix you barely have the time to properly react.

Blocking 1 spell does not = CC immunity. Especially when any random spell can pop it. Hell an ashe can cast volley then ult you.

We have an item like that already. Righteous glory. It also has a slow. Edge of night was mostly designed so that the assassins with delays didn't just get clicked on by any cc and die to the instant damage of other classes. Can't nerf the assassins then tell them to fight someone who can stop them from moving and kill them just as fast. Did it work? not really but this is riot we didn't expect it to work out. Now after buffs instead of AD assassins being a joke they are just stupid. There is a reason edge of night wasn't pushing any assassin over the edge pre buff. The activa wasn't good enough to justify how awful lethality's scaling was.
