Why You Shouldn't Think Supporting Is Easy

TTVSushiDevourer··34 votes·4,003 views

Hey everyone, been coming across a lot of posts/threads from various places that have really been bashing supports in terms of skill required and build path. Im going to list a few reasons i've been seeing constantly and try to counter argue the statement. A will stand for answer.

  1. Supports don't have to CS, therefore it is an easy/mindless role.

A- This is probably one of the statements i have been seeing the most. Yes, supports do not have to focus on csing, except for relic shield procs of course. I personally dont find csing as a very taxing activity, once you get to a certain level of game knowledge you understand the amount of damage "X" champion does and when to auto/use a skill. While the support does not have to focus on CS they do have to focus on map awareness, where wards are going down, timing summoners and ward timers etc.

  1. "Why didn't you buy sightstone yet"

A- With the new addition to trinkets and the "new" ability that allows you to stack 2 wards i don't believe that sightstone is that important anymore. Technically that is "four" wards bot lane. Each ward level one lasts 60 seconds with a CD of 180 seconds on the trinket. However after buying the trinket it begins to stack another ward. So say you get to river by 30 seconds and you both drop a defensive ward, the next ward would be up by 3:30. If you then chain wards one at a time there is only a small window when the lane is unwarded. Also with the CD decreasing and ward time increasing there is less and less time of no vision. Plus the fact that pinks are 75 gold go buy one its awesome value!

  1. "Why are you building damage"

A- This is a pretty controversial topic in general. I see pros and cons to it. While you only do build damage on AP supports its very small amounts. If your support is building more than 2 items for damage they aren't really focusing on supporting. Few items i see worth it are obviously Frostqueens, nobody is going to get mad at you for building that. Also i have a personal preference with ryleighs due to the amount of Brand i play. Dont get mad at your support if they have 2 ap items and the rest are for the team.

  1. Picking an Ap support does not mean the support is trolling.

A- I've ran into this across so many threads and in game. If someone picks Lux, Vel'koz, Brand etc it does not mean that they are trying to ks in lane and build damage. These are all viable supports and in most cases, thanks to the new dynamic que, a real support main trying to win the lane with their favorite most comfortable champion.

Also just in general don't play the blame game if someone dies. In a lane where synergy is most important a non hostile environment is very important. There was probably something both of you could have done better so don't worry about it.

Thank you everyone hope you enjoy.

Easy 2 steps to know if youre a good support or not

  1. Do you not autoattack in the early game?
  2. Do you stand behind your adc while playing an aggressive support champion?

If the answer is yes to both then you shouldnt play support

MoonToonEx1 votes

OMG, this!

This type of shit made my interest in playing ADC just degrade overtime. I'm just sitting at my computer screaming "WHY? Why are you wiggling behind me like I'm your damn meat shield? Why are you not harassing? Why are you legit doing nothing but missing your once-a-blue-moon skill shots?". I've seen this time and time again. TK playing like a passive flower behind me, Thresh that wont do a damn thing to the enemy.

You also have to know your match up. I was Trist with a TK support vs a Varus and Soraka. He's harassing them good, keeping them busy I figure ... then he rages at me for not trying to go in with him. I'm like WTF are you going on about? That's a Raka Lane ... you don't attack "them", you either kill Raka or try to harass the best you can..

dude seriously.. i main support it's so fucking easy. i got to gold putting almost no effort in and winning 80% of my games last season just because i am good at leona.

all you have to do is babysit. ward some shit. make sure your adc doesn't die. ult occasionally. win the game.

TTVSushiDevourer2 votes

Gz on the rank man.

shyv2 votes

i dont claim to be good at this game or high ranked, but support is easy and probably the easiest role to climb with imo. literally all you have to do is not feed and you'll get carried like 70% of the time.

TTVSushiDevourer3 votes

Id say its a bit easier to play support while in a dynamic que. Solo que supporting is a tad more difficult depending on your team willing to work with you. You dont have to claim that man everyones entitled to their opinion [slayer-pantheon-thumbs]

shyv2 votes

honestly i have no idea what gz means so i assumed you were trying to start a fight

that's what i assume every time i get a notification on here because the boards are .. a bit immature.

TTVSushiDevourer1 votes

Meant gratz :D lol its okay im just trying to make content for a blog xD

shyv1 votes

OH LMAO

well thank u

what kind of blog are u running?

TTVSushiDevourer2 votes

XD well its in development right now still havent fully made it yet. I plan on it being focused on patch notes obviously and trying to work as a team. I feel that if we can create a better community the game would just get even better.

shyv1 votes

i agree! i love talking to other league players outside of league and learning more about the game together. places like /r/summonerschool have helped me improve a lot and the people there are always friendly. it would be a lot easier for everyone to improve if questions weren't always met with hostility.

on the boards i see simple questions like, hey im level 10 and just started playing, can someone help me learn how to build my main? get downvoted into oblivion. shouldn't be like that.

TTVSushiDevourer3 votes

Everythings met with hostility withp most of the community sadly you just have to hope for the best lol.

Beldair1 votes

Yea...if the LoL community stopped being hostile, more ppl would have fun and you could get better.

shyv1 votes

exactly. so many times i've heard people say, "what do i build on this champ, what do i max first, who should we be focusing, what does smiting the krugs do" etc etc and the answer is always "how do you not know that you fucking noob" instead of like, helpful advice that could actually win the game,

Beldair1 votes

I know how that is....i've asked in game how i should build a certain champ when i have never really played them. Or i get the lovely "That champ doesn't belong in that role, reported for aiding enemy team" when i decide to go Renekton support or Maokai mid.

They fail to realize that this is a game, not life. It is meant to be enjoyed and interact with others from around the country and world.

shyv1 votes

yeah i really don't care about winning anymore. all i care about right now is having fun. if that means playing off meta garbage and losing constantly just so i get to enjoy the game at all, so be it lol

last season i enjoyed the game a lot and wanted to get to gold, but this season it's like, fuck it, everything is unbalanced, wards are gone, games are snowbally, and i don't want to play whatever champ is fotm, so i'll take the loss over winning and not enjoying the game

Leona is easy=/= support is easy. Why do people act like the support role is not affected by the bearings of skill caps and skill floors? You're winning as a Leona--a support that was originally built for solo lane cc tank teamfighter. She's got a very fluid, logical, and easy to use kit; with skillshots that are very impactful and easy to land, and that also do damage.
Play Thresh. Play Alistar. Play Janna. Play a champion with a high skill floor, or a nuanced champion that will dramatically lose the fight by simply misplacing or mistiming their abilities.

Furthermore, you have to duo lane as a support. Bad synergies between support and adc players can be a huge problem. For a new player, being able to rely on a friend in a duo lane is a better way to start than other possibilities, but that doesn't mean that duo lane is always a condition for an easier lane. After learning to play other lanes, I preferred top and mid to adc or support because I found it cumbersome to have to rely on others to help to succeed in the lane.

shyv1 votes

i mean, i have level 5 janna mastery but i don't see anything wrong with being a one trick pony. people that master one champ and play nothing but them climb way faster.. which is why i only lost 5 out of 27 games with leona last season. sure, i could have played other supports, but why would i? i win with leona the most and i enjoy playing her the most. it's not that i CAN'T play high skill cap champs, just happen to main a champ that is simple.

TTVSushiDevourer1 votes

If you are winning and having fun it doesnt matter if you play one champion or all the champions its whatever works for the player. So you do you

shyv1 votes

:D

Solitair2 votes

That doesn't matter. I'm saying that just because you climbed on a support that dominates low elo does not mean the role itself is flatly easy

shyv1 votes

i can play any support though, the role is pretty easy, i mained it for all of season 5

i only stopped playing it because it's a lot less fun now

Ariel the Cruel1 votes

i only stopped playing it because it's a lot less fun now

you should have played it before S4. ;p

shyv1 votes

Lol true. didn't start playing it until the new gold income items came out. feel bad for anyone that mained it before then. all you had was kage's lucky pick and gp10 runes

but at least back then they had proper vision control

Ariel the Cruel1 votes

but at least back then they had proper vision control

Not.... Really... Common misconception about the "good 'ol days". While it was common practice for the support to completely dispel the FoW. The reality, is that is was common practice for the winning team's support. The losing team actually had less vision control than they do now thanks to oracle's elixirs.

Comments on your points- 1: Supports do need to cs, just not all the time. ADC Dies, you need to be able to farm the wave under turret while avoiding a dive. 2: Sightstone is still important, as much for that small health boost as it is having extra wards so you can pressure lane mistakes of opponents with greater safety. IMHO, Tier 2 gold item before sightstone, possibly Boots before it as well, depending on your recall gold amounts. 3: Some damage does wonders for pushing the enemy off of CS and fear of hard CC and hard trades. 4: AP Supports bully lane matchups pretty well, just make sure it's a suitable match for the ADC and fits the teamcomp well (I've seen a Kalista with a Yasuo support work well, because the rest of the team comp had good CC/Poke/etc.)

Points of my own (most directed at ADC's)- If you're the ADC, the support isn't your lackey. If you make a bad decision, and we choose not to follow, it's not our fault you died (seriously, stop chasing through unwarded enemy jungle when mid and jungle are MIA). The support is allowed to secure kills if you're in danger of dieing, stop wasting flash to try to take it. Don't get tunnel visioned and ignore the enemy support. Ignoring them while trying to chase the enemy adc is only going to leave you too low to stay in lane and gain an advantage. Just push them out so you can stay in lane. You need to dodge skillshots, it's not the support's job to bodyblock everything (although obviously lifesaving ones should be). You want more wards? Buy a Pink, I've probably got one out and my sightstone is used up.

TTVSushiDevourer2 votes

Thanks dude. Most people see support as just an extra body, and if anyones at fault its always the support

Knoyle1 votes

One of the things I hate is when half the team actually thinks I'm only there to babysit the ADC all game. ALL game. When the laning phase is over that ADC better have enough sense because I'll be helping the top laner, the mid laner and sometimes following the jungler. And If you get fed early you better believe I'm roaming. I didn't buy a sightstone just to ward bot lane.

TTVSushiDevourer1 votes

Its actually good to roam around level 4 to pressure other lanes, mostly mid ofcourse. An adc can usually safely farm from a distance and you may get mid a kill.

Knoyle1 votes

Yeah but I've come to the problem that early on if i back and leave the ADC alone they tend to just die.... this is what keeps me glued to bot lane for a while.

Beldair1 votes

Thank you....about time more ppl stand up for the Support.

Of course i act as a bodyblock as Braum....but that's what his kit is there for :)

TTVSushiDevourer1 votes

BODYBLOCK AS BRAUM WHAT R U DOING lol xD

  1. Supports don't have to CS, therefore it is an easy/mindless role.

that argument is kind of counterintuitive because jungling is generally acknowledged to be the hardest role, and junglers dont have to cs either

TTVSushiDevourer1 votes

Jungling technically does get a Creep Score Also jungling is more about game knowledge

Mecha MaIphite1 votes

You don't actually last hit except when you tax or help someone push. I don't really see killing camps as actual last hitting, except maybe trying to steal an objective, and that doesn't happen very often.

TTVSushiDevourer1 votes

Yeah but you need to focus on pathing to the correct paths. Jungling the hardest wont go against that fact though

TTVSushiDevourer2 votes

I think that my grammar kind of messed up my second point so let me rewrite it a it. I mean that i dont believe people need to jump on supports if they do not purchase sightstone on first back. Sometimes i feel that upgrading your gold item is more relevant depending on the matchups.

mason water2 votes

i would buy actual support items but they suck so much ass its not worth the gold

DarkRitual2 votes

FQC active still is worth it though.

TTVSushiDevourer1 votes

The stats aren't to bad for something that gives health cdr and three wards, id say its a very fair item because its cheap

SpecterVonBaren2 votes

Compared to ADC? Yeah, support is easy. When I support we win more games because our carry actually gets peel.

~Sincerely A support main

TTVSushiDevourer1 votes

W? Ya talkin bout you and friends? I try not to compare roles to eachother. I dont see it as relevant because each player has a their own playstyle and champions have their own mechanics.

SpecterVonBaren2 votes

I have no friends, I'm just talking about in general, if I play ADC then the ADC gets no peel because I'm the only person that seems to do it.

Lady Hammerlock2 votes

My thought process "i can't trust my fucking adc" jungle comes in "Hey adc they are low maybe we can.." my adc flashes away even when we are 1 kill ahead i become a literal meat bag die then my adc walks into 3 people wastes heal and dies basically my typical support game

Every time the meta changes (by which I mean it basically stays the same; just some new ultra-damage champion du jour. Yesterday it was Zed and Yasuo, today it's Xin and Udyr), the Support is ALWAYS expected to pick up the slack that's left in its wake. That generally means they need to be the tank, the crowd control, the peeler, the ward mule, the range, the pusher, the defender, the healer, the buffer, and about a dozen other jobs, and all on a microscopic budget. I've even had to be the damage dealer on the team more often than not as the support simply because all four assassin mains on the team couldn't cut it, all the while taking endless abuse by everyone because three wards isn't enough to cover the entire map, wards that nobody is actually paying any attention to, while trying to direct people to greater objectives. Yeah, we killed three of the enemy team with no losses, now let's get a turret or take dragon and not try to kite half a jungle camp for a solid minute (you think this doesn't happen?!)

Every season, the rigors of the support magnify. You're required and expected to do more with increasingly less. Everyone went all AD melee assassin? That means you, as the support, have to do everything they can't, don't, or won't. That stacks up to quite a lot. It stacks up to too much, honestly, and THAT is what's killing the role, killing game balance, the community, and my sanity. Supports are required to carry entire oceans of water for the rest of the team and perform roles that are NOT what they are meant to do simply because no one else is able or willing to do it, and no one understands this or is willing to understand it. They're all too busy obsessing over that elusive Hexakill to think straight.

TTVSushiDevourer1 votes

Lol "Thresh why didnt you cc the zed when he ulted me". It happens far to often, i dont disagree that yes you do need to use your cc to peel but the way people bash after your cc chain is over ad its o cc its insane. You are expected to peel for adc and mid while you only have so many spells

Why the hell would you need to be the damage dealer if your team has FOUR assassins.

Axests2 votes

personally i don't see how someone COULD see support as easy. You're expected to not only keep vision on the correct objectives (usually on your own) at all times, but also be the one to keep map awareness and watch for ganks in lane phase. You're the one that usually has to make plays and protect the adc in lane phase, and then later in the game despite being underleveled and with less/weaker items are supposed to help your team win fights. Support is a role that requires a lot of practice not only on a mechanical side, but on a game knowledge/understanding side. While all roles need this to some extent, I feel support is the most active with this, followed by your jungler.
