Riot Loading Border Shenanigans!

So if anyone remembers when the 1st set of project skins released, if you bought them at full price for 1350RP (before they went on sale for 975RP) you got a snazzy First Strike border when you were loading into the game. Basically if you couldn't wait for the sale of the skins you got a fancy border in return, it was neat, you technically didn't have to pay more for the skin to get the border, it just allowed you to show that you were one of the first and you didn't mind paying the normal price for a skin.

Now the borders are back with the new Star Guardian skins, which is a line I love and wouldn't mind buying when they first release (I know they don't do sales right after anymore though). HOWEVER the loading border is 'conveniently' bundled in with the related champion icon which was not the case with the Project release, forcing you to pay more for a loading border even if you don't want the icon.

Honestly this is just BS. I wouldn't mind using more RP and buying the bundle if for example some of the profits were being added to the worlds payout, but they aren't, you simply have to pay for the borders this time. You pay an additional 425RP for the bundle whilst the icon by itself would only cost you 250RP, so you're basically paying 175RP for a loading in border, that in the past was free and just showed you didn't mind going the extra mile for Riot.

TLRD; you're paying for something that used to be a free thank you from Riot.

I can already see Riot losing some sales over this because of perfectionists unwilling to settle for borderless-skins that have borders, but unwilling to support this kind of business practice.

Naturally, Rito will misattribute this to the Star Guardian skins themselves.

Also btw they said (for star guardians) "the icon is tied to the border- even if it's not equipped. The only way to remove the border would be to remove the icon."

I mean im buying some bundles anyway because they look so cool and I wanna support Riot BUT.... idk about this sale... sketchy is the keyword i'd use

I feel like we are literally one step away from the bundles not even having skins but instead special cash rng boxes that give us special loot that we combine with special rewards from purchased missions...

My guess(not that I approve):

Since Riot is giving us free runes next seasons and they gotta start making up for the profit loss from IP refund somewhere. Hence Loading borders suddenly costing RP. That extra dollar goes a long way considering LoL's massive playerbase.

I dont think its just riot being "greedy" so much as its Rioters want want to keep their current paychecks so they're looking for ways to pinch a couple pennies out of the players for a while.

Project Ashe Katarina and Ekko needed special unlocks just to get the boards which are also tied to icons. So this isn't the first time they have done it.

Riot shit the bed on so much with this event. I had a whole thread typed up and when I saw that it was 5 pages long practically I just deleted it. Half of that that was my own salt as star Guardian is literally my favorite line and they dropped every single ball that they could have with it. Mission suck, game mode is glitchy and a pain in the ass, and this shit

I just find it insulting that they're adding on a higher price for the border when previously they were free with purchase during the first week. The math for a single First Star Edition (not the bundle) is: 1350 for skin 250 for icon So that's 175 for the border.

And 175 RP might not be a lot but as I said, you used to get the border as a reward just for buying the skin. I see this as them dipping their toes in the water to see just how much we're willing to put up with before we yank our money away.

(Put it this way. They used to release icons all the time for 1500 IP._ Once they realized it was something people wanted_, they started releasing them for RP only. It's very rare these days to see an icon release for IP purchase. )

I guess. But these borders look much more intricate and flashy than anything they've done before. Technically the project borders were free, but It felt like it was done to get you to buy them before the sale. So, you kinda had the choice to spend an extra 375 RP for the borders, or not. That's 200 more RP than what you would spend on these.

i mean its a throw away. the borders really aren't that big of a deal. if you really care that much you will pay and they know that.

skins are their primary source of money, and they are going to milk them for every dollar they can. and they honestly should as a business. its just good business.

if you don't want the border or icon then don't pay the extra 3.50 ish in RP.

think about it like buying a special edition of a game.

a company releases a special edition of a game like Uncharted 4. they could have thrown in the small extras for free for those who buy the game on release. they could. or they could be smart and charge you and extra amount of money. only the die hards want it anyway so they usually will pay whatever for it. the ones who aren't willing to pay the money honestly don't really care about the special edition anyway. unless that edition is priced obscenely and unfairly.

the borders are fairly priced since you get an icon with it and most of the icons are pretty cute. the border isn't anything special to be honest. if you want it, get it. if you don't value it at a few bucks then don't do it.

is it just me but do people seem a little overly stingy about 175 RP.... I mean cmon. Do any of you guys have jobs even minimum wage can make 175 rp rather fast. Half of you probably spent longer complaining about this then it would've taken to make that money and even if it was a bit much is it something to have a heart attack over.

Then people complain about the mission and game mode being bad. I haven't participated in either but cmon how many skins have had missions attached to them or game modes released along side them? Also this might even explain why the skin costs 175 extra rp.

wait, you got the old project skin borders when you bought them in the first week ? I thought you would only get the borders if you bought ALL OF THEM in the first week .... I fired up 80 bucks for that bundle back then ( didn't have all the champs yet ) ... Wow, Im actually retarded

You have to buy $70 worth of RP just for the skin bundle, so Riot isn't exactly hiding their greed. "We made 5 skins. We value them more than a AAA full game release."

if the price hike is related to the future runes rework then if Riot would just say so i would be understanding. but blindsiding us like this just turns me off. That and the way that missions seems to constantly differ in degree of difficulty and reward.
