"Assist Recognition" is too strict.

What do you have to do to be earned an assist? Well- if you're a Support main like me- you've probably noticed yourself being robbed of well-earned assists. Sometimes you die dealing massive damage before an ally comes in to clean up. Sometimes you move slightly away from the fight to keep the pressure on. But, despite your actual involvement in the fight (your engages and peels, and the actual damage you deal) you don't get the assist.

Now- some people might say- so what your team got the kill. Well, true- but when my rating is based off kill participation, and kill participation is a ratio of Team Kills : Kills+Assists, then being robbed of assists makes it look like I'm not doing the things I'm supposed to be doing- and things I am actually doing.

I take pride in my Assists. I treat them as my own Kills. They're worth more to me than kills. They show that I was a team player when that point was earned. Where as a kill could just mean I wanted to do my own thing. Getting that assist is awesome. When an ally gets "Triple Kill" "Quadra Kill"... I'm hunting that last enemy to secure OUR Penta. Because it's my Penta too if I can make it happen.

Next time you're in a 5v5 push- take a look at who's being rewarded assists. You'll be surprised at how little you get the assist despite being directly in the fray.

So I think whatever restrictions are put in place should be revised. Whatever conditions are preventing us from getting those assists really should be addressed. I mean- KDA directly reflects our performance. But assists don't seem to be rewarded accurately.

If I hit you, and you kill me, and 3 seconds later my ally kills you because of me- I don't get the assist. But- if you hit me, and I kill you, and 20 seconds later I die under turret- you get a kill. How does that work?

Please Riot, can something be done about this? It's really upsetting.

If you have a story about being robbed of assists- share it in the comments below. Maybe we can shed some light on this problem.

Supports have some of the easiest time getting assists. If you actively buff/heal/shield someone, you get a benefit off everything they do for the next like 10 seconds. If you slow them with Frost Queen, you get an assist. If you're a damage support you get all that aoe damage assists benefit, and if you're an all in tank you're sitting in the middle of the enemy team picking up assists.

The only time assists are hard is when you're either late to the fight, or the fight starts from the enemy team soloing you out and nuking you.(Which can lead to your team capitalizing on a lack of enemy cd's and/or bad positioning, but you get screwed out of assists)

This is the basic timeframe and actions that grant assists in addition to damaging the enemy. OP, you finding it happen frequently with particular spells/champions?

The thing that bugs me is red-smite doesn't grant assists if you don't attack them, even tho its a debuff.

I smite you for vision so my ezreal/taric/etc can still kill you when you go into that brush? No assist if I didn't get in range to also damage you.

I'm a tank and I smite you in the teamfight so you'll do less damage to me? No assist unless I get into range to hit you as well.

Almost makes me not want to use it even though I know it will help my team get some kills.

I think there are two bigger flaws om getting assists right now.

  • dealing damage to shields does not count to assists, only direct damage to hp.
  • soaking up damage grants no assists, makeing tanking and initiating often a thankless job unless you get thornmail. Letting debuffs like the AS slow from randuins count for assists would already help a bit here.

Hey, if you're to take anything out of this please, the best thing would be to consider this, if you take damage from a champion but don't attack them, you should still receive a assist, considering tanking things is a legitimate thing...

I think that you should receive an assist as long as you are in combat and within a certain range of an enemy's death. (as an addition to other factors that contribute to assists) If I initiate the enemy team, and one of them evades me to go for my ally, my team kills them- I should get an assist. That enemy would be much harder to kill if I wasn't holding off all their allies.

And I see this all the time in ARAM. I'll keep a majority of the team preoccupied with beating me up, which allows my team to focus out the weak ones or pick off the ones who didn't get engaged.

Let's say I'm using Galio and my taunt grabs 4/5 enemies. Then let's say my team utilizes the opportunity to attack the one enemy not affected. I literally did nothing to that enemy, but still provided the necessary means to eliminate that enemy. I will still get no assist.

Don't think I've ever noticed that happening.

More often than not I'll find out I have a ton of assists despite doing much of anything. Derp out, make bad plays, still got 4 assists because the allied mage tagged all 4 of the enemies that went down I accidentally miss-clicked and gave them an AA boost rather than the marksman with said boost.

Or I shield the tank and they manage to hit enemies that die within 10 seconds with Sunfire.

Or I was just spamming MS boost with Sona for no good reason and things died while I went to a bush with my pink ward.

Or I panic-ulted with Soraka and top-lane managed to get a kill.

Or I throw down the lantern to save my carry, carry totally doesn't take it, but since my carry put down some damage and the jungler sneaks in and finishes off the kill: that lantern shield gave me an assist.

I've got 99 problems as a support, but getting assists certainly isn't one of them.

Step one: Build item 3190 Step two: Use item 3190 in team fights and rake in the assists Step three: $$$Profit$$$

Step one: Taric Being anywhere near a team fight should earn him an assist. When an ally barely survives a fight because the bonus Armor you provide: that's support. And I main Taric. Even the buff from his Ultimate doesn't grant you an assist sometimes. And that empowers ally's abilities.

Sometimes- you can't be dry-humping your enemy the entire team fight. As a CC tank support- I get ahead of them to block off their escape. And sometimes I have to push slightly farhter ahead to zone approaching enemies that might turn the tide. And even if it was me who stunned Leona, if I walk up to zone Lucian- I don't get the assist when Ez kills Leona.

Distance becomes a factor- when it shouldn't. A person who's been dead for 20 seconds can secure a kill if the enemy has been "executed" after their fight. But if the support takes a few steps too far, nothing else matters- no assist... even if you did absolutely all the damage and decided to let a non-support pick up the kill while you dropped a ward.

It's inaccurate.

distance has no affect on the assits you gain. This is why a janna can shield a tf right before he ults away and still get assists. Not even dieing stops you from getting assits.

The reason taric doesn't get assists from his aura w is because you aren't doing anything with that aura that is really interactive. It would be really boring to play a champion that literally did nothing but just earned gold because they stood there....

But honestly, why would you bring up supporting and assist gathering in general based on one, very underpopulated, and currently under rework champion?

Also, tank supports in general have a harder time gathering assists, this is why you get locket....

The scenario I made was random, and Taric was just an example. I experience the same problem with many Champions. I deal damage to the enemy, the enemy dies, I don't receive the assist.

Then your sense of time is very very far off

No, in that situation you most assuredly get the assist. If you don't, the spell or attack you used to hit the enemy is bugged, and you really should submit a report.

Hate to see the downvotes, this is definitely a problem, for example, I've been a tank like Alistar, tanked the tower so my allies could swoop in for the kill, however, no assist is rewarded because i personally didn't attack them...

Assists work consistent to kills. A lot of info in your post in wrong, although your overall idea may be fine.

You have 10 seconds after dealing damage or CC for the person to die to get an assist (or a kill instead of an execute).

So if you're dealing damage, etc... it all counts.

The few issues I see are:

  1. Assist vicinity: Someone is going to get away from an ally, you cut off their escape, so they try to double back or something and your ally kills them. You obviously helped, but since you did no damage/cc you get no credit.
  2. Vision: Providing vision does not grant an assist. Doesn't matter if I'm caitlyn ult'ing a Vayne right before she R-Q's to make her visible through stealth, if I haven't damaged her and my ally blows her up before my shot hits her, I get no credit.
  3. Indirect damage: I shoot dragon/baron to make it attack them. If I didn't do it directly, I get no credit.

Otherwise sure, the limit sucks, but we have to deal with it.
