How exactly does the role of mid win games?

I think I have a more clear understanding of how every other role contributes to overall victory. But I lack clarity on how mid translates their role into a won game.

I can understand if you win your lane strong enough you can roam bottom to gank or help with dragon. However, this doesn't always happen. How does your lane role contribute to victory if you are going even or only slightly winning mid lane against your opponent?

And how does that differ from the role of top lane?

Some mid laners have a shit ton of area of control ( Something a lot of other lanes dont have ) Veigar Taliyah Anivia

Some mid laners are long range hard hitters ( Something a lot of other lanes dont have ) Xerath Azir Velkoz

you dont have to win lane at all to roam. you can do it whenever you like. besides roaming, mid is the shortest road from your base the the enemies. so losing mid tower is actually worst then losing a top or bot tower. mids a generally ranged, and have burst damage along with some CC. all good attributes to have on a champion and on a team.

some mids are assassins, others team fight champs, some have longer range and are pokey some will burst you down from 100-0 real quick.

mids are their to carry the game similarly to an ADC. only most ADC hit their spike towards the end of the game. from early-mid game mid is the stronger carry.

You are usually the AP Carry or Assassin on Mid, your job is to focus squishy targets (mainly the adc) after the lane phase.

Usually mid laners are either nuke champions or zoning champions. Anivia, for example, can contribute to a win by walling off the enemy team from Baron. Brand, on the other hand, contributes by dealing heavy damage. Just depends on your champion and your ability to play that champion in their intended role.

I guess I'm thinking in terms of jungler, top, and support where your roles are more tangible and objective oriented. Jungle - Find ganks opportunities, help gain momentum in lanes, get objectives. Support - Protect and enable your ADC. Top - This can be associated with split pushing, although not always. You might also have a role of messing with the enemy jungler.

ADC is a role that I associate with simply farming until you come online to be used in teamfights.

Mid, I guess I never thought they were more like the adc in the sense of farming up so they can assassinate stuff mid game or contribute to teamfights. Maybe that's why I'm left wondering what role they fill in the lane phase. I'm seeking to gain clarity on what my objectives should be in the lane phase mid. Should my only real goal be to farm and not die, until mid game comes along?

I think I always assumed the midlaner should try very hard to gain a tangible advantage that allows him to roam and help bottom or top (either by forcing the enemy mid back or waveclearing up to their tower to buy time for roaming). I assume it's the same mentality a jungler has that they should try very hard to find opportunities to gank in the early game as their role function. Maybe I think that way because I started in Dota, and in Dota that tends to be the role of a midlaner (Find opportunities to roam and gank other lanes, gaining momentum for your team). Is that wrong to think that way as a mid in LoL? Are there some mid champions where I actually should think and play that way?

Good mids I play with periodically show up botlane for ganks, sometimes with, sometimes without the jungler. Easier for people like Ziggs or Xerath who have really fucking long-range ults.

I already understand the attributes that go into a mid lane champion and how they contribute to teamfights.

My question is; What is the role of a mid laner during the lane phase.

Is their only expectation as a mid laner to farm up and then participate in the midgame ganks and teamfights?

Or, is there more to their role positionally that contributes to victory? More comparable to how a jungler's role contributes to victory, not how the champions themselves tend to perform in teamfights.

You don't have to win your lane in order to gank side lanes. How you do in lane really shouldn't affect your ganking really. It comes down to which champion you have and how effective your ganks will be with your level and items. While it's helpful to push the wave to enemy tower before leaving for a gank, it's not necessary, but more risk. The thing if your roams don't end with a kill, you wasted a lot of time and potential. Which is why it's important to ping when the enemy mid leaves lane cause you want him to waste his time if he ever roams. While a lot of it is highly dependent on whether or not the gankees are smart enough to react properly, you want to give them as much an advantage/disadvantage as possible. And don't forget, if you ward smartly, you can also gank the enemy jungler, which is actually a shorter trip than ganking a side lane. But if you're not good at roaming and ganking, you can always play a huge teamfight champion. I personally love Galio because he can very effectively determine who wins a battle depending on how well he ults if his team is smart.

This is all helpful, thanks.

So, if I were to transition to mid game as a mid, understanding that I am the primary damage carry, what is the best way to actually go about that? Should I be looking to team up with my tanky jungler or top laner for ganks and objectives? Because I've noticed that most of the mids I prefer to play don't do well in 1vs1 encounters, so roaming alone is risky.

i feel that roaming is pretty important mid game, and should also be done sorta in the early game too. objectives are vital, just make sure you've warded well and their mid lane is dead if you want to push tower as an immobile champion

if you feel roaming is risky for you, perhaps you should travel to other lanes from your jg. there's the off chance that you'll still get attacked, but it's better than roaming river

just my two potatoes

Easiest to roam from (center lane) and the shortest, most direct lane and easiest to push for the win.
