A quick PSA for those freaking out over the new Rune system because they dumped a ton of IP on them

(myself included, I have 16 rune pages, 6 of which are Mordekaiser specific ones)

Riot is going to compensate us for all the Ip we used on the runes, but that's beside the point.

I see people flipping their collective Sh*t over "riot removing stuff I BOUGHT", saying that it was all for nothing.

Newsflash; We got the privilege to USE THEM, we had an inherent advantage over new players and people with too little IP/RP income to invest into more than two rune pages. We got to have an advantage, we're not entitled to huge compensations as we already got what we paid for.

So, before I see yet another rant about Riot "TAKING AWAY" stuff we paid for, let me remind you that we got what we paid for. Things change, and it's a step in the right direction, and I'm glad riot is doing this as it's helping the new player experience!

People laugh, but Darius and Anivia is extremely obnoxious in the botlane. Anivia's wall can give Darius the space he needs to hook someone and the q can keep them there. And the area melt of Anivia's R just softens them up.

Mordekaiser and Nami are also obnoxious. The speed boost and the ranges of their abilities just line up too damn perfect.

Anivia and Wukong is also fairly op (read Fun, as in the dwarf fortress kind). If Anivia stuns them just inside tower range Wukong can hop in and assassinate without drawing aggro. And if he does draw aggro he's Wukong.

Garen works against the right matchup. Garen and Lulu or Garen and Chogath stacking silences is fun.

Be creative! Have you ever seen a game with two fed juggernauts on one team?

I'm actually a little concerned about them being removed now that I think about it. Not being able to take defensive runes such as HP/level, Armor, and MR runes is going to be very... lethal. I'm going to miss my MS quints too. Of course, I don't know what options will be available to us, but I feel like there's gonna be a lot more deaths in lane.

Yeah, being able to opt into a +20 armor or MR page or things like a pair of HP/5 quints on Soraka especially since that got even more important with the hp sustain removal from coin. Or HP/Level scaling on Sona one of the squishiest champions in the game so you don't instantly pop within the first two seconds of a team fight.

I'm seeing an immense amount of defenses probably getting removed here. Which means lane bullies like Draven and MF are probably going to be meta for a while after this hits.

My 30 flat Armor page for Taric will be missed.

And I'll dearly miss my MS quints. 330 base MS is so painful, quints bump it up to 345 which is amazing.

And yea, I can't fathom laning against Zed or Talon without Armor runes :/.

Sorry, 5% was included in the runes, forgot that came from masteries. Only tier 3 runes have flat CDR in the form of seals, glyphs, whatevertheotheronewas, and quints.

Luckily the CDR runes aren't horrible as far as tier 3 rune prices go.

There is no privilege as you need runes to play in a competitive environment.
It's a barrier imposed to you to break it through grinding.

Until you present me someone that say: "I could have bought runes but i decided not too because was not my style.", than it's a requirement without any option to avoid it besides losing to someone that have it and you dont.

I hate this kind of speech that talk about runes like they are a summoner icon or something like that.

I agree with this. Runes didnt give you an advantage since everyone had them. It's been years since I played against someone without runes so I wasn't at an advantage against anyone. "But new players have to buy them" No shit, so did I. I'm glad they are getting rid of them and make a free alternative. But I still think compensating players is the way to go

I'm fine with them being gone I just wanna know if RP spent is going to be treated differently than IP spent. Also I am worried as to what that compensation is after getting multiple skin shards for champions I already had skinshards for while also owning every champion I seriously don't want more hexcrafting in my life.

I heavily suspect that it will be a function of the IP value of what you have spent on Runes/Rune pages granted as an "equal" value of chest and keys.

And you know that if you combine 3 shards of any type you get a guarenteed item of that type you don't own, right? You can easily abuse this with champ shards to get new champs on release without spending a single point of IP or RP.

As a really long time player I REALLY hope they don't just give IP back, I've got literally all 20 rune pages and every single rune in the game, along with all champions, and have 50k IP extra just sitting.

While we aren't legally entitled to any recompense for our spent currency I think it would be exceptionally foolish for Riot not to refund RP and offer some sort of bennie for IP spent on the system. Players who put money into the game to get runes to be able to play on a level field or to buy champions because they spent their IP on runes are the people who pay the salaries and server costs that let this game succeed, particularly back when playerbase was small and quality-to-cost ratio for aesthetic items was poor so they had to sell access to power in addition to skins.

Creating a precedent where your investment of time or money might be taken away without compensation is bad for convincing players to continue giving you their time and money or distorts player behavior to 'safe' purchases. Runes and rune pages were presented as permanent purchases not rentals regardless of what the EULA says and while overhauling the system is a good thing, treating customers with respect has always been a core Riot value and I expect they will continue to live up to that.

Com on man, its just runes and mysteries lol. Stop acting like they are removing a champion from the game you spent RP on. And who cares if you spent money on something in the past that will now be free to everyone. I have too and this affects me none.

Its just how life is....when a new PS or Xbox comes out its at a higher cost...then later on they reduce the price......that new game you like? A few months later will come free with the system itself.....are you going to march into the store and demand compensation just because you bought it separately in the past?

Even with the skins.......They redo the splash art on champion skins. I absolutely hate the current Frozen Shen skin. It looks nothing like the one I bought. But when they changed it, it never crossed my mind that i would need some type of compensation.

Riot's idea of recompensating players might be stupider than you think. They have a well known history of screwing over player investments with changes (especially with real money spent on skins that they refuse to reimburse on visual upgrade champion reworks). Since runes themselves are only available with IP, they won't hurt that much, but having spent RP on rune pages will almost definitely be a huge smack in the face to players once this is said and done.

And then there's the actual changes. By combining runes and masteries, they're obviously going to have a bigger impact than current keystones do and Riot came out with OP keystones that they took forever to balance upon introduction. I'm willing to bet $100 Riot can't possibly balance the upcoming keystones upon release, and they'll have an even bigger impact than current ones.

I don't get it though. On your way to 30, you'd have incomplete rune pages. Your enemies/allies will also have incomplete rune pages. It's there, available for all to use, although the costs are definitely questionable. Everyone has the option of choosing how to spend their IP.

There is no advantage. If you say that new players don't understand the concept of runes (and so, maybe invested no IP in runes at all), then how do you? Unless, of course, you happen to be a smurf which is a problem with smurfing in general rather than runes themselves. This will happen with/without runes, as the smurf basically knows how to play the game, the newbies don't.
