Should Blue Essence Be Needed for Champion Masteries?

For the Level 6 and 7 masteries, I understand the need for the multiple S ranks in the games, but why do we need the blue essence. That turns it from showing your skill to just grinding keys/chests to find champ shards or wasting IP to get them. Is there a legitimate reason why blue essence is necessary or shows how good we are with that specific champion?

blue essence isnt even needed for hextech crafting. you could replace it with ip, and there would be 0 difference.

It's to make blue essence feel useful for people who own all the champs till they can figure out a better way of using it.

Here to stay unfortunately... Least we can buy it for IP
