Unpopular Opinion: Chinese companies are killing "western" games

PICKLE RICK REEE··120 votes·17,675 views

Asian culture:

  • Higher stress culture (highest suicide rates in the world)
  • 16-20 hours of school a day every day
  • Maybe 1-2 hours a day of free time
  • Gaming bars where you pay to rent per hour

Western Culture:

  • More overall casual culture
  • work/school 8-12 hours a day
  • Play daily/semi daily at home for fun for a couple hours (at no cost)
  • Binge play for hours on weekend

Game originally developed by small inde company rito from California Tencent (chinese investment company) buys 90+% of share in small inde rito around season 5 (previously 30-40%) Game starts being catered towards Asian culture Westerners get upsetti spaghetti over changes and that they make no sense (such as blue essence/xp changes that cater to 1-2 games a day and hurt people who binge play)

Riot will never go back to their Western Culture style of development. Asia buys literally all the inde companies that show any promise, and then cater to their culture to a point where all westerners stop playing. Best example being that the Chinese literally killed H1Z1, which IMO was the best Battle Royale in existence.

I mean, if you think about it, Rito was CALIFORNIA based. California is the most western part of the western world. By that, I mean that they are the social progressives of the world. Politically agreeing or not, social progressivists have the highest ethics on the spectrum. Power to the people. "Free" incentives with no expectation of return, which led people to want to pay money, simply because they get so much free stuff and wanted to show how much they appreciated them; similar to a symbiotic relationship. Never giving a vague excuse why they can't do something. Transparency.

Now getting a free recolor skin for liking them on Facebook is giving away "too much free stuff".

PS. Nothing is free. When ANYBODY gives you something for "free", there is a cost. Whether it be an expectation of a returned investment, or for an immediate monetary amount. If you can convince people to stay for the free things, they are more likely to spend more money. It's not free. It's an investment, so stop saying they give "free" stuff because they are oh so kind and generous. "Free" stuff is no longer considered free with their new business ethics.

Wanted to give some insight to the bureaucratical stances of Riot and why they've done seemingly irrational changes. Everybody seems willing to give up their pride and work for money.

As a Chinese player who's now studying in the US, I have to say your opinion is probably misinformed.

First of all the cultural differences you mentioned are a little too extreme. 16-20 hours of school? That's just not physically possible. School itself is probably 8-10 hours depending on what grade you are in. If you count doing homework, I'd say 10-14 hours.

Also most families have computers at home. People that go to gaming bars usually go there because they want to play with friends face-to-face. The type of people who goes to gaming bar alone tends to binge play. They can stay at bars all night just to play League. In addition many college students have lots of free time, so they also tend to binge play. So the "only play for 1-2 hours a day" thing you mentioned isn't necessarily true.

As far as I know, though Tencent holds most of Riot, it does not participate in deciding how the game is going to change or become. Although there is not direct proof of this that I can find, but a few years ago there was this Chinese themed champion concept Ao Shin that got abandoned, and Chinese players were really upset about it. If Tencent does have a big say in decision making, I'm sure it's going to pressure Riot to finish that champ no matter what.

TL;DR: Your opinion on Asian culture is misinformed and I don't think you can blame Tencent for recent changes of League.

Despite what the title of the OP says, it's actually a pretty popular opinion to bash "the chinese" for ruining LoL. It's always "I know I'm gonna nuked with dislikes, because they're ignorant" as if they're some kind of higher-consciousness woke visionary who is persecuted for speaking up against the system. But no. They aren't, they're showered with upvotes because they're just leeching off the lowest common denominator.

Seriously it's easy to just alienate some people from across the world and just blame everything on them. It's their fault everything is bad. It's their culture which is the problem. Let's throw out some false bullshit about them because that's aligns with my beliefs, instead of actually learning about them. Shit man.

I've been called derogatory and dehumanizing shit in champion select solely because of my name. Most of that nonsense which is said is from dumb ass misconceptions or just plain spite.

First of all the cultural differences you mentioned are a little too extreme. 16-20 hours of school?

I'm just going to drop some additional thoughts of my own on this

Doing something for 16 hours a day is the absolute maximum possible assuming 0 hours worth of time in transit without prolonged ill effects from sleep deprivation, especially when talking about teens who need a minimum of 8 hours of sleep a night. 20 hours leaves literally 4 hours of sleep assuming the kids can teleport to school and literally never do anything else, in which case catering the game towards them would be questionable anyway.

Assuming the minimum 16 hours he posted for school, 8 hours of sleep, an hour in transit, an hour for everything else a kid would have to do like eating/talking to family/showering and 2 hours of gaming you end up at a total of 28 hours, more than is possible in a day by 4 hours. His high end estimate is just beyond absurd.

This whole statement is ridiculous hyperbole and it seems like he didn't even think out the implications that 20 hours worth of school would have. Someone under that workload wouldn't last a week before the fatigue got to them.

Yeah, 2 majority Asian countries made it into the top 20 countries in world's suicide rate (even if you have to count India, that still only makes it 3). Must be that Asian countries have the highest suicide rates in the world.

Genius.

LankPants1 votes

Being very pedantic, it's actually 5 countries. Russia, Korea, Kazakhstan, Japan and India are all at least partially in Asia. Whether or not Russia is Asian is disputable, a majority of the population live in Europe, a majority of the area is in Asia, so it's somewhere between. The other 4 however are indisputably in Asia.

It is however worth noting that well over 30% of the worlds countries are in Asia, so 5/20 is actually less than you'd expect by chance.

OP was using the term "Asian" in the context of culture, where it's primly used as a generic term referring to the cultures in the "Sino-sphere" centering around China and its neighbour nations which it has greatly influenced over the years, and not going in terms of geographical location. This usage is also indeed what OP used throughout this thread, until they just decide it's not case anymore I guess.

"Asian culture" is only typically used to refer to Eastern Asia and maybe South East Asia specifically. It should be VERY common knowledge by now that Asia is the largest continent on Earth, and also the most populous, extending all the way from Japan into the west into covering Georgia and Saudi Arabia, neither of which is what we generally refer to as "Asian countries" or "Asian culture"; and thus attempts to lump all nations in the Asia continent into a single bracket of "Asian" would be way too overly simplifying indeed.

The actually "culturally Asian" countries, only make it in with 2 entries out of the countries sourced, Korea and Japan, 3 if you have to consider India (which makes sense, given its Buddhist influence over China, Japan, Thailand etc for an example). On the other hand, Russia is a Slavic country with their own independent culture, and same applies to Kazakhstan, being an ethnic Turkic and Muslim-majority country. It's not that their culture have 0 influence over the cultural group we commonly refer to as "Asian", but it should be obvious that their cultural impact on the latter has been minimal or at least not nearly as ingrained and therefore not to be considered a part of it in this context.

In the plain context OP provides, we see 3 max make it into the top 20 countries with the highest suicide rate. It's clear OP did not do their research at all whatsoever. But then again, it's this OP we're talking about here.

While I agree with you that the OP is exaggerating, I completely blame Tencent on League's current state.

When a company is purchased and becomes a child company, the parent company oversees the child and basically controls it.

Riot games still probably has control over smaller balance changes, like nerfs and buffs, but Tencent controls the direction they want League to go to. Therefore, I completely blame Tencent on this "make games shorter" bullshit.

Tencent is def part of the problem when it comes to the recent changes to league. You can see a clear delineation of practices when tencent took over. Not a cultural difference though, def a big businesses money kind of change.

SEKAI50 votes

Fuck off with your spread of misinformation and your very poor attempt at deduction.

Tencent bought 93% of Riot's share in Feb 2011, ie Season ONE. What happened in Season 5 was that Tencent bought out the last 7%, which doesn't make any difference operation wise, and only on legal papers it makes a difference.

Given you are just rationalising your way around, pushing out an essay full of speculation from this 1 fact where you got it wrong. This post is just a shiny turd, and ofc, still a turd.

it honestly depends where in CA,

i live the the bay area. (aka silicon valley) it is about 2500-3000 per month for a 1 bedroom apartment.

when i was in michigan i payed 750 per month for a 2 story 3 bedroom 1.5 bath HOUSE with a basement the side of the whole house (or rather half duplex)

its expensive as fuck here, and more to the point.. when i got and walk my doggos, over HALF the people i meet dont speak english as thier primary language.

the vast majority being chinese, athough we also have a TON of other cultures.

indian, isreali, pakistani, japanese,

if you go further outside my city with a bit lower living costs (say 1500 per month for a studio) u see higher populations of latino's and a african americans

to put things in perspective, i had been friends with someone form work about a week and a half before i even noticed he was African American

calforina DOES have the highest ethics, we dont CARE where you are from, what u look like, your gender identity. the only we care about is how you ACT.

These flyover states that lack the culture and refinement of the liberal coasts and some of the most honest and friendly people I've known, an alien thing here in southern california, outside of OC/Irvine areas, where you still don't know your neighbors or trust anyone, but the crime rates are low.

While I think you're probably right in some of this and that the company switch to Tencent HAS caused some serious negative problems for the game... I find the idea absurd that any company looking to sell a product would intentionally alienate an audience. If they're pushing the game to cater to players in Asia more than NA or the like, I doubt it's based on any reason other than money. TenCent is sleazy as fuck, but it's not because they're Asian... it's because they're a huge corporation that only cares about cash. The culture issue isn't an issue. If they were making more money out of NA, they'd bend over backwards to appeal to NA.

So yeah... you're right that the game has gone downhill. You're right that TenCent has a lot to do with it. It's not because they're Asian and thus somehow alien in mindset and culture. ANY sleazy corporation that got a hold of League would have ruined it, likely in similar ways. Can you imagine League if it had been bought by EA? Yeah... just as horrible in different ways.

The only thing Riot being owned by an Asian company likely influences is that they probably skew the game's aesthetic towards Asian cultures and styles... hense the sheer number of rather edgy weeaboo-seeming champions we keep getting. Even then, it's hard to say since Anime is a HUGE deal almost everywhere and it might simply be catering to people who enjoy that.

PICKLE RICK REEE1 votes

Not trying to alienate them, but their culture is not compatible with ours. Nearly polar opposites. Compromise is always possible, but when it comes to a game, people don't want to compromise, they want to have fun, else they'll go play another game that suits to them more.

The Whamboozler3 votes

Ok, you clearly missed what I was saying.

I think the issues plaguing league that have come from TenCent are because it is a large, sleazy, money-grubbing corporation... not because it's freakin' Asian. I mean, Asia is a CONTINENT, not a country. There are a shit load of countries in Asia with a shit load of different cultures. RUSSIA is part of Asia. TenCent is Chinese specificially... and that is not really a factor in the ways they've made the game worse.

I have no idea why you're making it about culture unless you're just trying to rile up the PC sorts that complain every time something like this is brought up. TenCent isn't fucking up the game because it's making the game "too Chinese". That's freakin' dumb. TenCent is a fucking business, and it wants to make as much money as possible. It is fucking up the game because it's doing money-grubbing business shit and doesn't really give a shit about the game beyond how much income they get from it. Because that is what corporations DO.

In summary, since I guess my original point got lost in the text somehow... It is not about Chinese culture ruining your game. That's dumb and sounds.... REALLY bigoted. Culture is irrelevant here. ANY large corporation likely would have ruined league by doing what large, greedy corporations DO. Making decisions that affect the game that are only motivated by profit.

So stop with the "game is bad because china" crap.

Tbh I've been around the gaming community to realize a few things:

  1. Gaming companies don't generally implement changes which "ruin" their games. They generally implement new content which enhances/and or changes the old.

  2. What DOES ruin games is the fact that games are multi agent-factor stages. Publishers, Developers, Marketers, AND players all play roles in ruining games.

Why do I include players in there?

Because they are in fact the largest factor in game ruination.

Every player has an incentive to abuse whatever features or loopholes in any game which give them better satisfaction than playing the game faithfully. And, these players are generally apt to adapt well to new content, and learn to abuse it.

This doesn't only exist in League, it's become a culture.

There is no strong incentive for good players to play their high elo account any more than necessary.

There are MANY reasons for them to make secondary accounts, and smurf lower elos:

They gain financial donations for their play in low elo on Twitch.tv, and on Youtube. FundMe and other various donor platforms have become League's RMT market.

They don't put undue duress or stress on their primary accounts, and always come back to them cool and concentrated.

They get a major hit of dopamine out of trashing lower elo players.

They stay practiced and generally are able to experiment at lower elos with less risk.

They gain sponsorship (Streamers are often more apt to gain team sponsorship)

They gain celebrity (a perk in itself)

And...... there's not much Riot/Tencent can do about this. What are you going to do? IP track and use exorbitant resources to track every smurf? Ban them and lose your competitive lineup?

And then you need to look at the lower elo player's reactions to them:

-They rage at the feeders. -They have a lower tolerance for smurfs and often surrender. -Some begin feeding themselves. -They don't have the basic skills to exist on the same game as them. -They have been permastuck for up to 8 years. -They are tired of not being able to climb, even if technically good, because they have bad teams.

I'm not going to lie. The True damage meta is one that is annoying as hell. But I'm used to Riot changing the game in OP ways (Feral Flame, Zephyr). The reason they do it is obvious. They want to force you to relearn the game, because mastery of the same game model results in stagnation and boredom. They want to separate those who can adapt from those who cannot.

And it's worked over time. It's just...... who wants to be SIlver/Bronze for 8 YEARS? That is their primary problem They've done nothing real to help break up this SIlver tier bottleneck.

The Whamboozler1 votes

Ok, right off the bat I wanna tell you thank you. You have easily expressed yourself in the most understandable and easy to read way I have ever seen on these boards. In a way I myself would like to do were I not kinda lazy. Point is props on getting your point across REALLY well. I even agree with most of it!

What I will give a little bit of question to is the idea that the root cause of the "ruination of the game" was... streamers? I almost feel like I must have misread your post somehow, because the rest of it is pretty intelligent and insightful and the idea that streamers have ruined the game strikes me as REALLY inane.

Now I won't pretend that I know the numbers and I'm far too lazy to look them up, but aren't the bulk of the people playing the game in Bronze and Silver? It's something like 70% of the playerbase, right? Now while smurfing IS a very common thing, the math there just doesn't add up. How can such a small portion of the playerbase have that much impact? I think BLAMING smurfs for bad games is far more likely than actually seeing a smurf.

Don't get me wrong, smurfing is lousy and definitely a thing that makes the game more shitty overall... but I think it's a relative drop in the pond compared to larger issues the game has... the largest of which being the simple fact that it's a team oriented game with snowballing mechanics and a fairly lax system for curbing player toxicity. Every friend I've tried to get into the game who gave up a few weeks in... and almost all of the ones who'd played for years but kinda fell out of the game mentioned doing it because they got sick of dealing with toxic teammates. League is in dire need of a good community cleaning, but it's not likely to happen now that their numbers are falling. I doubt they want to start being hardasses onto the toxic-ass community. That would just provoke even more players to leave.

Illabethe2 votes

Streamers aren't a small portion of the community. There is about 1 smurf per 20 players, which is significant.

But I'm more pointed on what they do to overall player morale. It doesn't last 1 game. It lasts several, played in sequence, and the general attitudes of people who would otherwise be pretty amicable to one another.

Once you've lost a game to a smurf, you bring that reaction into the next game. Then some teammate of yours goes 0/2, and you begin to behave like you did when the smurf put someone 0/6. You begin to see deja vu.

It affects your play efficiency.

P.S. I know 1 in 20 seems like an unrealistic number. But a lot of Silver right now are Ex bannee's too. It's not just streamers. It's distressed high - Gold elos who got stuck in the mud of Silver after leveling new accounts. They present their own bag of problems to that elo. Good players, but often not good enough to 1v5 a game EVERY GAME. But when they DO snowball, they start to look an awful lot like streamers in how hard they snowball.

That's kind of where I am. If I can get the momentum going, I can 1v5. But I don't often play "Reset" champs, so it's less likely for me to go off the hook (I have some 22/0/7 Jung Pykes recently though)

Jefftiffy7 votes

I mean I don't really think you understand that the problem is that the creators of this game aren't the same people making the decisions now. Creators often feel more tied to the game as it is their brain child. People who come in afterwards often have a more capitalistic view on the product.

IMO capitalism is a really necessary double edged sword, it gives the consumers power. But unfortunately both sides cause problems. In video games the consumer doesn't have a choice, you can't really experience something with a small investment putting more power on the developer. In retail the consumer has more power simply because it is more profitable for the company to let consumers inflate the price of goods thinking they are always right than to stand their ground because "customer service". When both sides have power its a really bad thing, but lately its been so one sided in America its almost getting ridiculous to the point where foreign companies are setting the example for American companies (like Riot) in the video game industry.

IK its kind of a broad concept here, but that's basically what is happening to games like League and Fortnite. Riot basically sold themselves out letting a company run them into the ground. Epic chose to adopt a similar policy with Fortnite. They constantly break the game just for profit, and its one of the biggest turn offs for me.

IDK about you, but a lot of big companies I used to love are disappointing me lately. Epic, Riot, 343, Infinity Ward/Sledge Hammer, and Bungie are the biggest ones to disappoint me lately and to a lesser extent Blizzard. The only one I can sit there and praise is Ubisoft because they actually try to fix their games in the long run no matter how hard they drop the ball and it doesn't seem as money hungry as the other companies.

Box purchase to play rather than Free to play.

League was developed after DoTa Allstars.... in other words..... a copy cat.

Tencent was one of Riot's angel investors on its onset in the creation of League of Legends (They just bought it 2 years later)

OP base of this post, that Riot was supposedly bought out in Season 5, actually happened in Season 1. So that's the entire post. Gone.

Also, let's not forget the splash art fiasco that happened years ago.

Yes, unfitting art like this one is still in the game.

It came about back in like 2010. It was a clear upgrade when the game's art used to look like total junk, let's not pretend otherwise. Just because it becomes outdated as everything eventually does, doesn't mean it was never good.

Some of the Chinese art still lives to this day with favourable opinion, such as the Kayle Classic (aka the Tribunal art, and what got people mad when Riot changed Kayle's splash into the current one from it), Mundo Classic (current Mundo art), Zilean Classic (installer art), Blood Moon Akali (people just cried about its change to the rework version a few days ago) etc etc.

Let's not discredit others for the sake of discrediting them.

Anyone can appreciate and participate in any culture.

But to part of that culture you need to be born into it.

Anyone can love Japan, but you'll never be japanese lest you were born into it.
