Why so few people play support or jungle in team builder?

ScurvyNave··9 votes·10,295 views

In my opinion its because these two roles get the most blame on an average basis for losing the game. Since team builder and solo que are often made up of strangers who don't know each others play styles or plans and have limited communication through pings and chat it makes it difficult for team oriented roles like jungle and support to be successful or even have fun in game.

I don't know how many times I've been called out as a bad jungled because I didn't gank here or didn't tower dive for the chance of a kill. Or as a support when you back while your adc goes in with no warning as your leaving. Im sick and tired of it and I bet other people are too and thats why these roles are so unpopular. Why play a role in which you have to rely on strangers for success when you can carry in a solo lane with limited need of others help.

For instance, in my latest game as a jungleSkarner my Blitzcrank , support dies early on in bot lane leaving his Vayne to die as well. So of course I'm less tempted to run into their lane to help against more powerful opponents and my top and mid had more bankable set ups so I saw to that first. Then when I finally ping bottom lane that I am on my way the blitzcrank grabs the sion I go in and start getting my passive off and run for the Ez to ult him. Of course he E's away like every annoying ezreal and I content myself with getting Sion's flash. However the Vayne and Blitz decide to chase Ezreal under tower since he's low and they end up dying to the Ez u;t, tower shots, and a well aimed Sion Q.

So I'm promptly called useless, a scrub and told to uninstall as they lose lane and Im trying to jungle farm whir not abandoning them. The other lanes where fine, I had no qualms with them and vice versa but the Blitz kept on bitching and insulting my play skill till the point were I told him to fuck off and muted him. Then he starts hooking by jungle creeps away from me and out of spite and rage I left the game after telling both teams to report him and me.

Seriously considering just playing mid lane the rest of my life. Really starting to hate working with other people who have bad attitudes.

  1. New jungle is tough, even before the changes the number of junglers was low.
  2. Everyone hates supporting.
  3. Riot's doing nothing to encourage people to play neglected roles.
  4. People insist on playing ranked meta because sheep, making it even tougher because they want the roles no one wants to play but refuse to play them themselves.

I'm convinced that if they changed the name of support to something like "Playmaker" more people would want to do it.

if you want to main jungle just go and make a 5v5 team with some trusted friends. I've been a jungle main since 2011 (not on this account so you kinda have to trust me when I say it). I've seen every type of jungle blamer, I've grown to love it because it means that I take the blame and everyone gets to have a good game because the mid or bot lanes aren't being blamed. Even if it's not my fault I still take the blame because I know that it's either I take the blame or the flamer targets someone else on my team (I say my team because I don't belive a flamer is part of a team, more like a double agent whos job is to cause chaos). Now I generally try to ping who I want to target and if they flame me for not going after X target instead all I have to say is "I pinged my target it's not my fault you didn't listen." I also tend to be very friendly causing less flame (but I do blow up once in a while).

ScurvyNave2 votes

Thanks for the advice but I don't enjoy being a punching bag all game. At least I know Im not the only person who gets ticked off once in a while, while playing jungle

I don't believe a flamer is part of a team

Well that is not going to help the toxic person become less toxic at all. As someone that's overly toxic pretty much every game, I can tell you the very worst thing you can do is start (or continue) treating that player like s/he's worthless to the team. That just makes him/her want to do shit like follow you around and steal your jungle farm.

I don't believe they're part of a team because they aren't acting like they're part of a team they're just there to make us hate them. Hhowever I try to show them compassion every once in a while (e.g actually ganking they're lane.) I really dislike flamers and report them whenever I can but sometimes I just be a bigger jerk to them (if they don't leash me I will stay in their lane and take all their farm as it's easier for me too because I have smite.) But I have to ask and it's okay not to respond, why be so toxic what makes you want to hate all your teamates?

It's a form of catharsis. When the game isn't providing any satisfaction (note that this has nothing to do with how the team is doing), I instinctively try to find it by venting my frustrations. Sometimes that takes the form of insulting my teammates, other times it takes the form of spamming "Just fucking ff already". A lot of the time I'm not toxic in the sense that I insult my teammates for their playing but I taunt them to the enemy team not surrendering, eg "1/4 ff this time, third failed one in a row".

It's just trying to relieve frustration in the only way I know how at the time. I could of course also go AFK, but I'd rather get a chat ban than low priority queue. That's just a prisoner's island.

So you see, when I'm treated like a worthless member of the team, it only makes that satisfaction-less game that much worse. When my teammates are being nice, I at least feel like letting them win. When my teammates fuck me over and I'm already miserable, I WILL go farm your jungle. I'll take your buffs as soon as they spawn. I'll let you 4v5 teamfight. Again. And again. And again. I'll run out into the jungle to farm when they're in our base and you're suddenly begging me to help you. Because I don't want you to win.

I understand this my youngest brother (12) has started playing LoL a couple weeks ago and he has the most rage in a little boy I have ever seen. I am just glad that he has a harder time typing (terrible I know he has dyslexia) but if he could read and write he'd probably be perma-banned. I've been trying to help him understand when he starts to rage, but it's seems useless. Have you ever thought of just playing an offline game to remove your anger on (e.g. street fighter)?

disregardable3 votes

Lol I'm not a generally angry person. I don't even swear outside of my head, and the only person I've ever raised my voice to is my mother. I didn't even intend to start playing this game. I just downloaded it the summer before I started uni from hearsay that it was good and nothing better to do. Now that I've mastered the very basics of this game, I just play for satisfaction. Not every league game is satisfying and not every offline game is satisfying. As long as Riot wants my money, I'll play what I want. shrug

I'd rather get a chat ban than low priority queue.

You're missing the point, and you are free to do so, I just don't want you to later wonder what happened. The way the system is supposed to work is........the chat restrictions are warnings that you are toxic and offer you the time and space to learn to avoid them. Refusing to avoid them CAN lead to escallated punishments, time suspensions. For those that don't improve after time suspension there is the perma ban option.

The whole point of the system is to reduce the toxicity that players experience game wide.

Take this time now to learn to go through the game differently w/o harm. There are more than two options of being toxic or afking, both of which will get you into trouble. Come to the conclusion NOW, that there has got to be a better way and seek it out.

disregardable3 votes

You're right, the third option is having a satisfying game almost every single match. Unfortunately that's not realistic. Many games are bound to suck, often consecutively, from factors that no one has control over. I apologize for having actual emotions that can't be turned off like a switch, but I need to manage them somehow.

Trinityunicorn2 votes

I apologize for having actual emotions that can't be turned off like a switch, but I need to manage them somehow.

No need to apologize for having anger, everyone has it. Its what you are doing with it that is the problem. Anger is energy in motion, its an E-motion. Its natural purpose is to help you in situations by adding energy to help you. You are correct in that you need to use up that energy. The best use of it in today's world is usually not to lash out at someone. The best use of it is to figure out what is blocking you from what you want and either remove the obstacle or get around it.

You want a satisfying game, you can only make your game play satisfying. You can't make others be/play like you want them to, too many skill levels and game play knowledge to control. You can help others have more knowledge or increase their skill. You can add that to their lane if you can get free and roam and make plays. You can practice your skills when the game is going south use it as an opportunity to just out play your lane, practice rotations, manipulate the creep wave, last hit, gank, position....

You want to reduce the way you use your anger in ways that come back to hurt you via reports. You can change your expectations of all games being satisfying......50% or so are gonna be losses, mmr is gonna try to balance that out.

If you're using your anger to bash your team, then you are not really getting what you want because no one is gonna step up or play any better if they're being harassed. If its giving you satisfaction to punish your teammates for bad plays, mistakes, and lack of skill or knowledge, its not helping them in any way, and its likely hurting you in the long run.

There's more than three options. Sit back and think of what you could do to get to where you want to play. If you're stuck with people that lack skill, increase your own.

disregardable2 votes

one is gonna step up or play any better if they're being harassed

Some of the best games I've ever had were the ones where my teammates helped me and complimented me when I did something well despite the fact that I was toxic. It changed my perspective so much that I started doing it myself, and it's why I responded to OP in the first place.

Also, as I mentioned earlier, frustrating games have nothing to do with whether we're winning or losing. That is why I picked the word frustrating and not bad. Your entire post seems to be based around a misconception that winning games is inherently satisfying; let me assure you, it isn't. A game can and often does still suck if we're winning. I work on those things you listed when I'm having a** fun** game. When I'm having a frustrating game, I don't have the care or attention to help anyone else...significantly at least. I'll still ult a teamfight...let alone try to improve my own game.

Certainly wasn't the reason for the dialogue. The reason I entered the convo was because I think you're heading for a perma and just don't realize it. Or maybe you do realize it and just don't care. Either way I wanted to let you know that chat restrictions can escalate and that if you used the time now to try and rectify what's going on that maybe you won't have to cross that bridge.

The only other thing I'd like to say is, if you wanted to change your level of toxicity you could. Good luck.

because support never gets any credit for plays, and jungle gets blamed for everything

oh and the new jungle is really bad

Raptamei3 votes

The worst thing about both jungling and supporting is that you're at the mercy of your team whenever you try to make plays. If they don't cooperate, you can't make plays. If they do something unexpectedly stupid, you get punished for it.

You initiate a 3v2 after pinging a million times, the other two chicken out for no reason and you die. You don't get a leash, you don't get any help when you get invaded, but as soon as they die they start screaming GANK NOOB. You're trying to remove the ward in the gank bush but your adc never makes any offensive move so you can't get at the ward. You're trying to gank and the laners start pushing as soon as you approach, you tell them to stop pushing, they don't respond and 15 seconds after you leave, they get ganked and die and call you useless. You're helping two lanes snowball but the third starts crying and you're forced to stop helping your team win and start wasting your time at that lane just so he won't afk.

As much as I love playing Support and Jungle, I can answer why.

Both of these roles are aid-centered roles, meaning that your job is to aid someone to win their lane, your Adc in the case of Support and straight out all the lanes when being a jungle, which is quite the pressure by itself, then you factor this community in, yeah. Sometimes it's a pain.

SmokingPuffin2 votes

Why play a role in which you have to rely on strangers for success when you can carry in a solo lane with limited need of others help.

Because a team is only as strong as its weakest link, and your solo queue allies are much more likely to be a competent mid or top than they are to be a competent jungler or support.

BastionKross2 votes

Why no junglers? There's a brand new jungle right now and it's changing literally patch to patch. When the jungle settles down and people start working out paths and champions, the pick rate for jungle position will go up. However, it will probably still be one of the lower queued for roles, since being a good jungler relies on map awareness, decision making, and having good game sense - things a lot of players don't have. It's a hard role.

Why no supports? It takes a special, rare kind of mindset to want to set up kills instead of getting them yourself. Support is also the most difficult role to carry a game from, since you must rely on your teammates more than other roles. Most people don't like spending half the match babysitting another player, either.

Why no teambuilder? There's very little incentive to queue up as a needed role in teambuilder. If you go into a normal game, you probably won't have to fight that hard to get support or jungle most times. There's no reason to waste your time in teambuilder when you don't have to. Now, if Riot gave needed roles bonus IP for the match, then people would use it more.

Mainly the new jungle fucking sucks.

Raptamei2 votes

Because any lane that isn't winning will flame the jungler. If multiple lanes are losing, they will team up against you.

Teridax682 votes

I think there's actually a lot of in-game history to blame for this: while junglers and supports do typically get the most abuse (as a jungler main and support off-main, I've had my fair share in both roles), I feel the rarity of people in either role stems from the perception that the actual gameplay of being a support or a jungler is less fun than just laning top or mid and going for kills. While both roles tend to be fairly difficult (especially now that the jungle is a lot harder, and everyone's still adjusting), they're in a way better state than they used to be: supports have a lot more freedom of itemization and can actually deal damage now, and junglers aren't forced to chain-gank 24/7 in order to contribute to their team. However, general opinion hasn't really caught on, and the stigma of playing jungler and support has remained unchanged.

The thing is, when it comes to abuse, the flipside of playing a role that's designed to help the rest of the team is that you get to have power over them. As a support, you can literally decide who lives and who dies, and as a jungler, you and you only get to decide who you want to help. If, as a support, the marksman lambasts you when they die to their lane opponents, just mute them and start roaming. If a laner hurls insults at you even as they're asking for ganks (!), ignore them and go do your own thing. Now matter how many people threaten to report you because you "abandoned your lane" or "let top/mid/bot lane snowball", you will be in the right, and they will put themselves under reporting risk for being toxic. No rule compels you to babysit the marksman, or gank lanes on-demand, or even save the teammate who abused you when they come under attack. They will undoubtedly whine about you not helping them, but by then they should be muted. Abusing your jungler or your support is a bit like pissing off your own doctor: if you give them a hard time, they can choose to just not deal with you, and if you screw up, that's just too bad.

Ale non è male1 votes

Well, they can't, Physicians have a moral obligation (and in some legislation it is a legal obligation) to respect the Hippocratic Oath (or any kind of similar Oaths they sweared upon) and they have to care the patients even if they piss them off...as supports and junglers we should keep doing this too :D

Teridax681 votes

The Hippocratic Oath binds the physician to not harm their patients ("First, do no harm"). It does not actually require them to help people they do not wish to take under their care. I honestly think that, in the case of a teammate being toxic, sinking time and effort into them is always going to be a waste in comparison to most other alternatives. People who rage in chat tend to go on tilt and put others on tilt as well, so at that point it's just best to cut your losses and focus on helping people who are doing well and are respectful.

In the end, it's your decision. If you want to take one for the team and try to help the toxic teammate, that's up to you, but I don't think that's a requirement even if the player in question wasn't toxic at all. You decide who you want to help and how you want to go about winning the game, and at no point should that force you to obey the whims of a player who clearly isn't contributing positively to your team. In the worst case, going to help them after they rage at you will just reinforce their toxic behavior, and cause them to rage at others in an attempt to get them to obey, so be careful how you handle situations like these.

Ale non è male2 votes

The "do no harm" principle does not belong to the original Hippocratic Oath, it was a bit different formulation of a similar principle contaned into Hippocratic Oath The original phrase was " I will willingly refrain from doing any injury or wrong from falsehood"

Patients can refuse the care, but a physiclan is obliged to intervene once the patient is unconscious and its life is in danger, otherwise he can be condemned because he didn't aid the patient, unless it isn't explicited stated in the advance health care directive(aka living will)

I'm sure guys here always want support/jungler help, so supports/junglers should help them for what is in their possibilities unless/ until it is clear that there is no hope in helping certain guys because of their behaviour in-game and in-chat , and that's something pertinent to "futile medical care" and not to the "do no harm" principle quoted by you

I think we basically agree, but I just wanted to point out some medical law rules there for no substantial reason :D

I've never heard a single complaint as a jungle Rengar even though I recently started to learn how to jungle (I'm far from good). I usually only play that role if I have a friend who can play supp (which I main as Braum ). But you're right that most of the time those 2 positions get blamed the most, and so they might end up being reported by their salty teammates, which leaves those 2 positions to be the least desirable for anyone that wants a clean record.

Stars Shaper2 votes

About supports I tend to blame 2 kinds of behaviors:

  • Tanks staying in the backlines, your job is to soak damage ffs
  • Squishies going solo (for the good intention of placing wards), but please.. ping us that you are going so we can protect you...

I find the lack of will to do a simple Team Play really discouraging in this game, TB/Ranked doesn't matter, same shize.

Knight Devout2 votes

warding machine support is boring, after you land your cc chain you have to wait while dealing 40 damage per auto, and if you went mage support you are still behind the midlaner . Jungle is quite fun but you get blamed every time a laner overextend and dies.

TL;DR: no one wants the short end of the stick. Oh, did I mention the lack of variety and end-match progression supports face?

Killstrado3 votes

You probably feed top lane and then blame the support for not warding

Knight Devout1 votes

Nah, I play mostly support, because my friends don't want to play it.

I play mid or top occasionally, but I usually lose since I'm used to supporting now and the mechanics are quite different (last hitting and the fact that your spell actually hurt people).

I have more fun playing top and doing average/bad than winning botlane as a support.

it doesn't help that 99,9% of players aren't professional and thus play the game for fun.

"But Arkblue, playing support is fun".

Sure, and being fat doesn't mean being ugly, dicksize don't matter, and all the yadda yadda about politically correct lies we tell each other to feel better.

At the end of the day, it's more fun to play a midlaner mage than a support mage because endgame your cc spells also kill people. And a fighter top is funnier than a tank support because you are a damage threat , on top of having 3.5 k health and 150 average resistances.

But feel free to downvote again, as I said, I am the one that plays support, and you are the one waiting 25 minutes in team builder for me to log in.

EDIT: I realize to have come out really salty and snarky, but it's weeks since I've been trying to raise attention to those issues and still people claim that it's fine.

I just tried queueing for tb a support. 3 matches under 10 seconds.

Now, let's keep saying that support aren't underappreciated, or that if they are it's just our fault as players, if it makes easier for you to wait several minutes for a support to log in. But I still think it's Riot fault , at least for supports. At least the jungle is being tuned on PBE.

Yes, how dare people try to have fun while playing a game. The nerve.

Knight Devout2 votes

...not sure if you are ironical or you failed to understand sarcasm.

That was my point. If people play this game for fun, and the role is made so that it appeals to a small % of players, why do you dare to ask them to play a role that is *not fun *for them? "But Rito said support is fun!" yeah, go tell that to the people who queue in teambuilder as midlaners with Zed/Orianna/Whatever the fotm midlaner is.

point is, support is underappreciated/unwanted for whatever reasons. I don't care which argument you want to bring up to prove Arkblue that support is totally fun , and extremely popular, because even if you manage to convince me here and now, it doesn't change the situation with support demand in teambuilder.

And jungler is not that far behind, it's just slightly better because you don't have to be at the beck & call of a total stranger.

I repeat, downvote me all you want, that won't increase the number of support and junglers in team builder queue. You know what helps in increasing the number of junglers? Riot acknowledging that there is a problem and working to fix it, like they are doing in pbe and live with the massive changes to smite, jungle gold generation, and such.

Now, It's true that during season 4 they did a lot, but the situation back in the day was catastrophic, so that was the first step, not the finish line.

I opened quite a number of posts explaining in details why the support itemization is boring, why the role is not really fun to play, yet some people say it's fine. And then they wonder at the support numbers in team builder. I did a test, again, queued for a game as Janna, then the next game as a midlane mage. 3 seconds of queue as a support. I quit the queue as a midlane mage after 5 minutes.

You want to say that supports are fine and support mains are dicks for complaining? Fine. You also want people to dive on an underappreciated role which is both fun and unrewarding? Not fine. At the end of the day, the average lol players wants to have fun. And personally I have more fun laning than supporting. Even jungling is more fun.

So, if you agree with me that people just want to have fun, why do you blame on me if supports are scarce?

Killstrado2 votes

People who think support is boring, can't play support and don't understand anything at all about it, as a support there are so many things you need to be doing and keeping track of but noooooo these "bored idiots" will only stand around watching the adc farm and don't do anything until the adc does. Frankly if you think support is boring stay the fuck out of my lane.

Drunk Rummate2 votes

the answer is simple: player interaction

for most people, the constant interaction during the laning phase is a big aspect of what makes league of legends fun. junglers only get a small fraction of this since their farming is uncontested. compare this to an mid who can trade autos with an enemy mid in between CSing, throw out their abilities to poke, etc. and you'll see why jungling seems less 'fun' than laning.

support has the laning interaction, but you lose relevance as the game continues. you generally aren't capable of fighting 1v1 which is a lot of fun, and many of the plays you make are overshadowed by your teammates contribution. when thresh flash -> flay -> hooks someone the name that pops up on the screen is the ADC's, not thresh's.

FiendOfOne1 votes

As a jungle main, yeah. I get it. I've been flamed and called bad by a losing lane while we were winning the game, and everyone but them was doing well (They seemed to continuously make bad decisions). I've noticed that most often it's bot laners, less often top laners, and almost never mid. Maybe mid players are just more chill? I dunno. But yeah, I have long noticed that if we lose the game/are losing/losing a lane/etc, it's either the jungler's or support's fault. If we do awesome, the carries did all the work.

I've gotten a 1v4 quadra kill, saved our base, had 80% kill participation, and a positive KD (WAY positive, and not even counting KDA), most kills in the game, and our 6/5/6 ADC was so amazing, let me tell you.

It's a thankless job, but it needs to be done, and I still love jungling.

Kalytron1 votes

It might be because mid lane/top are comfortable doing things on their own. They can stand off with their opponent and everything they do - a mis-step, or failure to ward, or whatever - is all on them. They know it. They're islands. Bot lane is a lane dependent on multiple people. There can be a stand off and if any one person steps out of line ( and there are lot more feet down there ) it usually means a death for both. For a lot of bot laners they struggle to catch back up if the enemy team gets a double on them, too.

Plus they'll rail on their support. I main supports and if we are squared bot, or are losing - I am always just thrilled if the jungler sticks his nose in the lane. Don't even really need a committed gank. Just an appearance is helpful. As a support, I always try to help the junglers - even if its just steering my piano to the side a little to toss them a heal over the wall and I always give them vision on the the starting buff they aren't getting first to protect from invades. If my ADC is a jerk I will just abandon them and roam and ward/heal/casually stroll through lanes helping so the jungler can focus on getting pumped up on his/her jungling until the ADC straightens up. I love you guys. ^_^ So thanks.

FiendOfOne1 votes

Honestly, I love Support mains too, mostly because of a feeling of solidarity. I've noticed (much like this thread) that those are the two roles that tend to get blamed for everything, and still have very important jobs in the game.

And yes, I am well aware of the knowledge of my existence and what that mains. I'll pull off a gank that I know won't get a flash or kill sometimes just to prove I was there and apply a bit of pressure (I sitll mostly at least get a flash though). But yeah. Supports and junglers. :D

Kalytron1 votes

Juuusst the two of us. Etc. But I think in general if people stopped being so singularly focused on thing there would be better queue times for groups to grab up a support or jungle. They just don't pay attention to the map, and blame everyone else when they don't. Hopefully this isn't a problem in higher ranks* who aren't using the team builder.

TheFrozenIsles1 votes

I just been playing the normal map again(I like the other maps better) and I have let to be blame for losing . I all was play support as that is the short wait.

The only time I got yell at was not dropping wards fast enough for one guy. That said I can see jungle getting blame. It all so does not help that the jungle is harder then it once was.

SmokingPuffin1 votes

I think a few different things are happening here:

  • Part of the story here is simply that support is less popular than other roles. Most people like making kills and don't like doing the behind the scenes work to set them up.
  • The new jungle changes have many people feeling uncomfortable and afraid of being blamed for losses.
  • Players who want roles that generally aren't contested in draft modes have less incentive to do this team builder thing.
  • Most champions tend to be designed for top or mid, and there are few support champions in general.
Maple Crusader1 votes

I am probably one of the few people who actually enjoy playing support. I don't support all the time in tb because I like to practice my laning in top or mid.

Junglers are so rare in tb is because the role has a crap ton of pressure. It makes me really peeved when I see the junglers on my team not doing their job in pressuring any lanes or securing objectives. Junglers are not supposed to win lanes for their teammates, but they sure as hell factor into their teams gaining an advantage. Since the dragon objective is especially snowbally, it's incredibly important for junglers to secure the dragon as much as possible to aid in their team's victory.

Because everyone hates you and they don't want you to queue in a reasonable amount of time. True story.

The main problem is that whe rarely have proper premades in this mode. People create a new room just to make sure they can play top & mid. You rarely see a premade botlane creating a lane. It's similar with the mid/jungle premades. It just rarely happends if they known they can play it in 5 seconds on blind or draft.

I keep repeating it over & over again that whe need templates, quick settings and other small tweaks to the teambuilder to make it work.

jungle main here, and yes this community has a vendetta towards junglers. doesnt bother me usually within the explicit criticism there are truths there. so its all a learning experience until im rank 1.

I'm perfectly ok with it; it just means I get instant queues whenever I hit the support button. And I always play mage support, so I still get to take part in the action. Really I just love dropping a Tibbers on top of the entire opposing team and then running away laughing while the aoe and the rest of my team eat them alive.

I was really liking the new jungle too playing as Voli, until I went four games in a row going 6-8/2-4/7-9, ganking every lane, getting dragons and still coming up with a loss...

I've seen a LOT less hate on supports lately (ofc I don't play ranked much, so), as long as you aren't stealing cs/kills, if they wanna bitch let em bitch. Your end score will show em. Its so easy to carry as a support, as long as your team isn't trolling. I even play weird support picks (Ahri, TF, Malphite, etc.) and in the end they don't hate me, because I know how to support.
