  • It's safer and more reliable to put the ball on someone like malphite or leona who can easily initate and then ult after they go in, then to try and walk up and q-ult somewhere in a teamfight.
  • You don't need to kill the enemy laner to be useful, oriana is a utility carry. Just farm up that cs without dying and land a few good ults and clutch shields in team fights and you'll have done your job as well or better than if you had outplayed and killed the enemy laner a few times as a different mid laner.
  • Max q in lane for cheap poke and waveclear, the damage goes up and the cooldown goes down with rank but the mana cost stays at 50. It doesn't do as much in a single poke as maxing w and going q-w, but you can just q-q-q farm more often and for less mana, and it gives you much better control over where the ball is at any time.
  • It is far faster and therefor harder for the enemy to react if you have the ball already out at max range and then move it onto them with q then it is to try and hit them with it when it's attached to you. Any decent enemy knows this and will be wary of walking too close to the ball, so position it in lane to make it difficult for them to move around and cs safely, and punish them with q or q-w anytime they don't respect the balls position and get too close.
  • Take a defensive summoner like heal or barrier, or teleport for utility, and focus on not dying more than getting kills. Your job is primarily to provide a big ult in teamfights and a high powered shield for your teamates, the damage you do is a bonus so don't take risks to get a little more damage off. This is especailly true since all your cooldowns are low which makes every second you stay alive more and more valuable.
  • Go for athenes or morellos first for regen and cdr, then deathcap. Get the rest of your cdr from runes and masteries.
  • You can win a lot of level 1 trades by shielding yourself and auto attacking because of your passive and how strong your base shield and resists from the ball are compared to most champs early offensive power.
  • If you take q at level one you can use it to safely move through the bushes and place a trinket ward in the enemy jungle to help your lanes and jungler get some valuable intel on the enemy junglers movements. Don't die for the ward though, if you q a bush and people are there just back off.
  • Don't take too long trying to find the perfect shockwave every fight, that could get your team killed. A 5 man ult is great, but a 1-2 man ult on squishy targets or to save your own life is good enough for an average use.
  • If you kill the enemy mid or force them back, push the wave and base. Don't try and auto the tower, orianna is 100% if she gets ganked from behind at the enemy tower so it's not worth the risk to get a tiny amount of damage off early game.
  • Similar to above, don't stand around trying to poke the enemy under their tower, their jungler will come and you'll die. Just back off until the wave resets and try to get any cs you can with q when it's about to die to minimize your risk.
  • None of your spells cause you to stop moving, so take advantage of this and don't just stand there when you're casting, being a moving target makes it harder for the enemy to hit you and most champions DO have to stop to use spells which gives you an edge.
  • It's far cheaper and more effective to clear a wave with q out - wait - q back then it is to q-e
  • Never lose track of your ball, if you whiff an ult in a teamfight that can cost the whole game since it's most of what you bring to the table, missing it entirely makes the fight basically a 4v5. Always double and triple check your balls location before ulting.
  • Though valuable, your ult cooldown is still only a minute long at rank 1 with no cdr. Don't be afraid to use it when you hit 6 in lane just to brust down your enemy and zone them or force them back if they're only 5, since the zoning or time spent backing will give you plenty of time for your ult to come back up before they have their own ult ready.
  • Your ult has an animation it does before the effect kicks in. Do not try and q-ult someone at absolute max range, they'll have plenty of time to walk out of it or use mobility spells / flash to escape. Generally speaking it's safest to q-ult when the q itself makes contact and does damage since the ult will still hit and displace them if they use mobility from that far from the edge (barring instant movement like flash or ezriel e)
  • Though blue makes your life easier, with proper cs'ing, efficient waveclear and poke from q, and a first item mana regen like morellos ors athenes you will bne 100% fine and effective all game without blue - even against an enemy who does have blue. So don't give your jungler a hard time if he needs or wants to keep blue for whatever reason and just be happy if he gives it up or you can steal it from an enemy or their jungle.
  • You're not a duelist. Late game you WILL lose a 1v1 to anyone who specializes in dueling including any full build adc. If you don't have ult up its not even close, so don't bother and stick to your team for fights.
  • If the enemy backs, push the lane and drop a ward on the enemy wraiths then do your own wraiths if up before you back. That's the time to do those things, not when there are minions in lane to take or an enemy is around who can contest you.
  • If you have the mana and cooldowns to spare, spam your w when grouped with your team for greater teamwide mobility. Just getting around faster can be a huge deciding factor in objectives.
  • Never try and flash after someone to q them for a kill. If your auto attack isn't enough to finish, it's not gonna happen. In the best case the q is barely not fast enough and you only hit the w and they probably live, and in the worst case your ball is somewhere else and it takes a million years to get there and you look and feel like an idiot.

That's all I got for now.

Pretty much what this thorough guide says, lol.

But one crucial thing I want to add is that practice knowing the range of your Q if you quick cast this and you should; sometimes I've seen Ori messed up so badly cus they thought they're in range to command the ball but they're not.

Forgot to mention that because it's so second nature, my bad.

I use quickcast with range indicators, so if I hold down the skill the range is shown and then I can release it if it's gonna be in range. I do this to remind myself of my ranges every so often in lane but generally I just tap and release to instant cast when I know for sure that my targets are in range.

Fantastic post, thank you

What about builds? Is the recommended reasonably good?

Glad to help.

Your going to want either morellos or athenes based on their team comp, then deathcap, sorc boots, and then voidstaff if they have a lot of mr otherwise ludens echo, finishing your build up situationally with a void if you haven't got it yet, zhonias, etc.

I can't speak for The Sword Dancer,

but generally I rush grail, then it's all situational from there. I love Rylais, Deathcap, Zhonyas, etc. Just take a look at their team comp, your team comp, how your team is doing in general, and build from there.

Also, if you find yourself needing a last item and don't want to buy a defensive item, try Nashor's Tooth. Adds a ton to your dps if you AA when you can.

pretty sure the only thing i miss here is:

  • on long distance e is faster for reposition than q, if you´re positioned far from your ball use e first to get it closer and then q to get it where you want it to be fast
