Does everybody only play whats OP up there? When i play with some higher elo Friends games seem to be infested with the most OP champs. is it always like that?

It's allways a good idea to learn to play the flavour of the month champions but it's also wise to have your one trick wonder champ ready for action.

Most ppl are one trick ponies

Judging from champion.gg (Plat+ games), it seems most people play the OPs, but there are always players who stick to their best champions.

Generally, you want to learn how the FotM champions play (both so you can use them and know how to play against them).

That said, you are generally better off sticking to your familiar picks rather than picking whatever is FotM since you are more experienced and they better suit your playstyle.

Kinda, though haveing some pocket-/counter-picks works quite well. However, the higher you get in elo, the lower the skill differnece between each player gets and thus the more influence do the champion picks have. this doesn't mean you can't succeed with an off meta pick, but it sure is a bit easier if you abuse the currently op stuff, as long as you know what makes them op and play them right. if you just can't get the hang on a current meta pick, then don't force it. A well played off-meta champ still beats a bad played meta pick any time.

I made it a point for myself to play only off-meta champions since I began the game. Over time, I found that this had gave me a pretty good advantage over the competition in ranked because:

  1. I get experience playing against meta champions, so I know how to play against them.
  2. People have don't have enough experience playing against my off-meta champions, so they are at a disadvantage.

And rarely:

.3. If my off-meta pick becomes fotm (top Rammus), I stomp them because I know all their weaknesses.

a lot of one trick ponies, but its good to know meta champs just to avoid countering yourself.

Not really. We definitely play the OP's more than low elos but there's also a lot of people that stick to their mains and dump on all of the OP abusers. You don't see a lot of random picks though. If someone picks an uncommon champ, you can almost guarantee they're very experienced at that champion. No random first time Galio's up here.
