Should Lethality Be Melee Only?

Steel Blossom··31 votes·1,943 views

Write wants me to write my thoughts, but I really can't without being toxic as all hell. I'll just let the community's votes decide what kind of message this post will send. Edit: Think about it though. If champs like Lucian actually loses Lethality altogether, then Riot might finally buff them properly and actually fix the problematic characters, instead of just tweaking items and praying that the Butterfly effects can do the trick.

maybe make it less effective on ranged champions, IDK

Steel Blossom3 votes

If Hydra can be coded as melee only, then I don't see why Lethality cannot receive the same treatment.

Proxy3452 votes

Thats probably because of runes and masteries, that would require extra work to code.

Steel Blossom3 votes

Hm, Jhin can take atkspeed runes and not get atkspeed, right? And it even gets converted into AD, so I'd say the coding is already there.

MrryZ2 votes

well, he does get the attackspeed its jsut that the attackspeed stat isn't applied as attack speed in Jhins case; it's used in the calculation for his AD

Spaceman5pff2 votes

I think lethality should exist for ranged champions, but it needs to be capped pretty hard.

ChaddyFantome5 votes

No, but i think both it and lifesteal should have 50% effectiveness on ranged champions.

You can't limit an entire stat to melee. That's ridiculous.

Steel Blossom9 votes

The only thing that's ridiculous is the idea of putting diversity before balance.

Thing is, Lethality isn't inherently broken on ranged champions. Some Fighter/Bruisers abuse it more than them.

Like who?

And I'd disagree on your first sentence.

Currently it's: Flat Armor Penetration = LETHALITY × (0.6 + 0.4 × Target's level ÷ 18) <---- This should be melee champions and Ranged champions should get it reduced, maybe:

Flat Armor Penetration = LETHALITY × (0.5 + 0.4 × Target's level ÷ 18)

or some stupid calculation like that

Lucian favorite adc all time

shit for years

finally gets to have his spotlight

rito takes it away bc rito doesnt just nerf/buff champs, they fuck with the items that fuck with 50+ champs

GULAG 4 U2 votes

No, less effective on ranged champions. Not inexistant.

They should make lethality a status that scales on certain abilities just like ad and ap. It would make it real easier.

Steel Blossom3 votes

Or just force the carries to stick to crits and %pens. Riot doesn't have trouble forcing reworks down our throats, so I don't see why they can't do the same shits with items.

I do believe some marksman are quite reliant on armpen, and some should be pretty much forced to built crit. The problem is everyone can potentially benefit from our new lethality. And its pretty awful. I know it would be a hard job but riot ought to think about adding lethality scake stats on every ad skill for now on just to make things clarified and balanced to be in check.

Like say a zeds Q will have more lethality scaling than a MF Q. Sounds neat and fair doesnt it?

Steel Blossom1 votes

Lethality was meant to be a caster stat. If an ADC's damage is dealing more damage with spells than with his autos, there is something wrong with the champion.

DemiluniS1 votes

who defined that a caster champion have to be melee? Varus Graves MissFortune Lucian are all caster type marksmen, and there's nothing wrong with them

Steel Blossom1 votes

"caster type marksmen" is an inherently flawed idea. The whole idea of marksmen was to have high damage with no downtime due to the nature of autoattacks.

DemiluniS1 votes

How exactly is it flawed?! They are picked for the exact same reason that Jinx Ashe Caitlyn are picked for......except they are not right click you to death, that what makes them unique and fun. Or you want them all to build the same and got the same power curve just for the sake of it? You really not bringing any argument to support yourself other than saying "it's toxic, flawed...." what exactly flawed and toxic about it?

Steel Blossom1 votes

I really don't know how I can be more clear with this. Marksmen are supposed to be the ranged auto class. They have enough DPS to kill a team if they don't get put down quickly, BECAUSE their damage comes from autos, something not limited by CDs. Their power is also balanced out by the fact that autoattacks are more item-reliant than abilities, so they have a longer ramp-up time throughout the game. A "caster type" marksmen not only removes their weakness early on, but also gives them the freedom to either burst their fellow backliners OR kite the front line. It's like saying a tanky, CC-oriented, and bursty assassin. Does my point come across when I put it that way?

DemiluniS1 votes

no it doesn't. All you saying that you want all the marksmen feel and play the same way, with same itemization and power curve, just because they are ranged ad carries. Itemization suppose to either enchant strengths or neutralize weaknesses. If a champion synergizes well with specific items, why he should be put into the "box" of building the classic auto attack based marksmen even tho he can do massive damage with his abilities?

Steel Blossom1 votes

In a sense, I do want all marksmen to feel and play the same way, because I want the class's strengths and weaknesses to revolve around their heavy emphasis on autoattacking. A champion that has the benefits of casters while also having potent and ranged autos, that just feels much too strong for me personally, but I guess we'll have no agree to disagree.

it's good you are not part of the balance team. Why even bother making new ADCs then? or new mages? or new champions in general? we should just delete every single champion in the game until there is just one of each class since i mean everyone should feel and play the same way. No one is allowed to be unique. Every single champion should just have a preset build that gets slowly filled as time goes on so you don't even need to get gold

I'm rather sure Riot likes diversity in item builds, they are already wanting to address adc's itemization, they are changing item 3153 and item 3035 as we speak

Steel Blossom3 votes

They like diversity, but should they focus on it over game balance? We aren't really doing this whole discussion for Riot, since the chances of them taking this into consideration is pretty slim. It's just us players trading opinions, and Riot's preferences don't matter here.

Variks the Loyal1 votes

I think Lethality should have a reduced benefit for ADCs.

Currently, Lethality is 60% Base Armor Pen when the target is level 18, right? What if it was the original 40% for ranged attacks?

Steel Blossom1 votes

I think I've said this already in another comment, but I'll repeat myself; why fix some of the problem, when you can fix all of it? Balance > diversity, and there is no room for negotiation on that matter.

Skorch2 votes

Reducing isnt fixing "some" of the problem, it could potentially make adcs better with it reduced. You are implying it existing at all is a problem and that the fact it exists is riot just wanting diversity over balance. And anyone who disagrees is wrong.

It doesnt get more close-minded than that

I actually like Yomumu on MF, its like one of the few +movement speed item in the game, and the only one that gives AD. Which is really needed for repositioning with her as position is very important for MF.

Steel Blossom1 votes

item 3078

SpongebobIsLife2 votes

so expensive and not worth building on mf.

Steel Blossom1 votes

Q applies onhit effect tho

Ackelope2 votes

yeah but MF has the worst base attack damage in the game by a VERY large margin. They nerfed it a ton because her passive is potentially so strong, so while building tforce on her was okay for a while, the proc is worse on her than literally every other champion in the game. Her level 18 base AD is 63. The next lowest after her, Kindred, has 82 base AD at level 18. Triforce is just gives so much less damage on MF than anyone else at this point that it is not really worth buying, since a good portion of the gold returns a comparitively shitty amount of dmg.

Serika Zero2 votes

there's a problem with this item: item 3071 is better for MF as it applies on her E and R, while item 3078 won't deal extra damage or peal armor on those spells.

second problem is that it requires you to hit something for mobility. Often in a fight, you need mobility to position yourself while you don't hit anything. As MF, most of your damage comes from your R. And we build BC anyway for armor shred over time. Yes, the shred is less than a last whisper's which costs less. But we get armor shred, cdr, some ms if we hit stuff and hp to survive assassins a bit more.

Trinity is really a waste on MissFortune tho

But i did make a mistake, there's one more item that gives you movement speed. item 3153 . But this one requires an enemy champion nearby. So, it won't help you very often reposition for an ult.

SpongebobIsLife1 votes

I agreed for the most part it should be it should, but certain champs are balanced/do much better with pen then their alternate builds. Mainly Lucian, Quinn, and MF. Lucian to a higher degree than others as he was in a pretty bad spot before s6 when the build came around. Crit mf is a thing as well but it invalidates her q and her passive becomes weaker late game as you generally wont be switching targets that much. Quinn just needs the snowball potential bc she is practically an assassin, i understand crit quinn has been a thing, but I think this suits her a lot better.

Steel Blossom1 votes

If the champions you mentioned do lose lethality, then Riot might finally be able to look at their problematic kits and give them the proper and champion-specific fixes that they've been needing.

SpongebobIsLife1 votes

well, lucian was crap after the pen changes, and what did they change? They changed pen and when someone asked riot about possible changes to lucian, they said they will see depending on how the LETHALITY changes hit him. It was meddler who stated it btw, they are knowingly balancing adcs around lethality.

Steel Blossom1 votes

This is a discussion of whether or not lethality on ADC is a good idea in the eyes of us board circlejerkers. What Riot thinks or does is of no concern to us.

SpongebobIsLife1 votes

what im saying is, im doubtful riot is going to look at their kits.

Steel Blossom1 votes

If they didn't have the crutch of lethality, then riot will have to.

SpongebobIsLife1 votes

i think what really needs to be looked at are adcs as a whole. ADCs opt for the pen build because it's guaranteed damage, whereas crit is probable damage, and in a meta as snowbally as this, you want reliable damage.

I think it's time for Riot to seriously look at RNG.

no that's not why they go for the lethality build over the crit build. The crit build is a late game build while the lethality build is an early to mid game build. The game ends way too early for crit builds to actually even matter so ADCs have then two choices. Either go for the crit build and hope to god that the game doesn't end/is decided before they are is relevant or go for an early focused build so that they are able to do something

SpongebobIsLife1 votes

Pretty much what i said, just with more detail. Compare an early gb to an early ie, which one is stronger?

LordOfTheLeague1 votes

Edit: Lethality should only affect spells imo.

That would make ranged champs think twice if they want burst with lethality or dps with crit.

Steel Blossom2 votes

Zed Talon MonkeyKing Pantheon item 3070

LordOfTheLeague1 votes

Well they deal damage far more from spells than auto attacks whereas carries AD deals as much if not more damage from auto attacks.

Lethality/armor pen exist in the first place to allow AD casters to deals damage with their spells.

Steel Blossom1 votes

Did you read what he said..."Lethality should only affect auto attacks imo."

LordOfTheLeague1 votes

oh damn I wanted to say the opposite. Thanks.

NekoniClaws1 votes

I didn't realise how sick I was of building crit on Jhin until lethality was buffed. It's just having reliable damage that I love; being able to duel the enemy ADC and it not be 'whomsoever the RNG blesses shall be the victor!'

Having said that, it could be broken. I cba to math out whether crit or lethality does more damage. Also have to say that the movement speed bonuses on item 3142item 3814 are MAJOR boosts to Jhin, and allow him to farm sidelanes and get deeper into teamfights, and if everyone has to run away, -the ADC isn't the slowest target for once. This definitely feels like a factor.

MF definitely has a problem in lieu of her Ult, as it's guaranteed now to do 'slightly too much' damage to react to in time. It used to be you were dead only if she critted- and her dead if she didn't.

I don't know my melees like I do my adcs, so if some of those are abusing lethality, I can't say.
