A Proposal for the Support Gold Issue

Hey guys! Doing some thinking here on gold generation for supports. Before I start -- yes, I know some support items are strong, and that some item rebalancing might be necessary for this idea to work. Anyway!

A quick look at Champion.gg shows the highest average support income at around 11k, which is roughly equal to the lowest average income for any of the other roles. If you take out the wave-clearing mage supports you get significantly closer to 9-9.5k.

This seems like an issue, because, frankly, players like to buy items, and the support often needs to buy MORE disposable items as people like to see them warding.

The statistics show that supports are lagging behind by 20-30% gold value -- I'm going to make a suggestion here to take a meaningful chunk out of that in a way that isn't heavily exploitable by other roles.

#The Suggestion I'd like to propose tagging gold generation support items with an additional new passive:

[Name Pending]: Whenever a nearby ally claims the bounty on an enemy minion, gain X gold. Enemy siege minions are worth double.

This isn't appealing to laners (save for the possibility of a Spellthief's mid laner taking it to opt into a gank-heavy midlane that pushes and shares gold, which I'm frankly not opposed to as a strategic hoice in principle), buffs support income in a way that plays nicely to their role (enabling the carry to survive safely), possibly enables unusual bottom lane double-Targon's strategies (which just sounds fun), and provides supports with the additional income they likely need to become an appealing choice.

Yes, it could shake up the meta -- I'm well aware that more gold income could open up unusual bottom laners or off-supports, but I'm not sure that's necessarily a BAD thing. Or, at least, something that wouldn't be enough of a problem not to run a test or two to see how it shakes up.

You also might need to put some additional form of gold generation on Bard and/or Ivern, as they're supports who aren't playing the lane game as much, but both have easy things to attach it to (Ivern could gain extra gold from enemy camps, for example, or Bard a small amount for collecting Meeps).

#Thoughts? Major things I've overlooked?

I don't think there's a need to introduce new ways for gold generation. The items themselves are already pretty overloaded when you look at them but they just don't provide much.

We just need to buff gold generation on item 3302 item 3303 so that they're not beaten by the most passive gold generation in coin.

They're not actually beaten by that much though, which is the concern -- support often just isn't seen as a very fun role, and I think injecting a little more flexibility in itemization power might be what it needs. Even coin supports often feel like they can't really buy what they'd like to.

Then support items will need to take a hit, either they cost more gold or they are weaker. Having supports being able to buy AP items alongside support items is a recipe for disaster in this current meta.

In the current meta, perhaps. But yes, part of this suggestion would mean you'd need to re-approach some existing support itemization and possibly some ratios as far as scaling goes. That's definitely the sort of change that would always have to occur.

your running the wrong runes then. relic shield has the lowest gold income out of all of them but also the highest out of all of them as far as potential wise. meaning out side laning your not going to proc it, unlike talisman which is random but you dont have to do anything and frost queens all you have to do is poke or hit. i never fall behind on gold in my games as alistar ever. run gold per 10 sec seals and quints and youll be fine. scaling or flat armor marks and scaling or flat mr glphys
