What does it mean to be "squishy"?

Ralanr··23 votes·5,593 views

Because I assume it means, "I have to play careful since anyone can kill me."

But I feel like people I talk to think it means, "Only people with damage can kill me. Gotta be careful around them."

If being squishy didn't mean that anyone could kill you, then is it really being squishy?

It depends. Some champions are a bit unfair in how they're almost unkillable by the squishy but can actually threaten bursting/pseudo-bursting the squishy. Typically champions who can build full Tank and still maintain this threat. (i.e Poppy). Then there's champions who are almost unkillable, but do not maintain this threat like Shen. Shen feels infinitely more fair than Poppy because I may not be able to easily kill him, but he can't easily kill me.

Then you go into bruiser territory where they build 1-2 damage items. This makes them realistically killable, but threaten kill pressure. This feels fair because with good play, either side can kill each other.

Alternatively there's this line of thinking; "Why am I spending Gold on damage and taking a risk by being squishy, when their Tank is spending Gold on defense and still killing me just as easily?" This line of thinking is what created Tank Ekko and Tank Fizz. Why take the risk of being a squishy melee Assassin, when I can build Tank and still do my job while infinitely reducing the risk?

shen is also kneecapped to hell.

In a fight between most squishy and tanks, tanks should win, not one combo win, but still win.

Think of it like a village vs a glacier. the village can pop up and exist for a while, and its all good, and the village can build things to hold the thng down and can try to cut the glacier back, but try as they might the glacier will still roll over them in time.

NineTailedMystic2 votes

Regardless of numbers, Shen's damage is backloaded into 3 Q autos, compared to Poppy whose burst is pretty frontloaded.

Tanks should win through attrition, not doing 50% of a squishy's health at a minimum.

Honestly, squishy natural defenses should be upped ever so slightly. There's not much of a point going glass cannon when I can still burst squishies on 300-400 AP late game. Why buy that deathcap when I can get a GA or HP/AP item or whatever.

Nice try im pretty sure any logical people complains about the ways they die. Remember pre rework lb and tank ekko yeah

Ralanr4 votes

Of course people complain about how they die. That's normal.

So?

counterplay????? you should stop circlejerking so much dude

Ralanr5 votes

How am I circlejerking? I just see people complain that they are squishy as if it doesn't mean they die easily.

I just find that confusing is all.

I know right? Marksmen are so fragile these days without their support . . . item 3812 item 3814 item 3508 item 3022 item 3026 item 3156 item 3139 item 3046 item 3094 item 3053 item 3071 item 3072 At least mages don't have more than 2 safety nets.

essence reaver?

ZT Xperimentor2 votes

Cooldown reduction, critical chance, and mana restore . . . while still having a significant boost to attack damage. Marksmen already have low mana costs (and/or high mana regeneration), generally making them resourceless unless they're purposely spamming to burn out. And this item makes that issue negligible without sacrificing anything. As for being a safety net, more inadvertently than directly; as several marksmen have some kind of defensive ability, which can be spammed more with cooldown reduction.

An Enemy Sutando1 votes

item 3508 - I fail to see how this item acts defensively. It's an offensive/utility item.

item 3094 - Again, this does nothing notable to aid a squishy defensively.

item 3053 - This one is sub-optimal on ADCs, or anyone really.

item 3022 Again, sub-optimal on ADCs.

item 3071 - Once again, sub-optimal on most ADCs.

ZT Xperimentor2 votes

Read the other comment's explanation.

Range means more distance someone has to go to reach them, if they can kill you before you are close enough to attack, that's safety by proxy.

It was abused by marksmen before it's initial nerf, more of a backhanded reminder of the lack of forethought that goes into designing at times.

See previous.

Still used on rapid attack marksmen, such as graves & lucian.

A fed marksmen with Mallet, is suddenly a fed marksman that isnt as squishy as they were, less able to burst them quickly, aaanndd when your chasing/running their keeping your pace down to do what they want.

ZT Xperimentor2 votes

Hence my earlier comment about them having excessive safety nets.

What does it mean to be full-tank, zero damage?

Because I assume it means,"I have to rely on my team since I don't do enough damage to kill anyone".

But I feel like people I talk to think it means,"Only people who also have defenses should be able to survive my damage. Gotta avoid fighting them."

If building no damage doesn't mean that you can't kill anyone, then is it really being no damage?

I would think so too, but then the 5 items ADC/yasuo/yi/fiora comes and kills my tank in 3 seconds while he literally cant damage him duo to his lifesteal.

Generally speaking, Tanks need a base level of damage to function in lane. Otherwise, they would get out pushed, out farmed, and bullied out of lane. Similar problem with Jungle, they need to keep up with their counterparts, or they will get out leveled. So the only Tank who doesn't actually care about damage is the support tank. (And as a support main, I really don't want to be obligated to playing the teams tank.)

I think the real trick though, is to shape Tank's damage into AoE, so that they are not doing a ton of damage to a single Target. (But it could mean that they deal a lot of Total damage in the end game stats) You could also use a Damage amp against minions, to insure that Tank damage isn't oppressive against champions.

But regardless, Glass cannons are Glass cannons. If you don't build any defenses, and your opponent doesn't build any offenses. The enemy tank's damage is going to be comparable at all stages of the game. (Notable changes though, would be increased damage in abilities as they level)

Hyrum Graff4 votes

Similarly, just because you built tanky does not mean you should survive 10 seconds of a full offensive build marksman wailing on you. Against a tanky opponent, though, you should expect to survive literally forever. Balance in all things, folks.

News at 10.

Being squishy simply means that it takes relatively less nominal damage to kill you. It has nothing to do with who can/can't kill you. Also, damage is damage, regardless of whether it is applied to a tank or a squishy.

With that said, some "tanks" DrMundo do more damage than others because of how difficult it is for them to actually apply their damage. All of that has to be considered.

An Enemy Sutando2 votes

Mundo isn't really a tank though. He's closer to your Illaois and Garens than your Malphites and Nautiluses. In other words; he's a Juggernaut.

Crimzyn2 votes

LOL well squishy means you have a low amount of health and armor values. Meaning you have no defense.

It really has nothing to do with what types or amounts of damage others can do. It's about how much damage you can take.

Sona o/ man even most vegetable builds can kill her. low health pool , low defense. two main factors that make a character squishy.

she is still my "main" tho i love her!

she builds full squishy tho, and can't avoid rushing locket/redemption for hp+resistances as her utility is trash without AP

yes but Janna X rubick made my point clearer

BLACK REALM GOD2 votes

being squishy means that you start off with a lower health pool and it either scales slower or not at all. from beginning to end game you end up with lower hp and lower defensive stats when comparing the same build on two different champions.

I don't know anything about you. For all I know, I'm about to describe you.

But the bulk of people who play League of Legends also still have their mothers do their laundry and check their homework. That is, they're not even legal, they're minors in high school. I remember high school; I don't remember being very clever. Usually, eking out a win in something as action-intensive as a MOBA relied on gimmicks, even poorer opponents or imbalance. The gist of it is, they're high schoolers. Asking just about anything of them is ill-advised, as far as results are concerned.

I can go on for hours-- why this is a perfectly viable reason to never play ranked, why this justifies a team queue in ranked, why League has encouraged the wrong behaviors and most openly embraced the least sustainable demographic-- hours. But man, if I do all that and find out you're a high schooler I swear to god man so help me with the lord as my witness

But seriously. In my position, I could readily be dealing with people over ten years my junior. There's going to be a loss in translation; that's only natural. I imagine it's probably just the same for you.

TheSnacken2 votes

I dunno about anyone else, but I consider "squishy" to be less than 2.5k effective health (the amount of total damage required to kill you, without accounting for sustain effects like healing or regeneration) when late-game rolls around.

Basically, if it takes less than 2.5k damage from anyone to kill you, you're squishy. You're vulnerable enough to be killed by:

-A few stray skillshots -Most of an Assassin or Mage burst combo -The sweeping damage of a teamfight (meaning you have to be careful where you stand to attack) -Anything else of this sort

Basically, if you're someone who can be killed easily enough to be focussed, or if getting stunned is a death sentence because you're no longer able to protect yourself, whether you're being focussed or not.

Most champions are not squishy when lv16-18 comes up. By that same note, if you aren't "squishy" by this definition (as a matter of opinion, I'm hardly LCS material), you shouldn't be whining about your team not protecting you. You should be playing more carefully.

YoungSirJ0ey1 votes

I mean, yeah, that is what squishy means. The second definition is basically what tanky means, or at least what being a bruiser means.

TimX24968B2 votes

I thought it meant "soft and yielding to the touch"

(at least thats what the dictionary says)

woodvsmurph1 votes

Champs with low base hp and low base resistances (armor+mr). They also typically do not build much in terms of armor or mr.

Tanks and bruisers have high base damage both to farm effectively and to give them some meaningful way of dealing damage in fights. Thus even if they build zero or one offensive item, they are still a threat to adc's, mids, supports, and some carry junglers early on in 1v1 scenarios. They pay for this by lacking range - so that enemy ranged squishies (mages, supports in some cases, and adc's) must use their range advantage to overcome the base stat advantage of many melees. For the longest time, this was around 4-5 items for most adc's. Thus adc's were late-game carries while bruisers, tanks, and mages (who could delete someone quickly in mid-game fights) had more influence early/mid game.

All that said, a tank or bruiser can be squishy. If one team gets too far ahead, the tank/bruiser cannot get enough resistances fast enough. Just look to the NA LCS finals and watch "tank" nautilus get melted. Or... a tank or bruiser could itemize for damage instead of tankiness - like building 4 damage items on Darius Garen Riven Fiora . Because they have 4 damage items, their innate base tankiness compared to some other champs is not nearly enough to survive focused fire by 3-4 enemies in a late game teamfight. Almost certainly their one tank item will be item 3026 . This gives them a CHANCE to delete an enemy carry (due to their excessive amount of damage items) and then revive after the enemy team nukes them down. But they would be a "squishy" champ in my books with 4 damage items and only 1 resistance or resistance+hp item to their name.

Squishy vs High damage: Near instant death

Squishy vs Moderate damage: Death after a 4-7 second struggle if you aren't protected or full build.

Squishy vs Low damage: Unless you are behind or on critical HP, you are probably not going to die from this. They, however, can make you easy prey for the others.

Squishies should always be on their toes, but they should have priorities. It's a problem if your ADC gets ulted by Camille in a baron fight. It's GG if they get ulted by Syndra.

Asayake 5150glow1 votes

Honestly, I just don't like that my 0/10 lane opponent can still oneshot me because I didn't build bruiser.

Assists and CS mean a lot as well.

Yeah but just having decent CS and being able to oneshot is stupid. That's because everyone can oneshot post lvl ~6 without any kills or trading, which is, in my opinion, completely dumb.

Oneshot potential is just too high as it is. Taking a bad trade should result in needing to back and missing CS/taking tower damage, or dying if I choose to stick around after. Right now, taking a bad trade means death.

Yeah, especially in laning imo.
