Now that Phone Verification has been implemented it can be used to solve several issues

If your phone number is linked to all of your accounts and you have to use two-factor login at all times (password + code) this would solve more than Clash smurfing:

  1. Account Sharing/Hacking would be minimized as whoever is trying to play from your account wouldl need the code from your phone to login
  2. Smurfing in lower ELO ranked would be entirely impossible since the matchmaker would have access to data from all of your accounts (being in Diamond IV on your main account will automatically bump up your smurf's MMR to at least low Platinum)
  3. Consistent negative behavior on more than one account could get not only all of your current accounts banned, but your phone number too - rendering you unable to create a new account - unless you link it to a different number (new accounts can be kept locked out of matchmade game modes [or at least ranked ones] and the Hextech Crafting System until they're linked to a phone number)
  4. Changing the initially linked phone number could be made changeable in two ways - either by paying a very large sum of RP (20K or maybe more) or by sending a ticket to a special section of Riot Games support dealing only with that, but you would have to verify your identity before you're allowed to change the number (that can be an automated system) - this part is to attempt to stop account trading by making accounts extremely expensive, but can potentially be problematic if you have to change your phone number for some reason.

What if i use TWO phones? Crazy idea right? How about me changing phones for reasons that have fucking nothing to do with league? I now have to throw away account i might have played since beta? Fuck off much mb?

As any great means to counter something. Does nothing about actual issue and ruins things for honest people.

If you're honest then you have little to worry about.

I'm confident that if Riot were to implement the OPs idea, they'd make room for new phones/numbers.

If im honest... Lets see... I set up two accounts to one phones like a honest person. Like one on EUW and another on EUNE. Not that strange. Get ban on one for one reason or another - negative impact to another account... Nice... I wanna change linked phone cuz reasons - OP suggest that for that you should extort as much money as possible.

I set up different phone for every single of my pet accounts - nothing of those concerns me. At all. And thats what people will do if they plan to smurf or troll on another account. They quite possibly paying money to get that lvl 30 account. Paying a bit more for another phone wont hurt at all.

Hi Rem, I don't dispute your claim. I'm not saying implementing the above would completely eliminate the issue.

What you just described, while doable is a pain in the ass. I'd wager mist people wouldn't go through the trouble. But that's just a hunch.

And if those people want to go through that let them.

I'd bet there would be an overall reduction of the issue being discussed.

Hi Bello, Remember when some great man said that no one gonna bother with ARAM accounts?

La Belle Sauvage1 votes

You're comparing apples to oranges.

I'm not sure what you refer to. Do you mean playing Aram or making ARAM only accounts?

Also creating a second account is much less of a hassle then running to a store for a second phone.

Look, again if smurfing happens at the level a lot of people claim and Riot has a notion to try to reduce it, then I'm all for whatever they come up with.

And I agree that most preventative measures can be overcome.

But if they're a big enough hassle then I think it's reasonable to assume that smurfing would see a significant reduction.

  1. At least in NA you can keep your phone number, even if you get a new phone or a new service provider. Heck, as long as the other phone has a Nano SIM card I could swap phones right this second and it would instantly have my same number.
  2. Presumably you'd remember enough about your precious account that you would have no issues convincing Riot that yes, you actually are the owner and not some conman.

I didnt say its impossible. I said i might have reasons. Cant i?

Or might not. Who knows. And you will have to go through this procedure even though you did nothing wrong. All while person that did something wrong wont have any inconveniences at all.

Its fine as an option for additional account security. Not as mandatory practice for protection against pretty minor "offence" carried out by extremely small percentage of players.

Unlikely to implement outside of clash for a mandatory gameplay experience, as many people dont have a cell phone. Would drastically cut the playerbase.

La Belle Sauvage1 votes

Are you certain that is the case? And if you're are post your source.

That being said it's not an unreasonable potential worry. I'm sure in those cases where people don't have a phone there would be a work around.

Source is i know people who only have a house phone. Not everyone has a cell phone, especially poorer or younger folk. Cutting your playerbase wouldnt be the best of ideas.

La Belle Sauvage1 votes

Sure, I'd agree but you only know some people, just because you know some doesn't mean it's a majority.

The point is you can't state with certainty that if the implement such and idea, that Riot would lose x% of the player base.

Also, I'm quite certain if Riot had the notion to implement this they'd also make room for people who don't have a phone period. Or a house phone.

Problem is, even if 1% can no longer play, the loss is more than 1%. Their friends are more likely to leave as well, and the smaller the population the wider the skill varience in queue between players as the system tries to keep queue times reasonable leading to potentially more player loss.

You dont want to put walls between people and playing the game, especially to solve such a non issue.
