Put a waiting timer on Leaver Buster reports

I understand it's much easier to log Leaver Buster data by storing it when you agree to leave the match, but at this point I think we can all agree it's not very practical, given server status.

Just in my last game, I had a problem where my ping went from a stable 100 to 500-600, and I ended up in a reconnecting loop. I can get back into the game faster by closing the game and relaunching; otherwise I would end up attempting to reconnect forever. As this happens more and more, I might very well end up getting a warning even though I'm honestly just trying to get back into the game, which actually defies the point of Leaver Buster to begin with. Leaver Buster is supposed to keep you in the game.** If you can't remain in the game due to d/c or lag, then the idea is to do what you can to get back into the game as soon as possible.**

This would also be helpful in cases of actual ragequitting. If you leave and the damage is done, people are more inclined to just say, "To hell with it, I'll just leave! Who cares if I get reported!" Given time to cool down, they may feel more inclined to come back. I've seen many infuriated Ezreal Ezreal "mains" take off, only to come back 2 minutes later to give it their all more-so than before. I'm pretty sure that's behavior we'd like to encourage, minus the ragequit.

Even if there does come a time when servers are extremely stable and we can count on them 24/7, this is still a helpful feature to have in place as it addresses a real issue that will continue to exist.

  • tl;dr Immediate punishment is too harsh because life happens and so does lag

I agree with this sentiment myself. Just this morning I got my first ever "Leaverbuster has detected significant negative leaver/AFK activity on this account" notice. For starters, I did have my fair share of horrible matchups. One time, I started a PvP game in which I was severely outmatched in lane, forcing me to abandon the game due to both my summoner level and general lack of being prepared because of that. Last night I had a situation in vs. COM play against intermediate bots where somebody told me I sucked hard, so I basically told the guy that if it was an issue for him/her that I'd just take my leave, cut the loss and be done with it (except that I had a guilty conscience about it and returned just to check up on the game progress, ultimately managing to redeem myself by taking out the nexus for them). Most of the rest, however, was because I had a large frequency of game crash incidents that forced me to reconnect mid-game. So essentially, I could get punished for simply having one bad day after the next, which is completely unjust.

Granted, this isn't even ranked play - and it wouldn't be anyway since I'm at summoner level 17 right now. But the point is that I got this warning for almost no reason whatsoever. Worse still, I have absolutely no recourse because of a zero tolerance policy that forbids me to have the strikes against my account reversed no matter what happens. Riot could do a better job than is being done right now, and that requires a more balanced effort.

I'm sorry, I don't understand what change you are asking for.

LB does not automatically give you a strike for very short DCs. You have to be DCed or idle for something like 3-4 minutes.

Unfortunately, giving lenience for players who come back opens up an obvious way for trolls to mess with games and not get punished.

Perhaps they could allow your team to vote to forgive the leave if you return and play out the game. But the default needs to be that leaving/DCing regularly is not okay.

So by saying that disconnecting is not okay, basically anyone that has bad ping because of servers out of their control is subject to punishment?

As far as I know about Leaver Buster, when you leave a match or disconnect often enough - not just for extended periods of time, but in general - you will be subject to punishment.

That's what I'm trying to get balanced out here. There has to be some way to separate those who lag out from the trolls.

The problem is that, from the perspective of your teammates and opponents, DCing for technical reasons has the same effect as DCing purposefully -- it ruins the match. Players having serious technical issues all the time need to resolve those issues so they don't ruin matches. If they cannot or will not do so, they have to be prevented from queueing for matchmade games to keep the overall rate of disconnecting players under control.

When the League servers are having widespread issues and Loss Prevention is turned on, LeaverBuster is disabled. If you're lagging or DCing and nobody else in the match is having an issue, it's not Riot's server that is the problem. It's either your computer, your ISP, or some connection between you and Riot in the Internet. It's your responsibility to make sure your computer and your connection are stable.

With all that said, Riot has said they are working on detecting intentional ragequits or rage-AFKs and punishing those differently or more harshly than other leaves.
