It stops projectiles.

According to the game code, a projectile is anything with a particle effect and a travel time. Doesn't matter what that particle is, if it starts from point A, and then goes to point B, it's a projectile.

What if the particle is a champion? Kalista

To be honest im surprised it doesn't execute them

A champion is a different object in the code.

I believe that at one point when making Shaco's rework, his ult would turn him into a projectile. One of the playtesters managed to windwall Shaco and he was deleted from the game

My point is that the riot team coded these abilities into the game, what went through their head to call them projectiles when they clearly aren't?

ModWulf Helhammer19 votes

Because they are?

I defined what a projectile is. That's Riot's standard.

Just like "jumps" still are coded as dashes, projectiles are a basic element of the game and have a particular definition and behavior pattern.

And is the game set in real life?

Don't apply real world physics to a game.

SugeMinPikk7 votes

Why are you trying to make a "logic" argument in a video game where people use instant transmission, summon flames out of midair, fire bus-sized arrows with zero air resistance and zero mass, hover in the air, and turn into fucking dragons?

If we apply "logic" to Ashe's ult, then she'd have to fire it straight up in the air and turn it into a ground AoE like Xerath ult.

JavelinJoe1 votes

Normally I would say it is somewhat acceptable since it is way easier to code an all encompassing solution (like if ability starts from point A then moves to point B, or if the ability covers the distance between point A and point B). With so many different abilities, it would take a lot of time off their hands to just do it like this.

But then you get shit like this where Velkoz has 3(4) unique interactions with Yasuo's windwall (Q is blocked, W is stopped but what is already placed will still work, E is blocked but will still detonate because of a possible bug, and his ult is not effected at all). This clearly shows some level of micromanaging and not just some overall rule scheme (like if (isProjectile == true){ blocked = true;}).

ModWulf Helhammer4 votes

Some of those may be bugs, yes, but for Vel'Koz's ult, it isn't blocked because it isn't a projectile.

There is no travel time for LFDR. It damages everything caught in its range at the same time. That's something classified as a laser. Other examples (that I remember off the top of my head) are Lux Ult and Xerath Q

and also Lucian's Q right?

Well not really, since there are dashes, knockbacks, and "minions". In particular, Sion's E through minion, spooky ghosts, and Mist Walkers jumping from Yorick's E. Wind wall also blocks things like Graves autos and Swain Q, which are both instantaneous. There's also things like Fizz's ult or Orianna's balls that get stopped but don't disappear, and also Aurelion Sol's stars that go through Wind Wall.

This doesn't necessarily mean Yasuo is broken/overpowered/whatever, but over the years the logic around Wind Wall has been becoming more and more confusing.

Funnily enough graves' autos can be dodged. They travel very fast but they can be evaded, I've done it once myself. There's also a post about this "https://www.reddit.com/r/leagueoflegends/comments/41s5ql/can_you_dodge_a_graves_aa_with_flash/"

Yeah and that's what are people complaining about , why it can stop all projectiles ? why doesn't it stops like only cc abilities for example or only ranged basic attacks or only non-ultimate projectile abilities , at least it can get a nerf that doesn't let ultimates be stopped by a single wind wall

ModWulf Helhammer1 votes

Can you give me a reason why it shouldn't?

Can you give me a reason why it shouldn't?

It's simply , a basic ability stopping an Ultimate , which isn't balanced , I understand blocking basic abilities , but why the heck it stops Ornn Ult ? one of the best parts in the game is fun when you get in the mode and lore into the game , when Zed presses R , I get afraid or something because death awaits me , or when Vi punches me I feel like I really got punched especially when she comes from somewhere with no vision , but then here A Yasuo basic ability blocks an ULTIMATE ability , Ornn's Ult is one of the scariest ultimates in the game , when that kind of moster or dimigod or idk whats that comes and make that voice , it's really terrifying ! but guess what ? Yasuo stops it by using some Air coming out of a sword lol , it shouldn't be this way , the game should keep the lore stuff into the game a little bit

The game is full of basic abilities stopping ultimates. Yasuo's W isn't even the only intercept.

Disulfiram2 votes

It is though the only one that can protect an entire team, without any charge up time, by flat out cancelling multiple enemy ultimates. Personally I'd be happy if at least the WindWall was cancelled by the first ultimate it blocked, so that he can't just cut a whole team out of the fight with 1 base spell only.

Mmmm on a second thought, scratch that: I'd be happy if WindWall was removed from the game and replaced with an actual base spell, instead of being a second ultimate in a base spell's clothing.

It is not the only one. Have you never seen Soraka interrupt an ulting Fiddlesticks or Karthus (or both at the same time; wow that'd be satisfying to pull off)? Ultimate spells are given power through higher damage, better CC, longer range, etc., not through lack of counterplay.

Those are the only two intercepts, but not nearly the only basic abilities that can stop ultimates. Anything that interrupts can stop a channeled ult, spellshields can block an ult, and so on. Ults are not privileged.

Uhm sorry you are wrong , you are completely mistaken , it's not a bad thing to defend your champion but you are using the wrong method since when shields can block the cc that is coming from that basic ability ? besides that windwall can stay there for seconds , shields can't stay like what and block everything including cc , sorry but can you know , your argument is just wrong

And, again, you can interrupt channeled ults with a variety of non-ult abilities, projectile ults (even point-and-click ones) can often be negated with untargetability, and so on. Yasuo's W is not the only basic ability that affects ults.

Just because something is an ult doesn't mean it's 100% guaranteed to do exactly what you want it to do with no counterplay. Cry that I'm "just wrong" all you want, but anyone who insists on unloading their projectile-based kit into an intercept and hoping that it somehow gets through this time will be disappointed.

Gameplay over thematics. If something behaves as a projectile, it is blocked by Yasuo's wind wall. If it behaves as a ground AoE (e.g. Xerath R), then it is not blocked by Yasuo's wind wall.

windwalk blocks darius apprehend dude. its not a projectile if it never leaves his hands right?

the balance is terrible, worlds only a few champs are picked about half never are, in dota 2 almost all heroes are picked in TI.

why? because balance, league is wombo combos and cheese, dota 2 is strategy.

It stops her root and shield though I believe (not sure about the shield) which are projectiles are they not?

DuskDaUmbreon4 votes

You see, though, that's only a valid argument as a meme.

It makes no sense as a joke, because how the hell would some wind stop a ram?

However, then you have to actually realize that that all needs to happen for consistency. Every single one of those is a projectile, because that's the definition of a projectile.

It's something we laugh at, sure, but it's not something that's going to be considered for that unless balance matters there.

You realize that's just how the game is coded right? For example, Tristana W can not go over Veigar stun. Because it's coded as a dash. Now i wish that wasn't the case, and they should 1, change the animation, or 2, re-code it to be an actual jump... But Riot won't do anything of that sort.

" Because the game is too old and can't introduce new coding into the engine ". Certain things should be re-coded, and have their OWN thing. But they claim they can't do that... For whatever reason.

Yep. Anything that applies it's damage instantaneously over it's entire area (which I believe is define as a laser) is not blocked.

Xerath's Q also falls under that definition.
