Do Mages have subcategories? Should they?

There's been a bit of talk regarding fighters, and how since it's such a broad category, there are different types of fighters. Juggernauts, Bruisers, and Light Fighters.

But what about mages?

Some are single target, while others are aoe. We have mobile and immobile types. Burst and sustained. Utility, and not so much utility.

Turns out there's already a list for them:

  • Burst mages focus the most heavily on laying down direct damage, often sacrificing reach or utility in their ability sets. The most kill-focused of all mages, burst mages often use whatever crowd control they have to set up kills for themselves, and less frequently in the service of their team.

  • DPS or DoT mages are also damage-focused, but their damage tends to be more spread out over time via abilities that apply lesser amounts of damage multiple times over. In general, DPS mages are more short-ranged than other mages, but also possess effects inaccessible to most other mages, such as self-healing, and can shift from target to target far more easily.

  • Poke mages possess greater range than other mages, though this often comes at a cost in increased squishiness. Typically, a poke mage will hang back as far as their spell ranges allow them, entering lower ranges only when absolutely necessary, and excel at wearing down opponents on the enemy team before combat, though they also tend to have inferior direct combat capabilities.

  • Utility mages possess high amounts of crowd control and less conventional means of laying down power, such as the ability to shield themselves or allies or create terrain. Utility mages tend to be the least kill-focused mages, often lacking in damage relative to their other counterparts, and most often focus on controlling the battlefield instead of aggressively pursuing kills.

Should something be done to make them more distinctive?

I would call them Warlocks (Damage Focused/Ranged Assassins) and Mage (Control Focused/Offensive Support).

Warlocks: Cassiopeia Malzahar Swain Veigar

Mages: Anivia Orianna Lissandra Zyra

To me, as a mage main, it seems pretty distinctive as is.

It's hard to take you seriously when your name is literally "Go fuck yourself"

OT: Considering Xerath is somehow a secondary assassin, yes. I think changes to the subcategories need to be made

all my mains are things that piss people off because they think they lack counterplay (garen skarner shyvana udyr veigar ect) so id say "skill wins games period - darius" and they would go "go fuck yourself" so thats why its that ^^

Their actualy already a fell categories that are used in discussion:

  • Controle mages (mages with a lot of zoning power): Viktor Orianna Anivia

The problem with this category is that is doesn't really forfill the classic naming of mages:

  • Burst
  • DPS
  • Poke
  • Utility

Because most mages have a combination of the point above in their kit. But that's not the biggest issue. Their are items that can maybe any mages into a controle mage like item 3116. So it's doesn't matter what category you provide them. Their will always been a discussion over it.

Do Mages have subcategories? Should they?

They do, but a lot of there variants can just be explained with the secondary class.

Malzahar burst mages focused on single-target DPS are generally listed as mage/assassin. Ryze DPS and Tanky DPS mages as mage/fighter. Morgana High utility mages as mage/support. Ziggs And then poke/zonning mages are just mages.

Should something be done to make them more distinctive?

Totally. Riot should make the primary/secondary class really easy to access and see. It used to be, then they hid it for whatever reason. Now you have to cycle through the 6 classes to see which 2 any given champion lands in on this site.

Other sites are considerably more informative on fairly basic things to understand a champion's strengths/weaknesses/play style like this. I mean - this site also doesn't list the AA range of champions (which is stupidly important and costs a considerable amount of kit-budget power). Ability cooldowns, AoE, animation times also aren't present.
