@riot Do subclasses still exist?

Been a while since I've played this game but i used to exclusively play artillery mages. Riot in the past had outlined a philosophy that champions should fit in a subclass. Some of the ones i had recalled were artillery mage, battle mage, etc. One of the notable points of this philosophy was that each class was to have its strengths and weaknesses in order to create a balanced game play. Perhaps my skill has depreciated, however did this philosophy get thrown out? a lot of current meta champions seem to fit multiple subclasses riot had defined in the past, eliminating many of their weaknesses.

It's been about 2 years since classes/subclasses has been touched on. I also made a post wondering about it and it did not pick up any traction, but I would very much like to know where Riot is on the whole discussion.

Subclasses exist, they have said that champions are able to dip into the strengths and weaknesses of other subclasses (not their exact words but they said something very similar). Like ADCs getting hard CC in their kits or having some of them be self reliant. It creates more interesting characters that way instead of pidgeonholding champions into having very strict rules. It's why in the past you would only pick the best performing tank if he was available over the rest. Their kits are so similar and interchangeable that you just pick whoever is strongest at the moment. ADCs also felt insanely similar from each other for quite a while.
