Misconception about rank

This is something i thought about for a while and numerically it doesnt make sense. Why do people always say gold and plat are bad players? They are in the top 12% of players in a game where millions upon millions of players play each day and yet everyone keeps saying they are bad. That numerically doesn't make sense. If you are in the top 12% of players, then that means you are better than 88% of players. A quick google search nets that during peak hours league has 67 million players playing this game at any one given time. That means (based off of that 67million number) that your better than 58,960,000 players! You should be proud of yourselves gold and plat players. I dont mean be arrogant, because your far from the best, but you are pretty dang good at this game if you hit that point and you should be proud. Dont constantly demean yourself or let others make you actually believe your bad, statistically, your not. Numbers dont lie. People do.

On one hand you can say better then avg, on the other you can say its relative. Then one can see themselves messing up constantly and making bad decisions, in this way one might believe they are bad cause they wont accept it aspiring to do better.

I used to think exactly like this a couple seasons ago when I worshipped gold+ players as unbeatable gods. It never made sense to me why players above average weren’t considered high elo. By definition it makes sense.

But after having climbed and seen the boosted shit platinum and even some diamond players tend to do I’m no longer inclined towards that train of thought. Plus I definitely don’t consider myself to be all that great at the game, and without trying to sound too cocky I am definitely above the skill level of a gold player, and probably most platinum players.

But gold/platinum players are indeed above average and had to put in work to get there, and I agree with the sentiment that gold+ players should be proud— that’s why they get the victorious skins, too. It’s an accomplishment for sure and should probably be more celebrated. :p

Heh. I just had a Plat account Orianna Int down mid in a Silver game. She earned it?

In my opinion, the difference between Silver and Plat is this right now:

  • Luck. Your losses in Silver are more influenced by teammates than individual awareness/performance. You have to get past people with poor performance to actually have performance be a factor in your evaluation.

  • Team Synergy comprehension. Silver randomizes teams. Plat will create a team that works together as a strong lock, if everyone plays their role.

  • A marginal difference in mechanical skill. I say marginal, because Silver/Gold really aren't that bad of players right now. They've had a lot of years to practice, and are not what Silver used to be. They are just impulsive, poor team players, and easy to provoke.

Eh, I agree on the Mechanical skill, Luck is a factor in both elo's, tilting is more prevelent in lower elo's, and the Team Synergy comprehension doesn't exist anywhere, because there is waay too many OTP's.

Tldr; the only team synergy in any elo is support+adc synergy & maybe a knock up for a Yasuo (more likely in lower elo's, since it doesn't make a huge difference if the silver toplaner picks malphite or fiora/riven/jax/etc, since it's more likely they'll perform better on the said malphite, while in plat+ elo's if you have a Riven OTP, and put him on Malphite, there's quite good chances that the Riven OTP will perform far worse since people know how to exploit Malphite's laning phase/pre-teamfighting while riven doesn't have any of those exploits for example.)

RARELY you will get a good comp, that is literaly oriented around being OK in laning, good for sieging, etc. (excluding challenger/master elo since I've only played a handful of games with those types of players at my prime)

Ever pick Morgana and Xerath on the same team? Or Morg/Anivia? Perma CC. Aoe bomber teams?

I just looked up your op.gg... what a load of crap xD Assuming you mean the Orianna who went 5/13, right? She’s silver 4. Not platinum.

Anyway, as much as I’m sure you’d like to believe it’s luck, have to disagree. Luck is going to have some sort of influence no matter what rank you’re in. Saw a diamond Lucian tilt out and run it down after taking half his health bar in nami poke from me at level one because he had no pressure after his Morgana missed Q and didn’t back off like he should have. He didn’t understand or respect the lane and lost a trade for it and subsequently tilted out. People like that are at every elo.

I’d say mechanical skill, map awareness, macro, rotations, wave management, and priority are things platinum players do or do better compared to silver/gold players. Do they do it perfectly? Hell no. That’s why they aren’t a higher rank. But I’d say generally all of those are things platinum players have a better grasp of.

Look at her past seasons....... She has Victorious Orianna, so she at least was gold last season, and claimed to be Plat. And I've had quite a few Ex plats in games (usually Plat IV losers with Gold MMRs). I didn't check for certain, But I know she got Gold. And then Inted in Silver 4.

Luck has far more influence when people play poorly than when they play well. Ofc there's always luck. It's just a smaller part of the equation the higher you go.

I'd argue the opposite and that luck has more influence the higher you go because you can't solo carry as easily.

It's rather simple really.

Even though gold-plat are better then 88% of the playerbase, doesn't mean their gameplay isn't hugely flawed. For example, you couldn't even compare the skill gap between D5 & D3 2 seasons ago. Like d5 players would legit not even know the rotations. While in d3, the game is smoothe, and the throws/getting picked off were really rare because the awarness was on a whole different level.

And, if you are lets say plat, go play vs Silver's/Gold's and you will see a huge discrepancy (maybe not this season, but before there were a lot of discrepancies & differences).

Hence, when I used to be D3, I considered D5 players bad. Because they just wouldn't belong in the games if you know what i mean. Like, you would literally lose the game based on who had more D5 players on their team. (Most of the time, not always, sometimes they just had a struggle & fell down from higher ranks so they play good, but the usual norm was D5's at the time, couldn't even manage waves properly). Specificaly remember a game, where I was playing mid against Talon, and he allowed me to perma freeze on him. He didnt break the freeze using his W for 4 minutes.

Going from bronze up to plat only requires learning the game as an individual and it's hard to forget those skills and difficult to empathize with people who haven't learned them yet.

A Silver player sees a Bronze player not know how to cs and it's hard to not say "wow you're dumb you haven't practiced that yet" A Gold player sees a Silver fail to cs under turret and goes "wow you're dumb if you don't know it's 2 shots + auto for melee and 1 shot + 2 autos for a ranged" A Plat players sees a Gold lose a trade and goes "wow you're dumb if you didn't know a 4 minion disadvantage will make your level 2 trade go bad"

All of these knowledge points feel like ephemeral skills before you know them and basic facts once they're learned. When you're a low-skill player, pulling off a good lane phase looks like magic while to a high-skill player it's a basic, practiced sequence (fun fact: card tricks feel pretty much the same between an audience member and the performer)

Soon as I hit Gold 4 I'm giving up league. That simple. I will have proven I'm better than most players right there and will have nothing left to prove. I'll never see Diamond+ and I'm ok with that.
