The current ranking system

I was thinking about it, and I couldn't really come up with anything on my own other than it speeds up climbing for better players. As in, why people start in silver-ish instead of just starting from the bottom? Curious if anyone actually knows the good reasoning behind this method, because at face value it seems silly to have brand new players go against players with years of experience.
