Things you wish you knew about your role

I saw an enemy Ryze ulting to my location and thought nothing of it... til he teleported an already ulting AP Nunu and blew 3 of us to kingdom come. Made me start thinking about this topic, so I figured I would start it and maybe have a good chat with some folks.

Basically, what are some things about the role you chose to main... that you wish you had a heads up from friends or guides before solidifying yourself to it. Like had you known this from the get go, your experience in that role would have probably been way better than it was before you learned it. I imagine it can be anything, but I am hoping this is a more informative rather than a complaint post. I'll start off with some examples as someone maining jungler:

  1. Probably the biggest one for me - Gank at level 2. When you take red or blue, for a brief period you are 1 level ahead and have 1 extra skill the enemy laners do not. I cant tell you how many first bloods and flashes I have taken since doing this.

  2. Jungling isn't about killing camps, its putting pressure on the enemy while clearing them. I learned this when I supported before going jungle, you have a lot more time on your hands to look at the map than your team. Plan where you are going, be sure you can succeed, and let your team know if you see something they might not... most of the time you do.

  3. It's ok to abandon a lane. I am sure someone is going to get rowdy over this one, but it's true. If you have died to Vayne in bot 8 times... I dont want to be ANYWHERE near that non sense unless she gets caught out. Put your resources toward dragon, herald, or a lane that just needs a tiny bit more help.

TL;DR - Things you wish you knew that make you a better player now, go!

After lvl 6, Support becomes the team’s 2nd Jungle. Of course there are exceptions (your AD is fed and enemy team has a Zed), but in general, you should be trying to help make picks/deny vision/secure objectives with your JG after you learn your ultimate

It's ok to abandon a lane.

Yep. Very much okay to outright ignore a lane even if it wasn't you that was dying to the enemy. Like when a Heim player feeds a Talon 12 kills in 15 minutes and then complains about you not ganking despite the fact that you've shown up to midlane five times and every time you did Talon ran away before anything could happen.

That was actually a running theme that match, with the enemy warding like crazy and my team never attempting to deward, and thus successful ganks ending in takedowns being few and far between.

That Heim kept pushing his lane in so hard under Talon's tower it was like he was practicing architectural proctology, then complaining about a lack of ganks. Not every jungler can successfully tower-dive in a gank, and yet everyone blames JUNGLE when they're the ones feeding.

Mid:

  1. Sometimes its ok to roam even as a non-roaming champion. Use your level and number advantage and kill that ADC with a bounty. Don't blindly follow that enemy Zed in an unwarded river, however
  2. Farm is more important than kills. Staying alive is more important than farm
  3. That lvl2 ganks are easily countered if you expect them(still its good jungle Camille is no longer a thing)
  4. Pink ward is not there to detect enemy ganks, it is there to give your jungler a 100% safe way to gank.

All roles - warding is OP. Ward the river. Ward the enemy jungle. Ward EVERYWHERE and pick off squishies that don't expect you to ward.

Top Lane

Basic stuff like...

The number of turret hits it takes before I can last hit a minion (generally 2 for the melee and 1 for casters), really helps out with farming under turret as well as freezing lane.

That top can, at any time, become a 2v1 or 3v1; so, extending past river is a no go unless the enemy laner is dead and I'm at or near full resources OR my jungle is nearby and willing to help.

Fruit plants in river help a lot with sustain.

The best place to put a red ward is near where Herald spawns so not only do you know if the enemies are going for it and when, but also if they have vision on it AND it can alert both your lane AND mid lane of approaching enemies since it's at the center of the river AND the ward alerts your team when the enemy is going after scuttle in that area for a possibly easy kill with the bonus of scuttle.

The best place for yellow wards is at the nearest enemy buff while it's still alive; if the enemy kills it, you'll know exactly when it's back up again. Alternatively, you and an ally or more can roam down and take it and maybe even kill the enemy jungle.

Top lane often gains far more experience and gold simply by farming waves than from pursuing kills. Level 16-18 is ridiculously fast and easy to achieve as long as you play it safe in top.

Teleport is usually best used for returning to your own lane UNLESS you can help secure guaranteed kills in bot lane (plural) and then help with drake.

As a jungle main, I wish I knew i was going to get all the blame when someone dies 1 vs 1.

I would probably have focused on something else, altough jungle fits my play style. I can't play any lane because i play way to aggro and can't stand people who just sit at tower so i force too much. As a jungle main when i play mid versus something like Velkoz or other squiscy targets it frustrates me when my jungler doesn't come and dive them level 2.

So, to all junglers that don't know it, please (if you can execute it properly) tower dive immobile champs that play ultra safe. Don't ignore it, diving is super powerful and gets you ahead better than a gank setted up at your towers.
