Since the removal of the shields on Ryze.

Ryze's play rate went from 6.88% to 3.75% in the mid lane with consistent downward trend. Clearly something went horribly wrong here. Players are jumping ship.

For top lane it went from 8% to 2.65%.

Clearly something bad happened when almost everyone finds that he is not worth playing.

I liked the outplay potential on ryze... now he just has none. Also, bring back zhonya's ult!

all the complexity of ryze was replaced with this "ryze for kids" ryze so yeah no one is gonna play something that doesn't have an interesting gameplay loop.

He is still popular in high elo. I watched Nemesis play him on stream, he does a bunch of damage. I think he is just under appreciated. Reworked Urgot was ignored for a year, and out of nowhere started to define the meta. Karma is the current champ doing this.

Also, Akali just had her shroud perma invisiblity removed finally. Showmaker(LCK player) just popped off recently with her. Despite all the nerfs, players are still improving with the champion.

Ryze is in an ok place, people are just jumping ship to Corki or other flavour of the month picks.

urgot also got a very large buff to his W

Karma too got a minor buff. Both champ however were nerfed, yet remained defining the meta. Sometimes things don't immediately take over the meta. No player played Ryze in S5, then Faker showed how broken he was, despite not one other player being capable of playing him. He wasn't weak prior to Faker picking him up. People just didn't understand his strength.

just because people arent playing your champ u think its wrong ? ryze is button mash champ anywho , maybe people have better champs to play.

Theorex1 votes

A button mash champion. Right, because Sona isn't a button mash champion. Because Yasuo isn't a button mash champion. Wanna know the things that they all have in common? Low CS spells. Oh wait, look at that someone is going to say "Well you have to use the skills at the right times, and have the right targets for Yasuo!" Because somehow they doesn't apply to Ryze either? Because Ryze's E reachs the whole map with its 500 bounce range.

I don't think it is wrong for a champion to have a low play rate, but this is a massive drop in play rate. Which is an indication that something functionally is wrong with the champion. Its not like he was completely reworked. 90% of his kit functions the exact same.

dude champ play rate changes from meta to meta, sometimes drastically . Its not just ryze experiencing low play rate.

There are over 140 champions. Any playrate of 1% or more is already "Over their fair share" in a balanced world. Seeing his play rate drop that much doesn't mean there's a problem with him necessarily.

In this case it means they FIXED a problem with him, where he was a bit stronger than intended, and more people than usual had picked him up. After the problem was "fixed"(They should have reverted giving him Waveclear IMO, not taken his shield, but whatever.) the extra players dropped him again and his playrate is going back down to a more regular level.

He's just not ryze anymore. The skill expression he used to have in most matchups is now exchanged with being able to burst harder.

WoonStruck1 votes

He can't auto-win trades anymore because he doesn't have his instant point-click W and a shield.

That's why people jumped ship. He's not disgusting to play against anymore. He's closer to being balanced.

The Ecdysiast1 votes

They took away all of the reward for learning his combos. Now he's a little bit "easier", but less worth playing.

Ye right, he might burst harder squishies but if he fails to do so theres no way back, he dies, little to no outplay potential, now you are just a teamfight machine that hopes to reach the lategame and have someone peel for you because your EW is still short ranged and using EW means losing spell flux. Literally wouldnt mind if they nerfed his damage but gave him some defensive mechanisms or at least nerfed a bit his damage and gave him better E range and E spread damage back, but to be honest riot won't ever care, they almost killed him in the proplay (veeeeeery situational pick, like hes having no more than 4-5% presence now) which was their intention. And also hes nowhere near easier for other players since he cant now misposition, its almost certain death whereas the previous one could stand a chance to escape.

I never really saw him as needing shields. He's always been the kind of champion that becomes innately tanky just buy stacking a bunch of mana into Frozen Heart and a RoA just because his passive let's him benefit more from JUST the stats.

Theorex1 votes

Frozen heart and RoA don't really make him tanky. It makes him take .5 seconds longer to die. He went from doing 80% of the current damage he does, but the time to kill him was 3.5 seconds. To doing 100% damage that he currently does, but 1.2 seconds for how long it takes him to die.

I mean you still get Archangel's Staff active to help you fight. His removal of his passive shields just enforces players to build Tear -> Archangel's and use the active when needed and not to just blatantly have a shield because the player E Q E W'd. Which you cannot deny that it doesn't allow much room to trade as the opposing player because Ryze will already be out of range by the time you want to exchange damage and therefore the passive shield isn't entirely needed.

Theorex1 votes

You are saying that the enemy isn't doing anything in that time frame that Ryze is casting Q E W Q E Q. That is how many spells it takes to full to zero someone in the late game. Which takes around 2-3 seconds. He has short ranges. He is close enough for Fizz to dash on. That is how close he is when he is throwing out his spells.

In terms of poke, again. He is close enough for Fizz to get a dash off. If he is getting positive trades, that is because the enemy made a mistake.

When playing against Ryze correctly, you will break that shield and kill him very easily. Irelia did it super easily even after the passive nerf. Renekton did it easily. Azir/Anivia were great at screw Ryze up. Ryze was EXTREMELY good into popular champions like Yasuo, Talon, Zed, Ori, Ahri, etc. And was weak to non popular champions.
