A few tips for struggling Mordekaiser players

Hey there. Recently there have been a ton of Mordekaiser threads popping up like mushrooms after an unusually humid autumn, and I thought I'd try and help out some of 'em since a lot are just complaining about their lack of success on the champion.

Now, Mordekaiser is not perfect, far from it, but you can make him work. He could use a few buffs and QoL changes, or you know, a bloody VGU but for the moment we have to make due with what we got.

But I'm digressing, here are a few quick tips on playing Mordekaiser in this meta.

  1. Run him Mid over Top Top lane Morde is just asking to get camped and the moment you're behind you're a walking 300 gold bag for the enemy Jungler. And once the enemy has a lead you can't even farm since you need to be all the way up in the enemy minion wave and have no CC to actually escape engages.

Mid lane Mordekaiser has an inherent range disadvantage BUT he can easily shrug off Poke from Mages and Assassins since they are combo reliant and don't go for heavy trades like fighters. Start W, get resolve secondary with Chrysalsis and you're all set. In though matchups, or those I just refuse to interact in I even start a Ruby crystal and end up with 810 HP, too much for most champions to handle.

  1. Hybrid Bruiser builds are out of flavor, go FULL AP with a twist I used to play Mordekaiser with item 3053 and item 3146 but after the AP item changes there's no need for that. Your first THREE items provide you with 900 bloody HP. That's right, rush these three in this order and you're gucci item 3116 item 3151 item 3165

Round your build off with item 3089 and item 3135 and you can literally one shot people with ONE Ultimate. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E0PnCHMOom0

  1. Poach Jungle camps for insane healing At level 5 you can easily clear Jungle camps, either getting your own Jungler's chickens or the enemy's wolves and raptors. You even end up with MORE HP than you actually started.

  2. Abuse Mage's weak tower last hitting with your constant Push Mordekaiser pushes HARD You Max W and perm push the enemy lane, most mages are going to be forced to spend all their mana matching you and they suck at last hitting under tower, build up a farm lead like that.

  3. Rotations, rotations By applying a lot of pressure you open yourself up for plays around the map. Get drake whenever you can to guarantee one to two towers, by sending it down the lane with most allies and minions. Try focusing on Bot with it and help your jungler out in ganks.

  4. Counterpick battlemages and Assassins Mordekaiser counters anything short ranged and reliant on burst Ekko Katarina Ryze Vladimir Talon Taliyah Zed Fizz Yasuo Diana Lissandra Syndra

  5. Avoid counter picks Champions who have efficient ways of keeping Morde at an arms length, deny him a clone or just control him in team fights are to be avoided Azir Anivia Cassiopeia come to mind

  6. You are NOT a true frontliner Mordekaiser, like any Juggernaut does not want to take the full brunt of an engagement but prefers what I dubbed the "Mid-Line" He follows up on his fighters/tanks and shreds the enemy opposition while also becoming extremely durable in the process Thats why you run him mid and hope your top doesn't run bloody teemo or quinn

  7. Play to your strengths and avoid taking unnecessary risks Mordekaiser snowballs extremely hard but also sucks when behind, so you shouldn't risk your success based on getting a single kill by flashing into 5 people. Try farming up as a reliable way of income and only go for fights you are SURE to win, you can actually 1v2 easily depending on both the enemies you're facing. Rule of thumb; go for the weaker target who's easier to kill first so you can turn that 1v2 into a 2v1

  8. Practice makes perfect Morde scales well with the enemy's stupidity but he scales harder with YOUR own mastery over the champion, know your matchups, the game flow and item spikes and you'll be sure to win more than you lose.

Just a neat lil' way of spreading the word of good ol' Morde

I love when people are so passionate about their main! What keystone would you recommend?

Malicious Metal7 votes

Currently Summon Aery is your go to Keystone mastery. It adds significant chips of damage to your Ultimate proc as well as giving you some extra poke with every stray spell that hits your foes.

PLUS it actually works on allies too. One W applies it three times, adding up to significant damage shielded.

Once they actually buff Phase Rush it might be worth taking again since Morde loved the old Stormraider's Surge.

Weird off meta picks are Fleet footwork, which is my go to rune for Junglekaiser.

Child of the Pit1 votes

Do you think Conqueror is worth taking in Morde?

Malicious Metal2 votes

Well, as outlined further below, there is a bug(?) with it that effectively cuts your shield gain by 20% since you don't generate Iron Man off' the true damage you deal.

Child of the Pit1 votes

Oh thats preety dumb... Jesus just imagine it would work, the True damage ult would shred everything to pieces

Wait.. I thought the secret to being a Morde main was to draw a pentagram on the floor, light candles, and sacrifice a goat while listening to Black Sabbath. Have I been doing it wrong this whole time?

Malicious Metal3 votes

Well, these are tips for struggling Mordekaiser players, you sir do not need any advice. Carry on.

The pentagram must be made in the Salt of Yasou mains

Verxint1 votes

I usually gather the tears of Yasuo, Riven, and Vayne mains, boil the water, and gather the precipitated salt to use for my pentagram. I suspect I need a specific ratio to optimize metal output.

You suspect incorrectly, the Tears of Players who believe (falsely) they are good is the prerequisite material. In addition to Talow candles for a purifying agent

Mains of those three champions just happen to meet those criteria.

I'm actually doing extremely well with Mordekaiser+Taric with a duo friend at bottom, I find it extremely efficient at carrying and scales hard. Obviously my partner is there to cover up literally every weakness I have as Morde (shields, heals, CC, anti-burst).

Lifedeather2 votes

May I ask what is your exact runes that you take? I know the keystone but I would also like to know about the secondary rune options and secondary tree runes as well.

Malicious Metal1 votes

For sorcery go: Nullifying Orb-Celerity-Gathering Storm Resolve: Chrysallis and Bone Plating

Gives you a lot of early bulk and ways to survive lane while providing you with a lot of scaling damage PLUS the MS is invaluable on an immobile champion like good ol' Morde.

Adinos Spear1 votes

Nice snap shot of the state of play for the Mord players brother :) Haven't seen any thoughts yet on conquerer potentially for Mord? Whaddaya think?[darius-angry]

Malicious Metal3 votes

Conquer seems good on paper BUT it actually screws with your shield gain since it specifies MAGIC DAMAGE dealt by your abilities. Meaning that you lose out on 20% shielding because of the true damage conversion.

ryali and tormet if ur laner playing passive or safe. if your fed go with ryali and trinity force (start with sheen).

Isn't Vaatu already dark or am I missing something?

SociopathFriend1 votes

Also something that may or may not be relevant- since MM mentioned taking Morde mid- another reason I think that might be better is it seems several top champions embrace a similar style of the aggressive face-tank-then-live style: Aatrox Akali DrMundo Trundle Tryndamere Vladimir Warwick Except all of them have more mobility/crowd control than Mordekaiser does- which means if they start getting a lead on you it will be quite hard to pull back without assistance.

If you've ever been a Mordekaiser behind an Aatrox or Tryndamere- I pretty genuinely don't really know how you can come back from that.

Malicious Metal2 votes

Back when I still played top lane I dreaded these kinds of mobile AA heavy champions. Jax, Trynd and Aatrox are hell to deal with for Morde.

SociopathFriend1 votes

Yeah, I once roamed a bit to help our Jungler because they were encountering the enemy Jungler. The Aatrox got level 3 first, all-inned me, killed me; and from then on I was basically just walking gold and experience to him. That was not a pretty game.

I'd rather face any given mage mid-lane then do that again.

Glorious morde post, as expected malicious

I was struggling for awhile. Thanks

LOSINGISMYPRIDE1 votes

Is the keystone conqueror good on morde ? Since you rely pretty much on only two ability i dont see much case where you can auto attack in the long term ? I mostly see only stickyness and dash like akali or cc to proc much time the damage . Wht your insight into this .

LOSINGISMYPRIDE1 votes

I just thought about it but wouldnt you get higher shield witht he conqueror rune in long term fight since your ability would deal 20 % converted magic damage to true damage .

Malicious Metal1 votes

As already stated in this thread there's a weird interaction with the rune where you don't gain shield for the true damage portion of your ability damage since Iron man specifies MAGIC damage.

LOSINGISMYPRIDE1 votes

I just played a game earlier with morde and im not really sure if its a bug but did it happen to you to have a permanent shield at the start of the game who not decay without even using any ability ?

Malicious Metal1 votes

You start with Iron Man at 25% capacity since you spawn with a full shield bar and it can't decay below that threshold if not damaged.

LOSINGISMYPRIDE1 votes

kk thx alot .

Malicious Metal1 votes

No problem.

Hey thanks for the tips man. Great advice! Like that you dont focus solely on "build these items ftw hurr durr" [slayer-pantheon-thumbs]

I Main Swain1 votes

one thing i had a lot of success with (and disclaimer its been a few months since the last time i spammed mord and im also low elo so stupidity is something you can specifically count on) going top lane and pushing/poking HARD, like really hard. nearly without fail around level 3-5 the enemy laner would be low and tower farming, their jungler would come for a gank and they would come out to help them get the kill and i would instead kill the top laner almost immediately and about 50% of the time kill the jungler as well or at least get them really low and get away myself.

AlienPrimate1 votes

I play him mid and ask my jungler to leave the raptors. I never actually kill them. I just walk over to them, pop my W to heal for about 30% of my hp, then walk back to lane and repeat this whenever I lose any HP. One problem I have been running into with Morde in middle lane is that it seems my lane is always 0/0/0 with me having double the cs of my enemy laner, but then they always manage to get a triple kill in some team fight and snowball out of control looking like I did absolutely nothing all game while the enemy mid carried.

ChuShoe1 votes

Just played against it and got destroyed. GG metal man.

Naomi CoffeeGoat1 votes

Didn't know people struggled with him. I just run my laners down and beat the shit out of them and even 2v1 the jungler in top lane at times.

OmarmohyThinker1 votes

Can mordekaiser still kill me with only an R while full hp?

Malicious Metal1 votes

A full build Mordekaiser R deals about 70% max Hp damage, add the 20% burn from Liandries and you get about 90% max hp over 10 seconds. It might work on squishes with an Aery proc or two, or just on heavy HP stackers with little MR

Nice guide!

Nitpick: Taliyah isn’t short-ranged or burst reliant. Her Threaded Volley reaches out to 1,000 units. Her Seismic Shove has a 900 unit range. Her Unraveled Earth reaches to 800 units. Also, while she can do burst, her win condition is to poke from range, push the wave, and roam.

FyreWall1 votes

Hey Malicious Metal, I'm a pretty new morde player, but i am constantly going positive in my matches and think i have what it takes to make him my main, but I was wondering if you would help me take that a step further by coaching me? I would really appreciate it!

Malicious Metal1 votes

Sure, what do you wanna know?

FyreWall1 votes

Will, for one, I think I have a pretty decent handle on him, but I always run into the issue if getting focused in team fights and not knowing what to do when I'm getting ganked. Do I just stay and fight most ganks, or should I run (hobble, it's Morde we're taking about) and where should I be in team fights, certainly not the front line.

Malicious Metal1 votes

Well, Mordekaiser isn't a true frontliner. You'd probably want to engage after your allied fighters/tanks and flex between going into the fray or just staying back and use W/E/R to deal damage. Common misconception is that Morde's all about his Q, when it's actually just some kind of sledgehammer for beating anyone too close to him.

During ganks it depends on who you're fighting, certain combinations are easier to actually 1v2 and win. Rule of thumb; if they're a tank and a mage you can 1v2, or anything that takes time to actually kill you.

Say a maokai and a skarner is a winnable 1v2 whereas a graves/kha and a darius aren't. It really depends on their damage output as well or your overall ability of killing them. Focus ONE guy, preferrably the squishier one, kill him and turn it int a 2v1 in your favor.

FyreWall1 votes

Oh? I never really thought of using my Q as self-defense instead of assault, I'll certainly make a note of that! I've also found that Assassins cant really do anything to me during ganks, because they die too quickly.

FyreWall1 votes

So I just had a few matches in a row where I got ganked over soon times before level six, and I've lost over 90lp. Is there anything else you can tell me that will help me against stuff like this, it was it just bad team?

Malicious Metal1 votes

Well, there's a good way of staying safe of getting ganked, which is warding one side of mid lane and putting a pink either the first or second bush. You'd try hugging the side with the wards so you know if there's an enemy jungler approaching.

Vision and knowing enemy Jungler paths also helps a lot. You should always keep the enemy's position in mind and watch where they last showed themselves.

But yeah, stuff like that happens and it sucks.

Alex h87211 votes

MM you are one of my favorite forum residents because of your enthusiasm for certain champs especially but also for the game in general.

This guide is appreciated! While a bad morde is a walking bag of gold for the enemy team, a good morde is a terror to them who they run at the sight of! Keep on truckin my friend!

Thanks for your kind words :)
