@Riot: How often do you check to ensure AR/MR resistance calculations are actually working?

In a ton of games, it feels like even if you get a decent amount of resistances, your enemies can carve through it without any anti-armor or anti-MR items. For instance, I once had a game where I got up to 250 armor, the enemy (4 physicals) had no item 3035 or item 3071 , and they just ripped through me like the armor was at 0. From that, you can understand where the idea that "armor/magic resistance is a trap" comes from.

What I want to know is if you guys actually ensure those resist calculations actually WORK AS INTENDED. I have a sneaking suspicion that some of those calculations might actually be malfunctioning.

I mean it's pretty easy to check even as a player, as all the calculations are known. It's easy to go "woah theres no way that can be right" when you're burst, but if you actually sit down and math each of the autos/abilities, everything works out as expected. I can pretty much guarantee that if there was a bug with the calculations on the whole, someone would find it pretty much immediately and there'd be plenty of posts around it, as theres lots of players with an eye for these things (not to mention replays and vods make frame by framing things pretty easy).

It's possible theres issues with specific abilities on specific champs where things might go wrong, but even that I think would be spotted relatively quick.

More likely it's just a case of not optimising effective health (e.g. buying lots of resistances but not getting health to benefit from it), or simply underestimating the dps of 4 members wailing on you.

I was JG Rumble and had item 1402 item 3020 item 3116 item 3001 item 3151 item 1057 . Didn't do jack against the enemy Elise who didn't have a Void Staff.

From the looks of it:

you had 100+ bonus Magic resist? with base stats at most 50.2 @ level 16 (not counting runes or materies) = 150 MR VERSUS the Elize had 380 bonus AP + deathcap passive bonus of 35% increase in AP, (not counting runes or materies)

your magic resist wasn't enough, especially against her

based on: http://www.matchup.gg/matchup/Rumble/Elise/JUNGLE

you have a 50% vs 70% Match up against Elise

250 Armor can be thought of as 250% effective Health against physical damage. with 3k HP, 250 Armor would mean 10.5k Physical damage would be needed to 100-0 him. I think that would be about the same if he had traded 50 Armor for 500 HP, but in that case, I would go with the HP for the extra protection against magic and true damage.

But Yeah, you probably want at least 3k health, probably more if your going to be a tank. And while 10.5k physical damage sounds like a lot, it definitely isn't when split between 4 attackers.

Also, you might want to check champion kits. Their may be Armor pen hiding in a champions kit.
