Is she OP? No. But if you're good enough to recognize illaoi as a weak champion than you can recognize the the issues for anyone that gets hit by ONE E.
Restless Slumber3 votesShe is more annoying than anything. Champions that have hard punishes for mistakes are never fun to play against, and that is why people will complain. Think of all the QQ champs here on boards; they all have ridiculous ways of punishing bad players, so there is a reason as to why people will be upset. I personally think Illaoi is a cool champion, and I don't mind playing into her unless I am playing Riven, as that matchup is way too hard for my laning mechanics on Riven. Other than that, I will agree that she is a fun champion to play against because it takes skill to play versus it.

DoTs and champion's with AA resets or multihit spells drastically hinder her ability to damage the spirit, anyone with AA resets can instakill tentacles near the spirit for the same result
She has to expend a huge portion of her mana to kill spirits early on, for mediocre damage unless you're dumb enough to let her hit you and the spirit at the same time
Illaoi does not guarantee a flash or death if she lands her hook. Illaoi can't flash hook cheese you for a kill unless you get double hit or don't dodge vessel spawns

Big Lincoln2 votesyes, Illaoi's strength is in zoning. renekton and pantheon can zone you off the wave just by existing; Illaoi has delayed attacks and E is minion blocked.
she's got awful trading potential before level 5 as well. anyone who can bully earlier than that needs to wreck her ASAP because her level 6 is where she gets actual kill potential.

Big Lincoln1 votesIf you just want to counter pick her I highly recommend Swain or Cass top. Their combination of ranged and DoT harass and Cass W disabling Illaoi's jump is a very rough time for her Rumble works well for most of the same reasons but post 6 it can be risky
Renekton and Pantheon I feel actually lose to Illaoi, especially if they don't get an early lead. Darius and Fiora are skill match ups but can shut her out of the game for much longer than Renekton will.
