Why doesn’t Morde’s W tick when alone?

Having that much power tied to a lane feels bad man

Illaoi’s power is pretty tied to lane also, but she’s a greater 2v1 threat when nesting up in a lane and pushing (morde can 2v1, but it’s very conditional on how much CC and how tanky the opponents are, and how skilled at kiting)

See what I’m saying? His power is tied to lane but unlike say, illaoi, he’s not even that “safe” in lane. Even his E is sort of lane dependent shield-generation wise. But not quite as literally as W

Its from their great idea of putting him bot.

Because Riot hates Morde /s

They don't want people playing him, so don't expect buffs/changes or even bug fixes. It would be great to not automatically die when you're out in the jungle alone away from your allies or a minion wave though. Morde is the only solo laner who needs someone to hold his hand to play.

Because of Riot's intent to shoehorn certain abilities and hidden power into his kit to make him viable botlane, such as his excessively powerful W heal and his experience passive, which forces them to remove power elsewhere. They chose to do so by making his W ally-dependent.

Even if it'd be much more satisfying to simply remove those powers and remove ally dependency altogether, riot will not do it for unknown reasons.

Cuz they wanted him to be a duo laner, at least we got them to let us use it on minions again for solo laning.

W on minion...... solved.

Because even with that limitation, it's one of the most powerful and reliable abilities in the game.

If they made it unconditional, they'd have to take power out of his kit in other places. His E is already about as watered-down as it can be while still feeling like an actual ability, and his Q is already about as unreliable as they can reasonable make it - and given it's unreliability, taking damage off would just make it feel worse.

I guess his ult could take a hit and still feel ok, but I'm not convinced it would be worth it.
