I’m not sure how an MVP system would work because people are often too focused on scores than what someone actually does in the game. Sometimes you can “feed” all game but still pull through for your team. Let me tell you a story:
I was playing Quinn ADC, I was still pretty new with her, and I wasn’t as good with her then as I am now. I don’t remember who the supports on either side were but I was against a Vayne. I counter Vayne, should be an easy lane, right? Sure, but my support (I think it might had been Leona or Malphite) was kinda just pissing in the buss all game and didn’t really do anything for me. They died a few times – my support was – what I sometimes call “feeding me to the enemy laner.” They’d go in, I’d try to engage with them and we’d both die, it happened a couple times before I basically started ignoring my Support’s engages unless the jungler came.
At any rate, Vayne gets fed and takes both first and second bot towers rather early in the game. (I think somewhere in the 14 minute mark, maybe earlier) I’m underfed and under farmed, somewhere like 0/6/3 which is already more deaths than what I normally get in any game that’s not an Aram.
Anyway, everyone goes mid except for me and their Teemo and teamfight. I figured I wasn’t much use and botlane was pushing so I pushed back while they fought. Took bot’s first tower, bot’s second tower, backed. Teemo was pushing top. Teemo was doing this all game. (I would like to point out that it was before his small kit rework) Teemo wasn’t split-pushing as effectively as me because he didn’t have my kind of clear; I was pushing twice as fast as he was. I’d go top to stop or stall him. Sometimes I’d kill him, sometimes he’s kill me, but no matter what, I’d force him to back.
I pushed top’s first tower, then second. They’d underestimate just how fed I had gotten from killing minions. But because at this point I “fed” I wasn’t worth much gold. I was worth about as much as a minion. I could freely push all game without hurting my team because killing me was not only difficult but I wasn’t worth much when they were. Since they sent one person on average, it let my team’s fights in mid turn around and win.
So they had to choose between going for the hyper damage dealing minion or winning fights in mid – they often chose mid. Despite my atrocious score, I managed to catch up to Vayne in items. I could 1v1 this 24/3 Vayne and kill her with 3/14 (or worse) score. My team never really yelled at me in the game, they never talked me down, said I was trash, etc. I think they realised whatever I was doing was working out in their favour.
I take inhib tower, I take inhib. While they fight in mid, my supers kill one of their nexus towers in the meantime. Teemo was pushing top again, stopped him. Finally, I go mid, take second mid tower, inhib, bot inhib was back, kill it. Push last nexus tower, push nexus. Win.
In the end screen, everyone was saying “gg” and “wp” and “dat comeback lol” but their Jayce was like. “Lol, Quinn was bad, she got carried.”
And I’m sitting here like “What? Seriously? /I/ was the one carried?” I’d like to think that their choice to neglect me most of the game, allowing me to farm, allowing me to push down towers, was what won us that game. Our 4v4s in mid ended up in stand stills, only the first mid towers were down without my help. I might not had had the score to show it, but I had over 300 CS, did most damage overall in the game, was full build, max level, and took down EIGHT out the TEN towers we had. (Nine if you count the tower the supers I SPAWNED destroyed.) I was equal strength to their fed as hell Vayne. Me. The ‘feeding’ ADC who was essentially a hyper-buffed super creep because I got barely any kills.
I don’t recommend feeding in any way, shape, or form. If it happens, it happens, sometimes it’s unavoidable. But you CAN feed and still make a difference if allowed. The enemy team enabled me to come back; I came back with a vengeance.
Likewise, the opposite has also happened:
I was going to go Quinn ADC, this was more recent. Might still be on my match history. Unfortunately for us, the game was unfairly stacked because we had two feeding trolls. I was Quinn against Vayne and Blitz, alone. I knew I couldn’t win lane like this so I abandoned bot to go top. (Riven went jungle, so no matter what, one lane would be forsaken. I was against Aatrox and in short, I kicked his ass. I kicked his ass so hard that the feeding trolls would go to my lane to feed him. I kicked his ass so hard that their jungler and midlanes would gank me. I kicked his ass so hard Aatrox asked me why I was playing so aggressively.
And I was, normally I am a passive laner who engages when I have a window (support or jungler coming) but I was being very aggressive and forcing him out of lane, but ALSO preventing him from backing when I could. If this were any other game, if we only had one troll instead of two. We might have been able to win. Despite Vayne’s “free lane” I could kick her ass. I could kick all their asses. I could 3vs1 and come out as the victor. Unfortunately, two trolls hinders you a bit too hard, once I died, the rest of my team would follow suit because not only was I the threat, but I was also the only reason we stayed in game for twice as long as we normally would had.
I knew we had two trolls, so I went someone I knew I was good with, someone I knew I could ‘carry’ with. I knew we were going to eventually lose, but my thought was – and I said this in all chat. “You’re going to win no matter what, but I am going to make that as hard as I can for you in order to do so.” And I like to think that I actually succeeded since they treated me like an actual threat and would gank me and so everything possible to stop me. 16/3, my death score was tied lowest in the game I had nearly as many kills as their most “fed” person when two trolls were feeding them.
Would the enemy consider me an mvp because we “didn’t win”? Who knows. It works both ways. KDA doesn’t mean everything but people in lower elos think it does.
Then the voting for yourself… I think a lot of people WOULD vote for themselves if given an option - especially in Lower elos where a lot of times people think they are a one man band, they are the best of the best, they are god incarnate at this game, and they, without a doubt ‘carried your asses to victory’ there are cases where you are the one that preformed the best or won the game for your team but in the end. It is a TEAM game; even if there is a “best player” in the end you won or lost as a team. Be that team only having three people or be that team lacking their ADCs in team fights because they are pushing objectives.
All that being said, I like the idea of the ribbons, I like the idea of being able to pick the ones you EARNED and I like the idea of not losing them. I actually earned the blue ribbon, which is one of the rarest and hardest to get. But I lost it because I continued to play the game and people no longer handed out honours. I rarely see people with ribbons and when I do I think they are either a smurf or someone who rarely plays.
You shouldn’t be “rewarded” for NOT playing the game, I’m sorry but that’s just idiotic.
