So i've been playing a lot of AD assassins mid, and I noticed that Maw gives almost everything I want. High AD, armor pen, a passive shield that stops you from getting oneshot, MR to counter mages, and another passive that gives attack speed, spellvamp, and lifesteal until out of combat when you get low (for moar low life 1v2 Zed plays of course lmao).
So isn't this a perfect combination against any AP mage? The only thing it's missing is lifesteal (for sustain) and Cdr.

Sona Ping2 votesMaw was an item that wasn't that great; people wouldn't bother to build it after they got Hexdrinker. So they just super-boosted the stats to make people buy it.
They did the same thing with Essence Reaver, nobody bought it because it wasn't that useful. I guess Riot was still attached to the idea of the item so they put 30# CDR on it, which is just crazy good, so nobody who has even a slight benefit from CDR has any reason not to get it. Riot does this a lot; stick on enough stat so it has to be good. It's how they bandaged Tahn Kench, it's how they bandaged Cassiopeia.

Brutalizer was deleted because it did everything bruisers wanted. While it's not the same case (Maw is expensive), it means that Maw is certainly a strong late game and early game item (strong early because mages will generally have difficulty against the shield early, strong late because of the other passive).
Dreadlocks1 votesUp until recently Zhonyas was really strong against AD assassins (still is) but the increase in cost and slight ap nerfs make it harder to rush. I'd say if they put Zhonyas back to where it was, Maw wouldn't feel so 1 sided.
Fat Bastard GOD1 votesMaw is just ridiculous. It literally is the AD anti-mage item. If you bring scaling MR glyphs, the MR you get is ridiculous with Maw. To me its pretty overtuned.
Sinister Anubis1 votesThe issue i have with Maw is the build path is way to easy to obtain while hourglass being the ap equivalent is really tough to get. Maw builds out of tiny pieces you can buy on each and every recall while trying to save up for a 1250 item that is only going to give you flat ap vs say hex drinker or Serrated Dirk which give decent stats. Not to mention hourglass cost 250g more and you have to use the active on your own while maw is a no skill no brainer active. Also you get 5 more MR vs the armor on hourglass. You also get no Magic pen.
