Overpowered Versus Unfun

There is a distinction that I think would be very beneficial to make clear as regards posts about champion balance: the distinction between an overpowered champion, and an unfun champion. It's extremely common to see posts calling for nerfs to champions who are statistically simply not overpowered. Some good examples are champions like Lee Sin, Zed, and LeBlanc; none of them have a win rate above 50% at any level of solo queue last I checked (Lee Sin in particular seems rather underpowered; Diamond win rate is ~46%). I know that win rates aren't everything, and there are mitigating factors like popularity and ban rates, but the simple fact (any specific examples left to the side) is that cries for nerfs often don't line up with actual champion strength. (Did you know that Volibear has a 53% win rate?)

I would like to suggest that as a community, we should be better about distinguishing between overpowered champions and unfun champions. Even champions with poor win rates can lead to play patterns that aren't enjoyable, and Riot's main job is to make the game fun. Usually, balanced champions are more fun, but the two don't always go hand in hand.

For instance, imagine a champion who crit'ed on 50% of auto-attacks against enemy champions, but also whiffed on 50% of those auto-attacks. (I know this isn't a perfect example, but I think it makes the point nicely.) Such a champion might plausibly be balanced, since on average they deal the same amount of damage as any other champion. However, that champion wouldn't be fun, since their victories and defeats would be too much determined by luck rather than skill. It wouldn't feel like either side had really "earned" their victory. (This is the whole reason the dodge mechanic was removed from the game.)

My suggestion is this: When you prepare to make a post about a champion you dislike, first try to honestly evaluate whether that champion is overpowered or simply unfun (or both), and phrase your post accordingly. An overpowered champion needs a nerf; an unfun champion needs a rework (large or small). Because while I'm pretty much just going to dismiss everything you say if you argue that Lee Sin is overpowered, I just might listen if you tell me that he's simply unfun.

By the way, a lot of my thinking about this emerged from my recent post about Nidalee; thanks to everyone who contributed to that discussion.

I think Riot has done a good job of making sure champions aren't (or, at least, don't remain) overpowered. They do a much worse job at making sure champions aren't un-fun.

Part of the problem is that they couch their balancing decisions not in terms of "how powerful this champion is" but in other things -- "counterplay", "separating good X players from great X players", "crowding out a certain role"... but don't always commit to those stated principles. Many of which are issues of fun, rather than outright power.

I feel like they used to balance around those principles, but have moved away from it more and more for fear of alienating the player base that likes stomping with unfun champions. Which is a real shame, because it might keep those people in the game, but it reduces the net depth of the game.

It's an unpopular opinion, but I really wish they would go back to the practice of nerfing problem champions into the ground until they have a chance to get a rework that makes them fun to play against. It might have ruined the experience for the one guy who played that champion every game, but the other 9 people who played with him are better off for it.

Ziggs/Heimer/Teemo imo are all unfun to play against but not overpowered

Riven/Leblanc/Katarina are unfun to play against and are overpowered

Just my opinion

Lee sin isn't overpowered based on numbers, hes overpowered because he has too many damn powers.

He does everything a jungler should, including things rito has specifically stated they don't want jgers to do.

no nerfs will hurt him that bad, he needs a rework, but rito doesn't want a riot on their hands.

haha, leaving crit mechanics in the game no, it's because all those wannabe pubstompers are mad when some chance based mechanics prevents them to kill somebody but they don't mind at all if some chance based mechanics helps them to kill somebody faster

also your whole example is very bad because lee, nida etc low winrate annoying champions actually need a substantial skill to realize their potential, it's not chance based in any way

Any champion is overpowered if you don't know how to best utilize your own champion, pounce on other champions downfalls, and overall counter your opponent.

Think of Teemo. He's hard to lane against because he constantly blinds and poisons. But he's not very good at taking a consistent beating and getting gaps closed on him. Everyone knows if you focus out teemo quickly then he's not a problem with his high damage over time.

Overall, any champion can be OP. Except Bard, he's just a lost cause.
