Because there are other mechanics that went into Nasus, kiting, paying attention to mana cost, etc. With Aatrox it was a two fold thing of him not working on top of just being a stat check, old Aatrox simply didn't work hence why it wasn't until this year he saw any real amounts of play.

Kiting was an essential part of learning the old Aatrox what are you talking about? Managing his health costs etc. He didnt see play because well yes that to some degree but also because he didn't feel rewarding, unique, or much of anything to play if you weren't snowballing also please watch https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qy9A7phk5LU.
