Why does Darius use mana?

Brascus··85 votes·19,544 views

I thought mana was supposed to punish bursty playstyles for being careless with their attacks? You get a ton of power over the curve but you only get a few tries. Everything about Darius is a sustained battle of attrition similar to Garen.

It just feels weird on Darius, y'know?

Edit: So Meddler very kindly chimed in:

We put mana on champions like Darius primarily to add some cost and decision making to their ability use in lane (reduce 'just use it whenever it's off CD as a playstyle). Darius's costs don't scale as much as his mana pool does, so as the game progresses he'll be less and less limited by mana costs, with his gameplay shifting to be much more about target choice and positioning.

The only ability that has enough mana tax slapped on to contemplate mana management early game is your dunk. The things that restrict Darius' combo early are the same things that restrict it late -> positioning, except early he has no DMP, boots or ZZrot, no CDR so he can't spam anything even if you wanted to and his E is both his initiator and defense, burning this can leave you more vulnerable than most because it gives the lane opponent a huge window of time to have their way with you.

You'd have to increase his mana costs to dunk levels before it could contend with any of the factors that have a large impact on his actual decision making, which would require you to lower CD's and then he could actually spam **and that would be oppressive and very unfun to get E'd back to back even if he could only do it once. ** So Darius always has to be limited by CD's, which along side his immobility are his tuning knobs, not his mana.

His mana doesn't do anything and if it did his CD's or damage would have to be buff'd to compensate which would create a monster. Where as removing his mana doesn't impact him.

Because unlike Garen, Darius is a weak ass punk who needs to use external magic to make himself worth something. Garen is filled with the pure light of Demacia, and thus can sustain himself endlessly on justice alone. http://i.imgur.com/W0wVY4c.gif?Noredirect

He also has the AD equivalent of Deathcap on one of his abilities, so there's a lot of physical damage if he builds the right items.

Since when is item 3077 the AD equivalent of a Deathcap?

He used to* have an AD Deathcap on W

Because if Darius didn't use mana then he wouldn't be a war of attrition, he'd just be endless combos. You'd have no reason not to full combo the enemy laner at every opportunity.

Aka even more extreme version of his "never not able to combo you" post-rework mana costs.

Brascus2 votes

But it takes like 3 team fights to run out of mana, when he's laning you don't even notice it and if you have blue buff mana is deleted.

It is extremely rare for any class to run out of mana in team fights - they're all either expected to buy mana or balanced around not buying it. Darius isn't unique in being able to get through team fights without running out of the blue stuff. And "manaless with blue buff" applies to every bruiser top.

FistOfSharkiesha17 votes

This. He'd be an even bulkier, better duelist version of Riven. 80% of top laners wouldn't be able to touch him because he could get 5 stacks of blood on them in just a couple seconds, heal his missing health with Q, and either back off and let blood nearly kill the enemy or enjoy his 120 AD at level 1.

Why do half of the reworks in the game use mana?

Anyone that gets an update and isn't a mage is essentially manaless. Especially with the new mastery.

HighH12 votes

Tell me what reworks have been manaless if they weren't manaless already

With champions like Fiora and Darius you usually have to try to run out of mana if you really want to.

If Darius had no mana, he'd just be able to spam his strong harass combo all the time whenever it was off cooldown.

Doesn't have a way to keep you in her range, nor a way to heal up. Darius would be unbeatable by level 6 for any melee that isn't Illaoi if he was manaless.

Being fair, Riven doesn't make you bleed out like a pig with every hit.

Riven shoots sword lasers and explosions. MANALESS

Darius swings his axe. MANA

Yeah I've always asked this too. It seems arbitrary who they decide to give mana restrictions to and who doesn't have them.

crippler382 votes

doesn't darius make his axe bigger when he swings it? not sure myself feels like he does but anyway

because mana probably = fuel and when riven fights it's not her powering her abilities so much as it's her sword, darius is doing all of this by himself thus it costs his fuel.

this is probably why ninjas use energy because they're trained to go for long durations without refueling, this would also explain why the biscuits give mana back, the corrupting potion is a magic protein shake too.

Building more mana would mean you're uh... hold on my logic is taking a turn here uuuuuh... OH GOT IT building mana means that your items are giving you more of an energy reserve magically, like the frostborn and frozen heart giving you the power of ice and junk

health is of course your physical constitution-

actually it makes more sense if mana is a focus thing, ninjas have good focus and mana is how much concentration it takes, some items magically providing more concentration or helping you keep from being mentally drained easier.

I mean darius has to focus a ton to whirl that massive axe around aiming for the vitals with every blow while keeping his balance, all riven is doing is swinging her sword around while the sword does the rest, by that note garen just doesn't think about anything but justice and katarina only thinks about assassination and the like, very impulsive characters I feel

yes I tried to apply logic to a video game get at me

To limit him. He sucks with Mana items because he has such a great synergy with item 3071 and item 3065 . Those 2 give 30% CDR. His mana cost stays relevant for the entire game, so he can't keep healing with Q forever. summoner 31

Brascus3 votes

His healing isn't garenteed though and only really strong when he's surrounded and low on health. It can be negated by being too close (the irony of being melee and immobile).

Sahn Uzal2 votes

Yup. I actually dropped Darius for soloq, your team has to kinda work around you post early game. But that's the theorie behind it. summoner 31

Same. I think it's a similar case to Fiora, who I haven't seen Fiora go OOM either. That LCS game was totally photoshopped.

You dare question my muramana Darius?

Lord Galvatron5 votes

The main reason why he has mana is so he can't sit and spam Q and E in lane like a goon until he is able to catch and dunk you.

SociopathFriend5 votes

I think it goes something like this: "Do we want this champion to spam their abilities constantly?" Cooldowns only- abilities are generally weak to compensate their constant use. Garen Katarina Riven

"Do we want this champion to use their abilities often to create a unique playstyle?" Energy/Fury/Heat/Health- abilities are stronger but also give larger windows of opportunity in order to prevent as much spamming. LeeSin Aatrox Rumble

"Do we want this champion to have powerful ability to make a (Comparatively) massive difference whenever they're used?" Mana- forcing the champion to conserve their resources to make the ability count. Lux Malzahar Talon

Riven weak? She has really great early cheesing potential if level 2 or 3 is rushed. That's how Boxbox and Best Riven NA did it for so long.

Dunkrius2g4 votes

if you spam Q all day, you will be oom, but there is one item that fixes it all and that is item 2033 thus making him seem "manaless". His full combo costs 30 (Q) + 30 (W) + 45 (E)= 105 Mana at level 3. Any levels beyond that will lead to a maximum of 50+30+45= 125 mana per combo (excluding ult).

At level 6, he will only have 400 mana as his mana pool. It seems decent and seems fine for him.

You make him manaless and you will have to make his Q have a 13 sec cooldown. That's pretty much what will happen if he does go manaless. Oh yeah, Darius will just all in you all the time when he gets the chance. With mana restrictions, he will have to atleast think carefully to wasting his mana. http://www.auplod.com/u/udoapl7882d.png

Because Darius is a scammer, he uses mana-infused biceps so he drains them with every swing, unlike Garen's which are 100% Justice certified.
