Please remind me why new champions are not banned from ranked?

Brand new champions really should not be allowed in ranked for the first week or so of their release.

I mean really.

If you want real reasons why they don't disallow new champions in ranked here you are:

  1. New players already have the 1-30 experience. The only thing besides getting your rune pages and masteries set up is picking out champions or being excited to grab the latest one. Now you're going to... what... tell them they need to get past a certain level, build up their IP, grab the champion so they can finally use it in ranked.. and then not be able to play it? It puts too many gates on an already gated experience and kills hype for a character already previewed two weeks ago.

  2. There is nothing stopping anyone from taking any character (not just new ones) and doing the exact same thing. For example, someone can think Riven or Yasuo is OP on the current patch, go grab the character, and run them right into a ranked game. Has nothing to do with just being released. How many games have you been in where multiple people on your team don't have champion mastery? This happens all the time. Not to mention most people who are new to ranked are thrown in somewhere around mid to low silver where other people have been for a long time to add to that. The only fix is to require champion mastery to play a character in ranked, but then what? Again, you are just killing the experience of having fun with a character you just got simply so that a few people don't do something stupid with them in a game.

  3. While no one is going to be an expert Ivern yet, anyone who has at least done their homework on the champion can play it and do ok. If someone takes smite Ivern mid lane or immediately goes smite Ivern support then those people are probably just trolling you and they would have just trolled you with another character if that one wasn't available. We've all had the Leblanc and Nidalee supports before.

When a few bad eggs ruin things for everyone then all your left with is the environment in a ruined state and no one having fun. Sometimes you have to let people at least try to be responsible, even if a handful of them will still act like idiots in the end.

About the second point: While that's true, at least those champions are old. There is the chance that someone is on your team that already has an experience with that champion and you can ask them for help. This can reduce (but not completely solve) the problem. With a new champion like Ivern, though, this is almost impossible, because nobody will have experience with them unless they've played it on the PBE.

It's not exactly that, it's more that with older champions there's very good chance you've seen people play them so you have a good idea of how to play them yourself, likely builds, strong roles, and skill order also solidified themselves so that's less experimenting, and there's also some chance the guy read guides/watched streams.

Anyway you can even see the winrates for first few games increased noticeable a few months after release, so evidently there's a difference.

I just wanna adress these two points. At least if someone first times Yasuo or Riven in ranked they could've read some guides or saw some other people use it efficiently and seen their builds and behavior, thus gaining them a bit of an idea how to play that champion. A new champion doesn't even have a meta yet. There isn't even anything to emulate, so it's even worse than first timing an old champion. The first time I played Thresh, Zed, and Anivia I did really well simply because I had seen the champion enough to know a lot of their tricks and what they should be doing in various scenarios.

That's fair, but there are plenty of bad guides out there as well and everyone has a different play style. To add to that there are several articles of advice out there on how to play Ivern including when they did his game play preview with the lead designer and Scarizard where the play tester told everyone exactly what he was using and what to run.

Also, the same people who are going to troll you with Ivern are the same people who are not going to look up guides for Yasuo. Reading the meta, even on well known champions, isn't that easy.

On point 3: Incorrect, if you have natural talent it only takes 20 mins at most to master a champion (roughly by level 11 to 18 if not much sooner). I am sure while leveling up if you remember that experience anyway, you met those first time champ players that just naturally play a champion at max skill ceiling. So it may not even take that 20 minutes. These players are great to encounter and you woudln't encounter them without he first week rush or first time on free rotation (most illaoi masters/mains i've met didnt think she would be fun but the one time she was on free rotation they tried her and well the rest is history).

Personal opinion and assault: you seem really uninformed on how skill and skills aquistion works for homo sapiens and other hominids, apes, and mammals in general.

Lol. I like that you are trying to sound intelligent here, but completely missed what I was saying; then tried to come up with a new topic to strawman with and then didn't even use that one correctly.

Ok, so first off point 3 is about peoples motivation and not how long it takes to learn a champion. I was pointing out available guides and that people who are going to troll are just going to troll you regardless. The topic at hand had nothing to do with skill assimilation beyond mentioning guides.

Secondly, skill assimilation is not the same as becoming an expert at something. Learning the basics of how to do something and mastering it are two completely different things. For example, you might understand how to play a guitar in an afternoon, but you aren't going to become Van Halen in 20 minutes. There is a LOT of literature on this subject including ideas of how long it might take to become a master at something (most people say 10,000 hours). Feel free to look it up.

Because if someone owns the champion, they have the right to use them, it's as simple as that. Why should Riot tell people they can't play that champion? Because the player might suck? That's not Riot's problem at all.

Besides- they need for the new champion to be playtested as much as possible in as many ways as possible- that way they can collect the most data about them.

48983507DEL14 votes

They could acknowledge that it takes time to learn the fundamentals of ANY champion, and they should be practiced in norms for a decent amount of time before they're brought into ranked by anybody.

That's why I think new champions should be disabled in Ranked for about a week.

ChaoticPinecone6 votes

Your point makes sense, but your conclusion does not.

If it takes time to learn the fundamentals of any champion and every champion should be practiced in normals for a decent amount of time before being brought into ranked, why are you asking for a limitation on only new champions? Shouldnt that apply to all of the champions that you acquire?

BastionKross1 votes

In an ideal solution, you would have to have a certain amount of mastery (level 2 or 3) unlocked with a specific champ to have them available for ranked. This would effectively ban new champs from ranked for a while and have the beneficial side effect of stopping players buying older champs and taking them straight to ranked with no practice.

ChaoticPinecone3 votes

And my counter to that suggestion is always: What do you do about 1) Players who have been playing for the 5-ish years prior to the mastery system, and 2) Smurfs.

For example, I have 30 champions at Mastery 3 or higher, and most of them are from ARAM. There are many champions I have played and know how to play - even mained in previous seasons - yet they stay at 0 or 1 because I find them boring (Mundo, Cho gath, Nasus). The mastery system has been around for 1 year, and I've been playing for about 5. Only 1/5th of my actual gametime is recorded in the mastery system.

Then there are issues with reworks/minor changes - if the mastery system was used for this purpose, shouldnt you have to start over when the champ is reworked? Then theres always the question of how much of a change is too much of a change - Yorick gets changed into a brand new champion, Ryze keeps portions of his own kit but an entirely new playstyle, and Zyra is basically the same. If you dont restart the points on any of them, you fall into the same problem whenever there is a change in the kit. If you dont, then youre left drawing a line in the sand on what stays and what shouldnt.

There are so many complicated issues and arbitrary decisions that are needed to actually implement this idea, that I find its just better overall to allow all champions. Let the players sort it out. The chance of someone bringing a new champ into ranked being on your team is the same chance that someone will bring a new champ on the enemy team (its actually lower if you dont do it), so in the long run it will sort itself out.

BastionKross1 votes

What do you do about 1) Players who have been playing for the 5-ish years prior to the mastery system

Long time players like myself didn't have all their previous games recorded, so Riot had no way of giving us mastery to account before the changes. We had to start right from square one, just like new players had to. Riot evidently found this sacrifice acceptable. I didn't like being screwed over, but I understood that it couldn't have been any other way for champion mastery to be implemented. This is much the same.

  1. Smurfs

Part of the price of smurfing is getting all the stuff you need to get into ranked. Making smurfing more difficult probably isn't going to keep any Rioters awake at night, since the practice of smurfing is at best tolerated by Riot because they can't think of (or don't have time to implement despite six years) a better solution.

There are many champions I have played and know how to play - even mained in previous seasons - yet they stay at 0 or 1 because I find them boring (Mundo, Cho gath, Nasus)

If you haven't played a champion in a season or two (or even a long while), warm up games with that champion are not a bad idea at all. The champion itself may not have changed significantly, but their items, matchups, jungle clear speed, etc. very well might have.

if the mastery system was used for this purpose, shouldnt you have to start over when the champ is reworked?

That would be up to Riot's discretion. If it's a full rework like Sion or Poppy, champion mastery would probably need to be reset since it's basically a completely new champion with the same name. If it's a few minor changes like Zyra, there's no need to bother since the majority of her kit stayed intact or with small changes and the major changes only served to reinforce along the same lines what she was already doing beforehand.

With a grey area like Ryze, it would depend on how much those changes affect the champion's playstyle, role, and function within the game. At worst, Riot would probably temporarily suspend the current mastery level and force everyone to play one or two games before it's restored to exactly where it was before. Slightly inconvenient, but much much less painless than a reset. You keep your level seven mastery, and your teammates in ranked are assured you're not just skipping into ranked without knowing your champion got fundamental changes. Win/win.

There are so many complicated issues and arbitrary decisions that are needed to actually implement this idea

Why let difficulty stop change, especially if it's for the better? Letting champion mastery handle ranked eligibility would require quite a bit of work from Riot, but it's the most solid suggestion proposed to a problem League has had since forever.

I find its just better overall to allow all champions. Let the players sort it out.

I find it hard to believe you've been around for multiple seasons yet still have this kind of faith in the League playerbase. It's been years with this same issue and the community hasn't done jack shit to "sort it out". In fact, with the introduction of being able to pre-select champs to tell your team what you're thinking of picking before it's your turn, I'd argue it's gotten worse. Letting the community police itself is like letting the prisoners decide the everyday rules of the prison. It's not gonna be pretty.

This is our opportunity to ensure ranked stays competitive by removing irresponsible players who think they can play a champ at a competitive level despite not having much (or any) experience with it. It is not unreasonable to ask players to have some actual playtime with a champion before they hop into a ranked game. And no, the PBE doesn't count for a number of reasons.

ChaoticPinecone1 votes

I say "Let the Players sort it out" as in, let the overall game averages settle it. The players arent coming up with a solution - the averages make the solution. If you arent the person choosing a new champion in ranked, then there are 4 people on your team who can (less if you duo/dynamic) but 5 on the enemy team. There is a higher chance that the player picking new champions is on the enemy team instead of your team.

Your point about "Warm up games" for matchups, clear speed, and items is a very dangerous one. How far are you willing to take this?

How much time is needed to warming up? How long before youre required to warm up? Cause there are champions ive played since this mastery system came out but havent touched in a year. Why is the "warm up games" set that far behind, when Champions i got level 3 mastery when the mastery system first rolled out are playable, but are still subject to the same problem?

In 3 years, Garen for me might fall into the same place as Mundo - I wouldnt have played him in years (I play Garen into Riven when I'm top - as a support main, how often do you think A) I get top, B) Riven gets locked, and C) before my pick?). Should he then be unavailable for me, despite me having a level 3 mastery on him?

Then of course, matchups change patch to patch, season to season, etc. Items are always being introduced or balanced. Do you want a warm up games for every champion each time something changes? And again - how much change is too much change?

Then of course, there are other arbitrary decisions that need to be made to put this into place. How much experience is enough experience? Why not require Mastery 5? Why not require Mastery 6 or 7, which are the only masteries based on performance? After all, if its competitive integrity, shouldnt you only be playing your best champs?

On that note, if we are talking about competitive integrity, why are people allowed to play champions they have a 30% winrate on? Why do players who find themselves losing on a champion over and over again allowed to keep playing that champion in ranked? Doesnt that make them just as irresponsible?

Apparently you have more faith in Riot - this is the same company that introduced Dynamic Queue for one season then plan on removing it the next. So the S6 rank is a basically just a crap year - it doesnt follow the system in place than the previous 5, and wont be going forward. Do you want Riot to make the decisions that have a huge impact on gameplay?

And I agree - difficult decisions are worth it if the payoff is better. Instead, what is your suggestion? Screw over your dedicated playerbase that have been playing for many years while those who started in the past year see no difference. Let Riot make the decision of "how much rework is too much" - even if its one ability or passive. If Riot decides to make multiple changes to a champion (how many times has Riot reworked Ryze again?) then the players are the one who are forced into grinding.

Unless you have a reasoned explanation to all these problems (and there are more than I'm not mentioning), Ranked will just be "play a game based on Riot's random and unexplainable rules" if this gets implemented.

BastionKross1 votes

There is a higher chance that the player picking new champions is on the enemy team instead of your team.

That's wrong, and I'll tell you why. The same argument was used for trolls and AFKers when the new automated ban system rolled around. "Well, if you don't troll or AFK, there's a greater chance of an opponent having one on their team than your team does. So why punish at all if it works out statistically?"

Because no one wants a troll or an AFK to play with or against. They ruin games for both sides, and take a lot of the enjoyment out of a match by giving one side a huge advantage over the other. The same line of thought applies to people who take champs in ranked they have no idea how to play; they take away the enjoyment of a well balanced, competitive environment for nine other players. If you play a champ for the first time ever in a ranked game, it can be easily argued you're not trying your best to win that match. If you were, you would have practiced that champ beforehand.

Should he then be unavailable for me, despite me having a level 3 mastery on him?

The champ mastery system (as far as I know) doesn't keep track of how long it's been since you last played a champ. So as long as you achieve the minimum mastery level, the system would be okay with you taking a champ to ranked even if you haven't played it in three years. Riot could most likely program the system to keep such information and then use that, but that would be a lot of inconvenience for very little gain. You would have to constantly keep the 16 champions you need for ranked refreshed in your match history, and that would be unreasonable to ask of the average player just to stop a loophole that most likely won't get used all that often.

If you haven't played a champ in three years and you think you might need them for ranked, it is a good idea to brush up on them. Even Garen. However, at least with the minimum champ mastery system your allies know that you, at one time, actually played that champion and there hasn't been any major changes to the kit of that champion since that time. That's a lot more reassuring. Yes, the game could have changed around that champion in the meantime, but it's not nearly as big of an issue as having no experience at all.

How much experience is enough experience? Why not require Mastery 5? Why not require Mastery 6 or 7, which are the only masteries based on performance?

Since ranked requires a minimum of 16 champs to play a ranked game, it's unreasonable to force every ranked player to achieve a high champion mastery of so many champions at once. The requirements of level 6 and 7 mastery are steep because Riot intended players not to have more than a few champs at that level. It's meant to be special.

However, getting mastery level 1 is two games; four games at most if you lose all four. 16 champions with 3 games each to get to level 1 mastery on all of them is 48 games. Most players have played much more than that just getting to summoner level 30. That's extremely reasonable, considering you can do both at once.

why are people allowed to play champions they have a 30% winrate on?

Because there's too many variables in that circumstance. How could you tell the difference between someone having low skill with a champion as opposed to just having a run of bad luck or getting an AFK? If the sample size is low enough that 30% is within variance, you couldn't.

If the sample size is high enough, then that many games with a 30% winrate would drop you down ranks until you start winning more often and the winrate would go up again on it's own. The only abuse case I can think of here is if someone used one champion to climb and the other to fall down again; which is so rare that Riot wouldn't have to worry over it since it doesn't make much sense for a player to do that.

Apparently you have more faith in Riot

I have faith in Riot's worship of money. Better ranked integrity means more players playing ranked and enjoying it. More players enjoying your product equals more money.

Do you want Riot to make the decisions that have a huge impact on gameplay?

Who else is going to do it, Blizzard? Do you have enough money to buy the majority share of the game from Tencent? There's no one else to make those decisions. Unless you're implying there shouldn't be any more decisions that have a huge impact on gameplay, which is a great way to stagnate the game.

Screw over your dedicated playerbase that have been playing for many years

You speak as if Riot doesn't do that already on a consistent basis. It's the reason we share an icon.

If Riot decides to make multiple changes to a champion (how many times has Riot reworked Ryze again?) then the players are the one who are forced into grinding.

If level 1 mastery is an acceptable minimum, that's 2-4 games after a significant rework. That doesn't seem so unreasonable to me.

Unless you have a reasoned explanation to all these problems

Done.

Ranked will just be "play a game based on Riot's random and unexplainable rules" if this gets implemented.

"Play a new or heavily reworked champion a bit before taking them into ranked" isn't random or unexplainable; it's common sense. Fairly straightforward if you ask me.

EDIT: Listen. I get what you're afraid of here. You think that ranked shouldn't be very restrictive to get into, and I agree. However, I also think that ranked shouldn't be so lax to get into you can pull the kind of BS that is first timing a champ in a ranked game.

There's a happy medium inbetween those two. Restrictive enough that players have to actually play a few games with a champ before going into ranked with that champ, but lax enough that it won't take too long to get to that point.

The champ mastery system only need a little tweaking to be that restriction. Even mastery level 1 would be enough in most cases, and it's not a lot to ask the average player for.

9kPluzZ2 votes

It really doesn't tho. Most champs have only one combo you need to know to stomp. League isn't a matter of how good you are a lot of the time, it's how bad your opponents are

Has Riot ever said it doesn't take time to learn how to use a champion? Or that you shouldn't take them into Ranked? I'm fairly sure if you were to ask any Riot employee they would agree to both of those terms.

However, they would also agree that it's up to the player, not them- to follow those terms.

It's a bad idea to go AP Ashe in a Ranked Game- but people still do it. It's a bad idea to first-time a champion in a Ranked Game- but people still do it. At some level- people have to be allowed to do stupid stuff.

The people who are grabbing Ivern in ranked would STILL be playing him for the first time in Ranked, just 1 week later. You still have someone who doesn't know anything about the champion running around in your ranked game.

The people who would actually buy the champion and try them out in non-ranked... they ALREADY ARE. The guys who do first time ever in ranked are the guys who cannot be bothered to play any other mode ever.

DrCyanide3 votes

Don't know, but it is a bit of a double standard.

The LCS/Worlds rules ban reworked/new champions all the time. Yorick isn't available this Worlds because of his rework, Gnar wasn't available last, etc. The LCS is 1 week behind live, but they still prohibit teams from playing new champions the week they switch to a new patch.

But having people who want to play Ivern for the first time as a Top/Mid/Jungle/Support/ADC in ranked for that first week? Oh, that's perfectly fine by Riot!

Dengeden1 votes

Gladly. Champions have their IP costs increased for the first week because the first week is the time when players spend the most RP on champions. If Riot disabled new champs in ranked there would be less incentive for players to purchase RP. This is further compounded by release skin bundles.

"But muh ranked integrity!"

Game is free. You can sacrifice five weeks of ranked integrity per year so Riot can keep the lights on.
