Why do Sona players keep complaining about her damage, again?

chipndip1··3 votes·1,630 views

I mean, I know I was more or less this obnoxious in the past, but Sona players apparently find it reasonable to complain about a 40 to 160 base damage spell with a .5 ap ratio that can hit twice without aiming.

Do some quick maths, and that's 80 base + 100% ap up to 320 base + 100% ap in damage output without even having to aim it with a range of like 700 or so that prioritizes champs...before her AA. Not a lot of supports can do those numbers off of one spell on such a low cd, so why is the complaint there?

Because "Sona mains" are basically lazy players (or egirls) who just want their freelo with a champ that requires 2 brain cells to be played. Same goes for "Janna main" (yes I did hear people saying Janna requires skill to play).

looks like I know who I'm maining now

Because everything else Sona offers is really underwhelming?

I don’t play Sona, so I cannot say I have a deep understanding of her kit. That being said, she feels like an enchanter that has no real niche amongst others (and I feel this way towards a lot of enchanters, but Sona really takes the cake for “why pick her over anyone else?”). Her MS and healing are trumped by Janna’s passive and shield imo (I don’t have exact numbers) and her ultimate while useful, can be found on champions with better base kits that offer more (Braum and Nami have very similar ultimates to Sona imo).

So why pick her? I guess reliable poke damage.

But idk. I don’t play Sona.

Janna's shield is good for one person.

Sona's W pretty much outshields anyone if we're going by raw numbers, and is only limited by available mana. The potential numbers on it by rank 5 are like 625 base, I believe? And you can easily get it down to like...4 second cd? AND there's a heal in there? If I can find that thread, I'll just link it.

Edit: Found it.

Sona has the worst shit in the game. Q sucks. W sucks: Sona's W isn't just a heal. It's also not just a shield. It's a 2-man heal and a 5-man shield in the same spell. So when someone says "Sona has a lousy 30 hp heal at level 2", they actually mean she has a lousy 60 hp heal with a 50% ap ratio, since she always heals herself. Her shield? Fucking 25...but it's potentially 25 for 5 different people, adding up to 125 + 125% ap ratio shield...for a single point in the skill. Whereas Janna gets up to 210 base shielding with a .7 ap ratio by her E's max, Sona nabs a potential 220 healing + .5 ap ratio along with a potential 625 base shielding + a potential 1.5 ap ratio. So assuming we use 100 ap as a base (more like 150 if we go by Athene's + Ardent, but 100 is easier to mental math with), Janna could block 280 damage off of one E. Meanwhile, Sona's potentially blocking 775 damage and recovering 270 damage...on a 6 second cd before cdr.

Meanwhile, Sona's Q hits up to 2 targets. Sona's level 1 Q is actually, potentially, a automatically targeted 80 + 100% ap ratio move. Janna's W? Like 60 + 50% ap. Karma? 80 + 60% ap. And this isn't even considering the extra AA damage, which brings us a bonus 10 + 30% ap per effected ally. At rank 5, she's sitting on a spell that can potentially apply 470+ 250% ap's worth of damage to the enemy team...every 4.8 seconds before cdr (after cdr, at like level 11...it's like 2 - 3 seconds of this potential output?). Note: I'm not even factoring powerchord procs into this. This is just Sona's standard spell cast, assuming she effects all 5 allies.

Like I said, I don’t play Sona. Thank you for the corrections.

con fucking grat you deals 80 damage without aiming at lvl 1 on TWO CHAMPIONS which is shit because it gets reduced twice more by magic resistance

meanwhile nami dealt the same damage or probably more while healing

UnboundHades2 votes

you also have the aura that it gives to all of your teammates in it bonus damage on their next auto or are you just gonna ignore that along with it working with her passive for more damage if she decides to do that.

Ahristocats2 votes

OP talked about the base damage of the autotargetted bolts, not the aura

also the aura is shit, it requieres sona to be in 550 range while having 325 base ms and the lowest base stats in the game she can't even keep trading with an adc unlike janna that can win with her passive+W passive, and who can disengage easily due to having more movement speed than the enemy marksman.

Sona is shit, everything every number was manipulated on purpose to make her unable to work, i'm fine with that because the kit needs a rework

what is disgusting is: -people not acknowledging that she's easily the worst champion in the game right now -riot not willing to rework that champ or worse TALK ABOUT HER in the first place

You don't double the resistance just because you hit two champions. You simply double the value for hitting one champ, assuming both targets have the same MR.

Also, I already made a MASSIVE thread where one of the points was solely based on this specific concept: The AMOUNT of damage dealt is one thing. The application of damage dealt is different. The raw amount of damage dealt on Sona's end is perfectly fine for a spell you don't even aim that doesn't draw minion aggro.

Also it's up to all your ap value, so 30 ap means you're dealing like 110 ap damage total, plus a proc from STE and potentially Aery and Scorch...at level 1. A few bits less if you don't have Sorcery's ap bonuses. All this for just pressing Q.

Ahristocats2 votes

i admit that you don't double the resistance because you hit two champions, i was wrong

i don't care about aery and scorch because the enemy sup has it too

Now i will teach you something, you have something called power budget if sona total damage with Q requieres her to autoattack , it means her powerbudget was balanced around her achieving all her damage in lane by autoattacking

Now what happens if you use half of your power budget because you can't get in range to autoattack? exactly, you get destroyed massively by the enemy team You think Sona is going to win trade against janna who moves at 360 ms with both of her passives, use W to slow sona deals so much damage with passive+W+her autoattacks and the adc is free to hit a slowed 325 base ms Sona that has no defense what so ever?

Sona doesn't deal damage period her split damage is not an advantage, it's a fcking disaster because it makes the enemy lane able to sustain her pitful single targeted damage be real, sona's damage is not even close to being good

chipndip11 votes

With her high reliability and the fact that the move hits up to two targets with the same damage, giving her high single target damage would be overkill, would it not?

She can split damage without even having to split her focus or aim. Sure, you don't feel like it's good because the person you're aiming at isn't bleeding out from one hit, but you're still getting decent damage for a 50 mp investment that you don't aim...and you can potentially use her AA for more single-target damage.

Sona players generally don’t complain about her damage.

That was Pikanumber’s whole meme, but he was part of the Sona circlejerk and also didn’t understand basic math.

chipndip11 votes

They actually do...just not as vehemently as he did.

Her damage is far from the main thing people complain about. Mana costs and how much she feels like shit to play are much bigger an issue.

If anything, Riot's stance on Sona's damage is questionable at best : rather than attempt to fix it so that it is healthy for both sides, they instead made it so she is extremely obnoxious if you let her do whatever she wants or is instantly shut down the moment you so much as turn around to attack her, to the point where many Sona players max heal and simply use Q for Spellthief.

I can't help but feel a middle-ground would have been much better in the long run, even if/once she gets properly reworked.

Sona is very mechanically intensive and has a high skill ceiling.
