Urgot's rework: Is it necessary?
I first started playing this game in November of 2013. I find beauty in things that have been neglected or forgotten and began my search for which champion meeting this criteria would be the best fit. Then I saw the singular crab monster with a blade grafted to his arm and an energy cannon to the other. The voice was heavily filtered and each pause required a deep breath. It was a voice filled with pain and a desire to give this gift of pain. Furthermore, the play style came was intuitive and engaging for me as well. I then in my search for things of Urgot came across a post on website I had never been too. It was a Surrender@20 post in the same month I began playing:
http://www.surrenderat20.net/2013/11/red-post-collection-face-of-mountain.html
When I read this at the time, I didn't comprehend the game like I do now, but I was thrilled to hear that sometime in the distant future Urgot would receive updated visuals, story, and all the other bells-and-whistles that come with reworks. I was also excited to know I still had time to play with a kit I enjoyed.
That was two and half years ago. Now, I am not writing to complain about this fact-the fact that his rework has not VGU has not happened. No, I realize these things take time. I made a post about this over a year ago
and Riot responded feeling that he still needed a rework.
I would like to ask this question again: Does he need a rework in light of a panoply of changes that have aided Urgot?. The game has changed from a year ago and so has Urgot. Some of these changes include Urgot's fear on his ult, the new sustain of Tear, and champions top can't get items that make them as tanky but deal damage like they did before.
We now have a positive win rate albeit a paltry play rate (for plethora of reasons) for a champion who has weaknesses and counter-play.
There are champions who can block Urgot's long range abilities:
(
I have not seen this one top though he can still block the abilities)
There are champions with mobility who can outplay his long range abilities:

There are tanky sustain champions that can afford to ignore a considerable amount of harass (their health can remain higher than your mana supply)

and finally there are the champions who have ranged attacks or abilities like Urgot:
(hmm that is a lot of Yordles)
Am I saying these champions completely stomp Urgot? Heavens no! But what I am saying is that the counter-play is there for a more skilled opponent to take advantage of.
If Urgot was given back his range and damage, the lists I posted would be invalid for sure. Here is a main point of mine: Urgot is not the oppressive champion he was when Riot realized he needed changes to his kit.
Can his kit be changed to thematically to enhance his character while making him more "fair"? Sure. And cannot his visuals be changed to better bring about the grotesque, unholy monster in Urgot? Yeah.
But is it worth a seemingly incalculable wait knowing that Urgot cannot be apart of lore events, receive new skins, ect? Two and a half years ago I would have answered yes, but know I am not so sure. From what I can gather, Riot lacks a cohesive idea for a new kit, and the update list has Warwick now ahead of Urgot with scant details about where Urgot is headed and the progress that has been made.
I suppose that I worry that 2017 will pass and Urgot will remain in the same state.
