Why Poppy should have stayed her original concept.
I know that Riot already has it set in stone to keep Poppy in her new rework state. I know I have no power to stop it, so I'm simply giving my thoughts on why it was a bad idea to get rid of her in this game.
Poppy is an anti-carry. Some people call anti carry assassins. By design, that is effectively what they did. Kassadin was made to counter a mage-centric team comp. Poppy exists for an AD centric team comp due to her kit. Though she is a more general anti carry due to her passive. The purpose of Poppy is to shut down any team that focuses on a comp for protecting a carry. This is good design. Whenever a team is only as good as its carry, then it's only a good game decision to play someone to shut them down. That's called true counterplay, the board definition.
But there's a problem with today's League of Legends. Riot is focused on the idea of the self more than that of the team. They want every champ to be able to feel like they can solo queue and not be put under unfair circumstances. People like Poppy are unfair because they are made solely to keep someone from playing and having fun. I can see why Riot wouldn't want this in the game. It would alienate their fanbase and result in them losing money. But then that leaves a very huge problem in itself. When you negate a natural paper rock scissors scenario, you're forced to focus on a binary balance scenario. Assassins aren't thriving, or anything to keep a carry in check, so Riot buffed tanks and juggernauts and bruisers to fill the position assassins left behind. A threat they can see is less toxic than one they cannot. This goes double cause most of them don't have a lot of reliable gap closers. But this presented the problem of bruisers being amazingly powerful cause they would need damage to help take out high priority targets. And we all know what happened there.
Poppy's focus was to keep a carry in check. That's why her waveclear, her pushing power, her objective taking, and her turret taking sucked. This is a good thing. Winning a game is about killing the nexus. Poppy was simply a support carry. She was there to make sure if a team carry was getting too strong, she kept them down to give her team a chance to do their job and hopefully win the game. That's why when her ult was down, she got a lot more squishy and either had to flee or die. So instead of tweaking this role, we instead got a rework where Riot has made her into another bruiser tank. This is what is happening to the balance of our game, where assassins are being removed for the sake of "fairness", when it's only hurting the overall game balance. Marksmen will be able to remain strong when they are strong, and tanks will be able to remain strong when they are strong. It's simply frontline versus damage dealers game design, and that's both boring and bad for making a game have inherent ways to tweak and balance.
