Jungle gold update: questionable?

I also like playing jungle Fiddle without building any "jungle items." That's no longer feasible with the recent jungle update. You can't miss out on 10-20 gold on every camp.

Why shouldn't my friends and I be able to run a weird comp where every champion lanes, and we all grab stuff out of the jungle from time to time? That would now be critically inefficient.

It's already much more efficient to jungle with smite. Now, if you don't have smite, it's even less efficient to jungle, and that just seems like a WTF thing because it's closing off quirky, fun, ways that people can play.

I don't know if it's a good move or bad move, but the jungle items are pretty cheap and strong as well. You won't run into any issues getting them on jungle fid.

It's more the lack of options. What if I want to play a smiteless jungler? Bad idea maybe, but now it's effectively outlawed.

That is the case, yes. I was thinking the same thing, but at this point taking smite is your best option regardless of whether it makes certain items available or not.

I just feel like it's possible for a weird team comp to make it work. Now it's even more hazardous to try, and I do not like Riot demanding that we play the game in a specific way.

This is a mercy killing. The Smiteless jungle has always existed, and it's always been a way for one player to cripple his team. Your team needs Smite for objective control, so you may as well put it on the jungler. This was true years ago, and it's still true today. It's a flawed concept that people cling to, and Riot's finally willing to straight up tell people they shouldn't be doing it.

Riot shouldn't have to demand we play the game in a certain way.

It's more effective to have a jungler, than to have no one jungling, so that becomes the meta. The right way naturally becomes popular, and Riot doesn't need to directly control that.

. . I'm pretty much the only person I've seen jungle without smite, and sometimes the game goes really well that way :\

Sometimes it goes well, sure, but it's a noob trap, and it's one that Riot is finally removing. Giving up the objective control of Smite is a death sentence at higher levels of play. At low ratings, or in less serious games, you can drop it and do really well. No-one is going to punish you for it. But, all it ultimately does is teach bad habits for when players improve. They think this can still work once players are smart enough to take advantage of a Smiteless jungler on the enemy team.

I'm just not sure that it really is such a bad idea. .

And this is exactly why they stamped it out. It persists in the community mind even though top-rated players know it's horrible.

Most LoL strategy bleeds down from the top. This, however, is a strategy that starts at the bottom and bleeds its way up until people finally play well enough to stomp it.

But I'm just not sure there's anything wrong about that. A lot of powerful builds are used in lower teirs which aren't genuinely viable, but still see a lot of play until people eventually become skilled and recognize the faults. If I play on a smiteless team, and we're doing really well, okay: come and stomp that style out now. No one has done that to me, yet, so I don't think the answer is to have Riot manually disable that build: My playstyle shouldn't be fighting "Riot," unless they're summoning a champion against me. Why doesn't Riot disable most leveling runes, for example; they're not viable at top teir, but we have the option to use them, if we'd like.

As a matter of fact, removing Tier 1 and Tier 2 Runes has been a hot topic of debate (with both Riot and the community) for a long time.

I'm all for weird comps, but you can't really complain when they're not the best way to play. That's pretty much definitional; if they were optimal, they wouldn't be weird.

Game's gotta be balanced for the optimal plays.
