Zeke's Herald: Is this item being looked at? Or is it another "pile of crap" item?

I pretty much never get Zeke's Herald, even in compositions where it might be good, because the stats it gives to the wielder are absolute crap. Only 250 health? That's outdone by a freaking Ruby Sightstone. And the aura itself is worthless to supports and tanks, even if it might help out your mass AD team (which is probably getting countered by Thornmails).

If anything, I think the fact that Zeke's Herald is an aura item is the flaw itself. The aura is too niche, and the fact that it's an aura demands that you only get it for niche scenarios, instead of being practical. If it instead involved an active effect that affected one ally, that'd be much better.

Here's some rough thoughts on how Zeke's Herald could be changed:

Recipe: item 3067 + item 3801 + item 3801 + 550 gold = 2600 gold +600 health +100% base health regeneration +10% CDR

UNIQUE ACTIVE: Place a buff on target allied Champion granting it +X attack damage and +Y% lifesteal for Z seconds. This cannot be used on self.

This solves a few problems. One, it makes the item better as a personal buy, though not necessarily for cost. The loss of 10% CDR can actually be a bit of a buff too, as it makes Zeke's Herald more compatible with other support items. On live, Zeke's Herald frequently causes "CDR Overload", pushing past the 40% cap and thus wasting stats, so reducing it to 10% causes less overloads.

Second, the aura is removed in favor of a single-target ally buff effect. This actually makes the item more general purpose, as you could always put it on your team's ADC. It might require more action on behalf of the support player, but surely the benefit would be worth it.

Lastly, the way the active is configured means you can't use it on yourself, so fighters and bruisers shouldn't poach its effect.

Anyone think this could work?

Zeke's is actually a severely underrated item right now. Basically any gam where your team has either 2 auto attack centric champs or you have a fed ADC, it is a valuable pick up as support or jungler. It is surprisingly strong in a full team fight, often making your team deceptively durable. It's issue isn't that it is a crap item, it's issue is that it is impossible to tell that it isn't a crap item. It is extremely powerful, but at the same time, very hard to notice, sort of like how Aegis and FH are, except those are often pickups for when there is a single champion that it has a very large impact against (i.e. Vayne losing 15% AS is a big deal and immediately noticeable, but you mid lane gaining a bunch of AD and lifesteal isn't).

If you have two AA champs you are probably AD heavy. There are comps where this isn't the case, but they are few and far between.

Zeke's is like a bad version of Triforce. Too many stats that don't work together.

The problem with Zeke's is that there are no AD based supports. The stat allocation is poor for pretty much everyone.

GP and Janna are probably the best choices and it's still pretty janky. CDR and Lifesteal don't really mix well, as an AD Caster doesn't use lifesteal and an AA based champ doesn't use the CDR.

The AD is poor and the health is a stand in stat to fill in the gold cost of the item. Honestly it would probably be best to drop the health and just make it a gold income item.

It also needs an on use effect, as it stands it's purely for outstatting your enemy.

Then there's the problem of the stats being subpar to alternate items. This is an ADC 7th slot item meant for the support to carry around.

I like your ideas a lot.

But Zeke's Herald is uh... another pile of crap item they don't want to be good, basically.

Give it Grievous Wounds, maybe even on the aura (though that would be pretty imbalanced, I think).

I dont think it would be, its a counter item for tanks to have when dealing with healing and lifesteal because ap dmg champions already have item 3165 only difference would be item 3165 you have to get them to 50%hp for the effect item 3050 you would have to be in aura range for it debuff I think the only balance change id make is that the debuff aura would work like item 3110 and be removed as soon as you go out of range and not linger like item 3165 .

Zeke's Herald fills it's niche fine.

It's a decent back-line support item when you're running double AD compositions and has seen play on numerous occasions.

Unlike Locket and Mikaels which are built more often by supports, the scenario for getting a team wide AD/Life Steal aura are rarer, but the item itself in those scenarios is insanely rewarding.

Zekes is just not good.

It belongs in the trash can along with

Ohmwrecker and the Zz'Rot Portal.

Zekes is the most gold efficient item in the game.

However, it is simply an unpopular item.

Supports dont buy it because is it isnt as obviously useful as something like an aegis, righteous glory, or randuins.

No one else buys it because it is an aura, and they think that is the supports job to carry those.

Its one of those invisible power things, like old sona.

So.... they'll nerf it?

So.... they'll nerf it?

They will probably remove it for season 6

they don't buy it because very and i mean very few people can actually use the stats of the item and for those who can use the stats of the item they can simply get much better items. The only reason you would ever buy this when your entire team can benefit from the Aura and that in itself brings another whole lot of issues

It really needs to be built from targons. item 1053 + item 3097 give it the same aura, and the healing active from face of the mountain and it would be a decent support item.

MrDrBudd1 votes

this item is actually the most useful its ever been right now in this meta than it ever has been from what i can tell. with tanks coming back with thornmail/gromp it really helps your adc not kill themselves...

Minrog1 votes

Support Volibear loves item 3050 !

There are probably a few other examples where it can be useful, AD/tank hybrids like Shen TaricLeona could do it as a 3rd item. But it is for supports and your team wants item 3117 item 2045 item 3222 in every game basically. If they ever nerf the required active on item 3222 then item 3050 might move up to a second item to boost a juggermaw or other hyper-carry.

What if Zeke's Herald was changed to provide more passive stats (perhaps some innate AD and Lifesteal), but instead of having an aura, it has an active that allows you to place a destructible (segmented health, like wards, but it's visible) flag that provides an aura in an area? The aura would only be able in an area, and the flag itself could be temporary— meaning that the item itself could have more stats. The aura effect could be named Stark's Fervor, after the item's old name. (If it isn't already. I haven't checked the buff tooltip because I haven't seen a Zeke's Herald in a while.)

Edit: Riot could just remove the aura and replace it with Cinderhulk's bonus health amplification passive, so there's be less QQ over top lane smite + Cinderhulk.

  • It gives 100 ad. If you have a team with mostly scaling ad abilities, you should get it.

Honestly, I love the current zekes herald, especially on Olaf Warwick Nasus Trundle and a few others, and it jsut makes life so fun

But with your current idea, and how they could rework it, it most certainly seems that it would become a support item, its cheap, at a mere 2600, maybe for champs like Braum and Alistar , because it gives solid tank stats, and allows your carry to do even more damage

It's very good if your team has an ADC-heavy comp. It goes along well with item 3504 too, but you're right. The CDR is almost always a wasted stat. I've built Zeke's + Censer on Karma before when my team had 2 AD laners and a tank jungler.
