Ghostcrawlers Article about "Diversity" made me chuckle...

Martensitic··200 votes·7,718 views

...because meanwhile, the champion pool of VIABLE champions is down to the lowest it has been since mid season 5.

"Diversity" doesn't mean rotation through the champion roster based on what your PR department wants to put on the bigscreen at the next ESport event. Diversity means seeing things like Urgot being played, and people having to take into consideration that Mordekaiser could be picked.

About 30 of your champions see regular play and bans. There are 133 champions in your game.

AurelionSol Diana Fiddlesticks Garen Gragas Gnar Heimerdinger Illaoi Kalista Karthus Kassadin Nunu Nocturne Skarner Taric Velkoz Yorick Urgot Varus Teemo Warwick MonkeyKing Vladimir Shen Taliyah Soraka Sona Lucian Lissandra Kindred

...and many many more barely ever see play, and when they do, they are more a burden than a teammate.

Ghosty, I won't ask if you actually play the game, I will ask: Do you listen in on your own ESports Events? Do you hear the crowd when champions like Sejuani are hovered?

And do you also hear how all those cheers die away to nothingness when the player inevitably decides to play one of the "same old", because he has to?

Reflect on that before you write the next "article" that makes me spew coffee over my desk laughing.

Yeah! Remember when they nerf Sejuani because, "her time in the spotlight is done" or whatever, but they wouldn't touch Lee Sin for a long, long time?

Wtf you talking about? They did touch Lee sin like 2 month ago, didn't you see that buff they did? they touched up on him because he wasn't seen for half a LCS split. (Riot logic if LeeSin isn't played for 1 split then there is a problem that needs to be buff for lee).

support is bard/braum 90% of the time sometime they even end up banned, 10% of the time it's Nami Janna Thresh Sona why nothing is being done for her? even when she was op after the mini-rework she was played one time and lost Soraka still worthless in competition Blitzcrank still worthless, why would you pick him? 100% of his kit is his hook, nerfed along with soraka and sona for ranked games, his base stats are so fucking shit compared to braum, and his w/e/r is a joke Taric i think riot forgot him at this point Zilean has the ability to be strong in competition if riot fixes some things TahmKench was a good pick in competition and disappeared after his nerfs

For Blitz, his kit wasn't designed for the support role. He was an AD top laner that got kidnapped to support because of one ability, and has had his top lane kit balanced around AP supporting ever since. Blitz either needs a kit rework to be an actual support or have his numbers improved and Q changed so he can top lane again without being abused botlane.

For Sona, she's basically a less dependable Nami since their kits overlap so much. Nami can have her hard CC by level 1, and that's a huge advantage. However, Sona gets to spam her skills... after level 6, and when she gets enough mana items, and when she lives longer than three seconds in a teamfight. Not a good trade. Forcing one of the squishiest champions in League to get close to the frontline to get the most use of her kit was a bad idea.

Kench was actually a fairly good pick... top, mid, and jungle. When the frog was strong, very few actually took him support because he could be so much more powerful with solo gold. Then his kit got nerfed and trimmed down to fit him into the support role, where nearly everyone abandoned him. Hell, he's not even popular among support mains.

Taric is actually quite strong and able to duel down solo laners as a support... in the late game after he's gotten some armor items together. A lot of matches tend not to reach that point. He's a late game support, which is kind of like saying he's sunblock that's only meant to be worn at night. Supports are at their most vital in the laning phase, so Taric's power curve is the complete opposite of what it's supposed to be. Maybe they made him into a top laner and just never told anyone.

that's has nothing to do with this, Sona's strength is aqueired at lvl 16, who thought this was a good idea?

everything got nerfed in her kit with the exchange of 40% cdr at lvl 16, and before lvl 16 she's the weakest support ever, can't fight, can't poke (that's a big word but i guess it depends on match ups) can't even CC someone since her ulti cd is 140 seconds.

at lvl 16 she aquieres the ability to spam an AOE 400 hp shield and something like 300 or 400 heal on 3 seconds cd, but before this she has nothing else

Diminuendo has the ability to be relevant but it lasts 2 seconds and needs sona to has 3 stacks during the moment someone does his burst

i can't wait riot to see how garbage her kit is before lvl 16, WHICH YOU NEVER GET AS A SUPPORT, i did one game in this week as sona, and i got lvl 16 just before we ended the nexus, are you fucking kidding me?

{quoted} Forcing one of the squishiest champions in League to get close to the frontline to get the most use of her kit was a bad idea.

high risk high reward, the reward is just aquiered when the game is already decided if not ended this reminds me the Sona version of HON, her ulti makes everyone invulnerable around her in 400 AOE but doesn't make herself invulnerable

BastionKross6 votes

I was agreeing with you, but I wanted to word it differently because I made the same point for Taric. You can't give a support a powerspike at that high of a level.

However, unlike Taric, Sona has Nami doing a lot of the same things and doing them a lot sooner. That hurts Sona.

high risk high reward

The "high risk" part I'm on board with. Sona is one of the squishiest champs in the game, and her kit forces her to get close to the heart of the battle with her only defense being a weak heal/shield ability that she can't spam to protect herself until late game. Very vulnerable, but forced into placing herself in danger constantly, even to poke.

The next part is where we disagree. "High reward" implies that she actually achieves something above and beyond other champs once she steps into danger. She's got the same aura issue old Taric had: a potential for thousands of gold worth of stats in a teamfight, but in reality that rarely happens due to the team spreading out and Sona's AoE being smaller.

And if it does happen, no one notices.

That's a pretty lame reward, at least compared to other high risk/reward champs who get pentakills, big plays, and the satisfaction of observing the exact moment the opposing team shits themselves when they realize they screwed up. High reward isn't just winning a teamfight, it's about letting the player feel like that teamfight was won specifically because of them. You don't get that with Sona, unless you're in ARAM.

Which is kind of hard to do as a support and not a midlaner.

Everyone can agree Blitzcrank should get out of botlane considering how oppressive he can be when paried with adc's like Jinx or Draven.

Weasel Kensei8 votes

The absolute most oppressive pairing is

Blitzcrank MissFortune

Let me tell you why.

With Blitz you need to hide behind minions to avoid his Rocket Grab (Q), and with MF you need to NOT be behind minions cause of Double Up (Q). Meaning there is nowhere to stand that you cant get screwed. This results in you and the support being unable to trade, or poke because ANY position will see you either hooked, or chipped from their Qs. This is on top of a full Blitz combo and MF ult (which you wont be able to avoid cause of Blitz CC) is basically an instakill.

Cait and Jinx can land snares under Blitz victems and thats ugly, all the CC give Twitch and Draven more time to pound the victem, and Vayne, Lucian, & Ez will be able to get into the perfect position with their mobility to max their damage during a Blitz combo yes. MF just needs to hit R post 6 and theyre toast. They also can both move speed buff to catch you, and Make it Rain can make it very easy for Blitz to W, E, R, Q for ganks.

This pair is one of the most abused champ combos I see when a duo que is bot lane. Nowhere to stand... I dont even mind Blitz that much, but when MF shows up, I get a little sick.

My sweetest dream would be never to se Blitz bot again. I have no problem playing against Tresh or Nautilus, I dont even understand why Blitz is giving me such a bad time :(

As a Support Main... Here are my views. Though I'm sure you too are a Support main, I didn't want to pop in and be like "heh heh, I know everything even though I play top (or something)".

Bard has great heals, incredibly powerful passive that slows, game-changing Q that slows or stuns, fast traveling E, and a R that stops a fight long enough for help to come

Blitzcrank not a Support like you said and isn't designed to be one

Braum passive that allows stuns and a Q that does kind of what Bard's does but a little easier, and W that stops strong attacks and is a great shield, and E that is kind of cool to see on a support, and an R that is really helpful in a team fight or when you are going to initiate (and he's hard to kill)

Janna is actually seen a little because of her kit that actually feels like it helps the team. Her Q is great for pushing, her W is great for stopping enemies from running away, her E is amazing as it is the only ability to temporarily give bonus AD and a shield of all things, and though her ultimate can be iffy it still heals for quite the amount.

Lulu is not even on your list... She's actually a ton of fun and makes for a great support. I kind of wish she was somewhat easier to use but still her kit makes supporting a little easy. Her Q acts as damage and a slow (and can slow from very far away which is neat), her W speeds up allies or completely nulls an enemy, her E gives sight or gives an ally a shield (and pix on the W and E give the ally bonus damage). Her R gives an ally a ton of health and is great for if they are about to die. They even keep what they were healing up (that was not apart of the bonus health) while ulted which is kind of cool.

Nami is a strange case but none-the-less she deserves more than she gets. Her W is a bit high in price. Her E doesn't allow the bonus damage to hit towers. Her Q is her only saving grace. And her R can be stopped by Yasuo which is kind of what's really hurting her pick rate. I honestly feel that her E should be able to hit towers and that her W should be more cost friendly and not take away heal if it hits an enemy... (at least that's what I think I remember it does... its been a while since I played her.)

Nunu is supper fun as Support, except that his Q doesn't work on actual enemies that is. I like that he can eat/heal himself and weaken maybe a strong minion for the ally to kill, but its kind of weird to use. But I still like it. He's not typically in lane but I think he's a fun champ to use. I believe his kit is very straight forward and very rewarding. He's strong but he's even stronger when supporting. With his W that gives a very long AS and MS boost, an E that slows enemies AS and MS, and even his R slows AS and MS (he's like a complete counter to champs like Jinx and Twitch who work off of this). I'd say he'd be a meta changer if many supports actually picked him up.

Sona just ins't seeing much in her supporting benefits which is what is really hurting her. Her Q passive to give allies bonus damage could be enhanced by a tiny bit, her shield duration or amount to allies could be a bit more, the slow she gets from her E is actually pretty good, and her R is just a easy to use stun. Its not that I don't think she's bad but her kit could use more in the means of enhancing and helping teammates which is kind of what the rework tried to do.

Soraka got hit hard with the compensation hammer. To compensate the large heals she could give, they made it cost 10% of her health per heal which is just stupid. They just need to have her heals cost 110/120/130/140/150 mana per cast and take away the dumb healing passive that connects to her W. She will have a strong heal but that's kind of her niche (as they were so kind to point out). Its somewhat stupid to try and have a Support like Soraka have to get items like item 3083 because they have her W cost 10% current health. The rest of her kit is actually really nice. Her Q slows enemies, her E still silences and can snare enemies, and her R still heals everyone for a grand amount. But that W just makes her so unbearable. She isn't really meant to be a Tank and has no real use for the health in her kit rather than to just stay alive. Its like asking Alister or Taric to spend 5% of their health to heal their allies, it just isn't right and it leads to where they are now with a means to heal themselves.

TahmKench is still a nice pick for supporting but I feel that his nerf to his E was a bit much... his Q slows enemies and can even stun but its not easy to accomplish this all at once. His W can shield enemies from damage, but I kind of dislike the amount of damage he deals to enemies if he actually eats them. It makes me again question why Nunu can't use his Q on enemies (even if its just a fraction of the damage). Getting an enemy out of a team fight has (in my experience) caused a great turn in many team fights and lead to many victories, so that in itself is amazing. I (however) an sad at the nerf to his E which wasn't needed (which makes him a bit easier to kill in general). His R isn't as strong and at least it doesn't effect towers and it only helps in weakening enemies.

Taric is actually very useful and he is indeed meant for late game, but even then his Q can be lack-luster and his kit can be hard to control at times. I kind of feel that his W should have a more or less one second cool down (and I mean this in a way that will just help his Q) as his Q only heals the person with his W on them (or if they are around the Q). I also feel that his Q just doesn't seem to heal at all the same as his original and if he only heals himself its also pitiful. The nerf is obviously on his Q and it makes it seem like it isn't doing its job. His W is to just give a shield, it doesn't even give bonus Armor like it used to, to nearby allies. His E is easier to use and far better, his R does more for team fights, and his passive is stronger and more meant for a "Fighter" which is what he is. I feel that if his Q were to take more from his bonus health (or was it current health) by 10% of his bonus health (and scales to 30% at max) then it would be amazing and work better. And if he is alone, the heal should grow to 12% (and scale to 36% of his bonus health) and even have slightly bigger numbers. I know he isn't meant to be a healer and this really won't make him into one but as a Support it kind of is his job to keep his ally alive and with such a weak heal... I can't really just depend on the small shield it gives. (I mained Taric in the past and like the change but hate how the new Q just feels so overly nerfed from the original.)

Thresh has a lot to offer in his kit, but that was because he was the newest Support up until the latest 4 came into the picture (that being Braum, then Bard, then Tahm Kench, and then Irven). He has probably the most fun to use stun on his Q but its not as effective as Nami's (which can stun multiple targets) but it does its job if done right and can even get campers who are next to the tower to get closer for the allie to pick them off. The W is great for shielding far away allies or getting them out of tough spots. And the E is great for gap closing. Same for the R (which stops enemies from running) and is best used in a team fight. I still don't understand the reason a "Fighter" type support gets bonus unlimited bonus but still, he is a Fighter so his attacks need to be strong and he should be at least a little hard to kill. I'd say his slows could last longer if possible. At least for his ultimate's slows.

Zilean is actually very useful. I've found out that his E is probably the most annoying thing to get hit with. The only problem is that its not great when used on an ally. Its kind of short and could last 3 seconds rather than just 1.5. I'd even say that Lulu didn't need her nerfs to her MS boosting W (or was it her E that did it...). His W could actually replace his current passive, allowing him to duplicate a spell every 10 seconds rather than passively give allies more XP. Not sure how this would be useful unless you were behind in XP... His Q is actually very useful now as it stuns enemies and his R is just as useful because a revive is a revive and allows for a second change (or to get enemies to stop hitting you for a while as you run away or attack). If his E allowed more time to give MS to allies and his W was something different that gave more to the ally, I'm sure we'd see more of him in Ranked games or LCS games.

Ivern is still new and I can't say what I think of him just yet. I like his kit as his Q allows for Fighters to have an one-up on an enemy who is snared, his W gives cover from enemies (even if it is small), and his E gives a small shield. His R also barely deals any damage and can knock-up enemies. If I had to give him anything, it would be more of a shield on his E because its honestly the most Supporty thing in his kit thus far... but that's just me.

These are more or less my views on all the Supports. Also Leona isn't technically a Support even though I do view her as a Support with a passive that only works for allies, three stuns, and a slow all in one kit.

Veltox4 votes

You won't see Soraka in pro-play because her kit is either meh specially with item 3123 being a thing or a walking fountain.

Sona x Rubick3 votes

item 3123 has to be removed and riot knows it, the problem is that riot has no clue how to balance healings

Yeah but Soraka still needs a rework.

Arakadia3 votes

I seriously think instead of nerfing Bard and Braum into Rek'Sai or Kalista state (As Braum and Bard aren't much cancer, atleast compared to Kalista or Azir) they should prevent you from picking the same champion once its banned or picked. Because its not fair that Shen and Bard are fair in near every game but a handful.

RainbowIcee2 votes

We should buff their solo lane potential. That would indirectly buff their support role.

Idk what to do about sona tbh..

Soraka should be reverted back to before, her heal bot game is stupid. Who wants to just play a heal bot ?

Blitz.. ehhmm he's blitz

Taric, revert back his rework. He is boring as shit now and he lacks satisfaction. I don't really feel the new taric brought him up in viability any more than old taric did.

Zilean, i feel he's fine. It's really hard to land his combo most of the time but ir's really effective

Tahm, the nerf on his dmg was unjustified. It was too much, let him at least be able to eat monsters in jungle.

They should remove keystones, if not just masteries in general.

Keystones favor such a small base of champions and they have so much influence. A champion like Garen, what the hell do you get on him. He doesn't trade as much through autos, so grasp isnt that good, colossus does nothing, thunderlords?? He doesn't build that much damage to use it to it's fullest.

Meanwhile there are champions that use them way too well. When colossus was introduced, look at top lane!? It's only poppy-naut-maokai!

elon wątroba1 votes

Doesn't q proc grasp? I haven't played him for a while, that's why i am asking.

Spoofghoul5 votes

nah on garen you pretty much pick thunderlords because every other keystone is complete garbage on him

SteelMankind5 votes

The scaling component of thunderlords is pretty garbage compared to the base damage; Garen doesn't miss out too badly.

Also I'd imagine that Garen would like stormraiders. Fervor could probably do work in tank matchups. Grasp is still fine, as someone else pointed out.

Remind me again why keystones are bad? I just pointed out 4 different ones that each have a time and place, and support different playstyles. The decision making involved with choosing which one is best for the game you're about to play is way more involved than 21-9-0 or 9-21-0.

sit kid1 votes

I didn't mean to say say Garen had no options at all. He just doesn't have that one keystone that suits him perfectly, where as someone like Syndra and Viktor gets massive burst. Nautilus gets obnlxiously tanky with his W and colossus now. It's plain stupid.

Riot seriously thought adding all these features to masteries wouldn't create more imbalance, when we have 120+ champions. Some work better with them than others, and it is something they do EVERY preseason.

Implement new stuff that makes certain champs op -> nerf -> remove that thing or repeat We saw it with tank junglers where Gragas and Sej got too op because of cinderhulk. They got nerfed. Cinderhulk got nerfed. They haven't been touched in pro play ever since.

Naut is probably getting nerfed as well. Poppy for sure. Why add it though. Was the current mastery system broken? Did it create imbalance? Why fix something that already isn't broken?

SteelMankind4 votes

...Except Garen DOES get around the same amount of damage from Thunderlords as Viktor/Syndra. TLD is 10% AP scaling, 30% bonus AD scaling. A 750 AP mage gets 75 extra damage on the thunderlords proc, and Garen with BC and 15 AD from runes will get 20 extra damage. That's only a 55 damage discrepancy from a glass cannon build vs a juggernaut build. Both get to enjoy the same base damage.

Mages might use thunderlords better than juggernauts purely because they can proc it from their ranged abilities, but ranged champs dealing damage from a longer range than melee champs isn't anything new.

I assume by "current mastery system" you meant the pre 6.22 mastery system. The problem with SotA is how every champ in the game can use and appreciate extra health, and since junglers could stack it quickly, it was the only keystone anyone took in jungle. CotC was supposed to be an additional choice for tanks, since before for tanks it was Grasp if top, SotA if jungle, and Bond of Stone if support. Now all three of those roles have two good choices. CotC might be a bit too strong currently, but it's still better than SotA because its conditional power requires players to make wiser decisions than just recognizing the usefulness of 300 extra health.

Pro players themselves limit the champion pool, they can practice only a small pool of champions and so they prefer "safe" pick and generalist champions, unless some champions are EXTREMELY strong they won't even consider trying then. Also some of the champion you listed need rework (Warwick Urgot Nunu ), have a very unique gameplay difficult to practice for Esport (AurelionSol Heimerdinger Illaoi Teemo ) or are "beginner" champion (Garen ). You don't want to see Mordekaiser picked in pro plays because he would only be picked if insanely powerful.

Linna Excel5 votes

Right. There's a few players who have a wide pool, but most pros have a smaller but deeper pool of champions. Some of this is by design because certain champs work better in a coordinated team than others.

Matezoide6 votes

Thats true. It is a combination of both things, really.

It really disgusts me how the average LoL pro can only play like 2-3 champions while Dota pro-players have hero pools that reach +10.

Just another reason more bans and a different pick-order (Just copy Dota's pick-ban phase) would benefit pro play. It would force players to learn more champions and provide a large diversity increase. Add in the sandbox mode that is supposed to come soon(tm) so practicing new champions is actually simple and there would be a huge increase in diversity.

AcidTheWarlock10 votes

I literally cannot watch IEM Gyeonggi since the picks are literally all the same.

It's boring as hell. Worlds had better diversity than this.

I could care less how flashy Thresh and Lee Sin are, they're boring. I'd rather see things like Urgot and Darius, but according to the pros they'd be bad.

I can't see how Urgot could be bad, or why no one's touched Yorick or Kled considering the former's insane splitpushing and the latter's early-game strength and roaming.

Mindworm Jim3 votes

It's an unfortunate thing but the professional level actually discourages diversity by its very nature. While the game is certainly not perfectly balanced, the actual difference in strength between the very top and bottom champions is fairly low (a few outliers aside). The problem is that professional games are extremely important to teams. If a team loses too many they are demoted from the league, which is essentially the same as losing their jobs. Thus pro players tend to gravitate towards safe picks and well-established patterns, rather than risk everything on a weird pick.
