Lets have a civilized discussion about Voice Comms.
Alright first lets get these things right the fuck out of the way.
1: Voice comms are toxic, for many individuals.
2: Voice comms are often abused and not used properly.
3: Voice comms lead to harassment.
4: Voice comms can cause language barrier issues.
5: Voice comms are not needed for league of legends.
These are the arguments I have heard against adding voice comms to League of Legends.
1: Voice comms are toxic, for many individuals.
- Whats the difference between a text log and a voice comm. If the person is going to be an asshole, the person is going to be an asshole. You have the same function to mute the person then report the person after the game. If you are that thin skinned to where insults on the internet from a person you do not know NOR SHOULD CARE ABOUT hurt your feelings. Perhaps you shouldn't be on the internet. As a person who has been a internet child since god knows when. The internet is unmoderated and will tear every value of anything you believe in just because it can. If you don't agree with someone then you are against someone. That is how the internet operates (for the most part). This isn't even just a League thing. This is a people thing. Sorry, but the world isn't a nice place. You have to make it nice for yourself.
2: Voice comms are often abused and not used properly.
- Yes, that happens everywhere. In any video game. People will use the voice comms to play music, scream profanities, etc. Again. There is a mute button. That singlehandedly takes care of that issue.
3: Voice comms lead to harassment.
- I know its hard to believe this, but not everyone is an asshole. I know that females (please do not fucking turn this into a "I Identify as..." argument, this is for the sake of the majority.) will more often than males be harassed for being a female. Ranging from "Haha! The Female is a support!" to "Females should only play support!" Again people are assholes, but to be fair. Females are better at dealing with this toxicity since.. ya'know its been a thing forever now. I am not saying it is alright nor should the female have to deal with it. It just is how it is. And again, there is a mute option.
4: Voice comms can cause language barrier issues.
- That is the price they pay for playing on a server that they don't understand the language of. It happens. (I would find it hard to believe that they don't at least know some of the lingua franca. If you don't know what that means, then only stay on these servers.) This isn't just to League this is in every video game ever when someone from a foreign country comes to play in the US without knowing English. Or Americans go to another country and play on their servers (as long as it isn't tied into the US servers. So fuck off if you say Canada.)
5: Voice comms are not needed for League of Legends.
- Alright lets go with this argument. Lets take two of the best pro teams and take away voice comms from them. See how the game dynamic changes. Voice comms have an always will be essential to anything when working with a team. Not even just video games. Imagine if Riot teams didn't communicate with each other. Everything would fall to shambles stupidly fast. To say that a team oriented video game does not need communication is stupid. Then if you are going to say "We have pings! We can use those and chat to communicate properly!" Then explain to me how I tell my team what to during a stand off. Lets say I am a god tier typer and I have a Thresh, Vayne, Maokai, and Xin on my team. I am malzahar. Now I want to tell my team to do the following and it takes me 3 seconds to type all of this. " I am going to flash on the enemy ADC the second they are out of place. Then ulti them. Mao please follow up with your root because they will instantly QSS. This will give me and Vayne time to kill them. Afterwards these will focus on peeling for vayne as Xin knocks everyone else back with his ulti. We can then chase them with Mao ulti and vayne as thresh and I CC them to stop them from killing vayne." How long did that take you to read? How do I communicate that to the team with pings? How far back did I have to step in order to type that safely? How long did it take me to get back into position? Did the standoff break because someone took some stupid poke damage?
So to say that text and pings are enough for voice comms is stupid. If it were why aren't we using things like that in work forces? Text is used yes, but when it comes down to split second decisions. Voice is 1000x better than Text and Pings.
If you agree or disagree please explain to me why? I would love to know so that I can at least get an idea of where you are coming from, as I am still only human and may have missed something myself. But I personally believe that this is still better for the community as a whole.
