Minimum Champion Mastery Requirement for Ranked

I'm not a huge fan of this myself, .. but I think others might agree, especially with all of the concern with reworked champions like Nunu being taken into ranked matchmaking.

What if there was a minimum mastery requirement like even just level 2, since you start at level 1.

In otherwords, you must have played that champion, at least enough times to acquire level 2 mastery in order to pick that champion in ranked matches.

There would need to be one additional necessary adjustment (which should happen anyways). Mastery level should reset when a champion is significantly reworked.

This would not only eliminate the issue of new champions being picked in ranked, but it would also eliminate issues where players have never played the champion before.

Here is the big problem. I believe currently Ranked only unlocks once you have reached level 30 and own 20 champions. This would mean you would not only need to own at least 20 champions, but have achieved level 2 in at least 20 champions. I could see that being a bit of a task to place on players.

Maybe something similar to this could be balanced out, but I know people are looking for ways to solve this issue.

This keeps being brought up and the answer is still the same. I could have level 5 on every champ and not know how to play them or play them well. I could have just got them in ARAM a ton so if I take them on SR, I still get shit-stomped and look like I have never played the champ. Mastery doesn't mean your are good with the champ, or even that you know what all their skills do per say. To get to level two you have to have what, three wins on the champ or something?

  1. Mastery doesn't mean you know how to play the champ, just that you've played them a lot. I can hav a ton of games played as Vayne but still be garbage at her if I didn't actually try to learn her.

  2. Two just disable new and newly reworked champs from ranked for 3-7 days. That'll sort out the majority of the issue.

Not being particularly skilled with a champion is very different than not having set foot on the rift with a champion.

If someone has obtained Mastery Level 2, they should at the least have a minimal understanding of that champion's kit. Failing to understand that champion at that point is a failure on the player, and there is absolutely nothing that can be done to prevent that.

Again, Mastery has nothing to do with ability to play the champion, just that you've played the champion. I'm a garbage ADC but I play Quinn top. I can pick Quinn as an ADC but that doesn't mean I'll preform well in that role especially since I've played ADC a total of maybe 7 times since season two.

There is and isn't a failure on the player if ranked is locked behind mastery. It isn't because they player wouldn't be picking champs they want to learn so that they could pick them in ranked but grinding out matches so that they can play, regardless of if they win or lose. It's their failure for not taking anything away from their time playing x champ but isn't because they only played x champ so that they weren't gated from playing y champ.
