Just what is Gragas?

Maybe just me and my own incompetence but what is Gragas? I he a tank? is he an assassin? Is he a god damn mage?

He has Burst, Sustain, CC, tankiness. I always believed he's a tank but he can also take electrocute and go mid build full ap and boom, he becomes somewhat of an assassin mage thing like Cho'Gath. I he's a tank why are hi ap ratios so high? If he's a damage dealer then why does he have such tanky base stats and a hit box larger than Summoner's Rift?

I am quite confused by this. And for those who might think I am trolling or something, no I am 100% serious with this.

he was a burst mage but was nerfed pretty damn hard (he was op) and people began playing him as a tank

He was an AP fighter/tank who got reworked into being a pure AP tank like Galio.

Predator Gragas is a nightmare. While Gragas’s single-target combo of W > Q1 > E > W auto > Q2 > R is already frighteningly powerful, Predator + Runic Echoes lets him just run up to a fight, press R, and half-health everyone within the blast radius.
