Katarina Tentative Changes Feedback
Hello, I am a Katarina main for about 1.5 years now. My input on these changes is rather mixed, but ultimately I would say they shouldn't go through with it.
The first reason why these changes are bad has something to do with how the damage works. In order for Katarina to be successful in these changes, she needs a mix between attack damage and ability power. The changes to her E reflect that she should build some form of on hit effects to benefit the most from these changes (e.g: Ravenous Hydra, Trinity Force, possibly Lich Bane or even Iceborn Gauntlet for a Tankarina like effect). This would be fine, except for one small thing they forgot to change about her abilities if this were to happen... All her abilities still do magic damage (and are weak as (expletive removed) until level 6 when she gets death lotus where her damage will get bigger, but not by so much). This is bad for a few good reasons.
Let's look at a few hybrid champions that generally fall towards AP or AD and see how different they are from Katarina.
The first champion is Kayle.
Her passive and E synergize so that she deals more and more damage each time she hits a target. Specifically, her passive lowers the target's Magic Resist and Armor by 3% each time they are hit, all the way to 15%. That said, she doesn't need to build Void Staff or Last Whisper.
The next champion for comparison is Jax.
Jax has 2 abilities each that do either magic damage or physical damage. Jax also functions similarly to Kayle because he can deal magic and physical damage under certain circumstances. For example, his ultimate's passive allows him to deal extra magic damage to a target every 3 auto attacks. His W also does this with a slightly weaker effect, but it can also be proc'd with his Q causing it to deal magical and extra physical damage. His passive helps with his ultimate's passive by allowing him to proc it faster and faster.
After this we have Evelynn.
Evelynn has 3 abilities each, 1 of which deals physical damage and increases her attack speed equivalent to a Fiora E. The problem with Evelynn is that she has no easy way to stick to targets to lash out the damage unless she uses her ultimate. In other words, she has no blink/gap close and is melee. Aside from that, her Q scales off of both attack damage and ability power, and does magic damage. This is the only way she can do consistent damage when not necessarily close enough to attack them with her E, but far enough so she can attack with Q. Something I should note about Evelynn E is that it does physical damage, applies on hit effects (each time she hits them, and she only hits twice), and scales with attack damage and ability power. This makes her hybrid.
The second to last champion we have is Akali.
Now, this is a rather bad example since people rush AP and gunblade on her, then face roll. However, when we look at her abilities, we see she looks like a hybrid. Her passive, we see she gets a flat 6% of additional magic damage, from her attack damage, on hit plus 1% for every 6 AP she has. Her other part of her passive gives her a flat 6% spell vamp plus 1% for every 6 bonus attack damage she has. When we look at her E, she does physical damage on usage, and it scales with ability power and attack damage. However, her obvious problem is that her R is ridiculous at the current moment making her broken compared to the other hybrids.
The very last hybrid we have to look at is Poppy.
Poppy is quite a scary champion due to the fact that she can be completely invulnerable and unable to be disabled to 4 other champions, except her target, who basically gets DFG'd, but to all damage that Poppy deals. This makes her Q very dangerous, as it scales with both ability power, attack damage, her target's maximum health, and does magic damage along with her basic attack damage. Her W also gives her attack damage passively along with armor, capping at 10 stacks, and gives attack damage according to the level of the ability.
Now, what did that all mean? For starters, each of these hybrids had varying abilities that did either physical damage or magical damage, granted an on-hit effect or passive that grants magic damage that goes along with their basic attack. The tentative version of Katarina does not have any of that anywhere. Also, none of her abilities really synergize with her damage if she were to be reworked hybrid this way. Her Q does magic damage (weaker than before), and leaves a mark that does magic damage when proc'd by any of her abilities. Her W scales only with bonus AD percentages (and is technically nerfed unless you build a lot of attack damage), and does magic damage. Her E does no damage but resets her attack, and gets rid of 80% of the cooldown when it targets an allied champion or enemy champion (voracity of course would instantly reset it). Her ultimate has both a massive ability power and attack damage ratio, but deals magic damage. She can't classify as a hybrid when all of her abilities do magic damage; she's basically an AP assassin/mage then.
Here's my fix (assuming you want a hybrid based champion): Edit: whoops, not their fix.
Voracity has been changed so that you only get 10 seconds off instead of 15.
Bouncing Blade now does magic damage on hit, scales with 60% of her bonus attack damage and 70% ability power. The mark may be proc'd for additional magic damage. The mark scales with 40% bonus attack damage and 20% ability power. Total Dagger Damage is now: 75/100/125/150/175 (+70% ability power) (+20% bonus attack damage) Mark damage is now: 25/40/55/70/85. (+20% ability power) (+40% bonus attack damage) Overall damage is now: 100/140/180/215/260 (+90% ability power) (+100% bonus attack damage)
Sinister Steel now scales with 75% bonus attack damage and 50% ability power and does physical damage. (Movement speed buff is still here but unchanged) Cooldown is now 3 seconds at all ranks. Total Damage: 55/90/135/160/190 (+50% ability power) (+75% bonus attack damage)
Shunpo now does magical on hit, while proc'ing any on hit effects and spell effects. It deals 4%/8%/12%/16%/20% of the target's maximum health as magic damage plus a scaling per level base damage. Cooldown is now 10 seconds at all ranks. She gains 5%/10%/15%/20%/25% reduced damage and 20% tenacity for 1.5 seconds. Tenacity and reduced damage are reduced each time Voracity is proc'd. This debuff lasts for 10 seconds. This stacks cumulatively, and disappears after Voracity has been proc'd 5 times within 20 seconds.
Total Damage: 45/65/90/115/140 (+4%/8%/12%/16%/20% target's maximum health)
Reduced Damage with:
1 Voracity Debuff: 4%/8%/12%/16%/20%
2 Voracity Debuffs: 3%/6%/9%/12%/15%
3 Voracity Debuffs: 2%/4%/6%/8%/10%
4 Voracity Debuffs: 1%/2%/3%/4%/5%
Tenacity with:
1 Voracity Debuff: 15%
2 Voracity Debuffs: 10%
3 Voracity Debuffs: 5%
4 Voracity Debuffs: No bonus.
Death Lotus now does 200/400/600 damage, and its ratios have been lowered to 150% of her AP and 200% of her overall attack damage. Grievous Wounds are retained. Cooldown is now 60/45/30. The 10 blades that Katarina throws out at a champion every 1/4 of a second are now 5 blades that deal magic damage and 5 that deal physical damage. (Alternatively, Death Lotus loses its Grievous Wounds and now deals true damage) Magic Damage per dagger: 10/20/30 (+7.5% ability power) (+10% overall attack damage) Physical Damage per dagger: 10/20/30 (+7.5% ability power) (+10% overall attack damage) Total Magic Damage: 100/200/300 (+75% ability power) (+100% overall attack damage) Total Physical Damage: 100/200/300 (+75% ability power) (+100% overall attack damage) Total Damage: 200/400/600 (+150% ability power) (+200% overall attack damage) If true damage: True Damage per dagger: 10/20/30 (+7.5% ability power) (+10% overall attack damage) Total True Damage: 200/400/600 (+150% ability power) (+200% overall attack damage)
The changes were to make her seem more hybrid like in the first place, and to make her abilities dual duty. I also shifted some of her power from Death Lotus to her 3 main abilities. The changes are in observance of DFG removal. The
tl;dr Katarina changes are bad because she doesn't look like a hybrid when compared to these champions. These changes above will make her feel like that.
Note: I would still like Katarina the way she is as of 1/22/15, and these changes are only suggested.
Feedback is welcome, and highly encouraged as one person cannot help find a solution on their own.
