Should Lore Impact Gameplay?

With lore changing and updating, should a champion's gameplay change to fulfill their new lore?

  • Ex. Lux's new lore describes her sucking away light when she is stressed out. Should Lux be reworked to include her vision impairing ability, possibly as a new passive? When she is below a certain amount of health she sucks away all of the light around her, meaning she can't directly be attacked or targeted for a few seconds, but skill shots can still land.

Should lore impact a champion's kit at all really? In some cases a champion's gameplay and lore seem to be at odds with one another.

  • Ex. Sivir's lore paints her as the kind of person to think twice before acting, possibly avoiding a fight all together, and expecting a reward for doing anything, yet her gameplay has her running through crowed control, screaming bloody murder, as her team rallies behind her, with one of a kind boomerang blades flying everywhere. Or Ezreal being a dungeon diving, treasure hunting, genius, chosen one, explorer, who has a magical light bow, yet his gameplay is just shoot, shoot, jump shoot, and big shoot.

It definitely helps give you the feeling that you're playing the character. More recent champs have really nailed it.

Kled: A yordle with a mount, who's gameplay differs if he's on it or not. Ivern: A super friendly man who jungles, but never brings any harm to the monsters because he's their friend. Reworked Galio: A proud destroyer of magic with the proper protection, and the best damn entrance that he would be proud of.

All 3 are definitely characters who's playstyle is based off of their actual characters, makes them stand out more, more interesting, and in a lot of ways, more fun. And these are just the first 3 that popped in my head.

Yes, so Ashe can have mobility as an agile ranger.

A mobility ability would be a lot more helpful than her vision ability.

It's good to align gameplay and lore when makeing new content, but i think changeing old content to fit it into lore, eventually new lore at that, is a big mistake. Lore should not be a reason to change existing things, it just should be something to keep in mind when creating new things.

Although I can give reasons as to why even top tier old champions should be reworked, not only to fulfill their new lore, but to just fix what is wrong with them.

Just look at Ezreal, his passive is irrelevant to his caster play style, his W also is irrelevant to his caster play style on top of for some reason giving his support attack speed, and then there is his on hit skill shot which has been a balancing nightmare in nearly every season with every introduction of any on hit item or effect.

Then there is all of the magic damage on old champions who don't need magic damage, and plenty of abilities that are objectively pointless, like Ashe's Hawkshot, Mundo's Agony, Annie's Molten Shield, Malphite, all of the purely passive active abilities, etc.

i bet you also support the theory that if every champion is broken then no champions are broken?

Yaśuo Main1 votes

if you don't have something to compare broken to, then its correct. although there always is something not as strong

No. I just think that champions should have something unique to them, and right now, a lot of old champions don't have anything really unique about them.

What's unique about Ezreal? Well, all 4 of his abilities shoot lasers. He can apply on hit effects with a skill shot. For some reason he can buff his support's attack speed?

It sure would be nice if he could, I don't know, have a treasure finding mechanic, maybe some way to interact with the map, he could have a unique ability that effects traps. SOMETHING to bring his character into his kit.

It depends what the lore is. It works on some and doesn't on others. Fiora is the best example of being broken by lore. You can't have someone who can out duel everyone because they are the grand duelist. Not while top lane is the solo lane island it is. Jax suffered from the same problem being ranked as the greatest duelist and had to be nerfed for it as well.

Lol, AurelionSol would be awesome.

R - Undo existence and rebuild with 10 Ahri waifus

Malphite should get a character size buff then, and along with every single other champion that is large in size

SSmotzer1 votes

I've actually had some ideas about that. I think Malphite could be reworked into 2 champions. 1 is a little yordle perhaps, one who doesn't really do much, but they are followed by 2 giant stone feet. It would basically be Malphites old kit, but involve Malphite's arms coming down and smacking people.

For new champions yes. For older ones it's a bit harder as you already have fans liking old kits and how they work.

I don't know, Galio was an old champion who was changed into a new champion who is a giant punching machine. The lore for a lot of old champions is pretty out dated and could be changed to be just about anything.

If say, they rework Ezreal and instead of 4 laser blasting abilities, he just has 2 and some utility, but then they release a champion who's lore is literally to blast a bunch of lasers everywhere who has a kit really close to classic Ez. I think it would solve the problem of Ez not playing like his archetype while keeping "his kit" intact.

Note that a significant part of the boards insisted Galio wasn't the same champion.

Yes so Kindred can actually kill someone.

What lore. You mean that fanfiction garbage they deleted the canon for. Sure why not who cares.
