How was Support role back in Season 3?

I was tired of Hearing Montecristo and DoA talking about how LCK season 3 championship Bo5 series was the best Bo5 series ever, at least that they had casted, so I watched, and I'll admit I had a great time watching the whole thing, BUT...

I just started playing on March 2015, so some champion picks and item builds seemed weird to me, yet the thing that drew my attention more than anything was how supp was played and built.

There's not much information as a detailed article of sorts that helped me understod the role at that time better, either, so I'm asking people who were around the scene at that time to explain me briefly as the can just which champions were strong, which items were bought, and the overall impact of supports at that time.

Things I observed that seemes relevant or rather of interest to me where:

  1. Since no gold generation starting items were available at the time, at least that I saw, supports were starved of relevant items for at least 10-12 minutes into the game, in which sightstones were rushed, and Ruby sighstones only camed around 22 minutes. So it seems to me that at that pace of income, supports laked any combat stats overall for the whole mid game, and I cannot even imagine how long a match had to prolong for a supp to have full build.
  2. The more popular picks at least on that series were Sona, Fiddlesticks, and Zyra. I guesses that the reason for this was because they all provided some amount of "reliable" hard engage independant of combat stats. I don't guess picks like Leona who as an engage tool take hits a lot was a popular pick at the time just because there was no chance of buying tanky items, no real chance of tanking damage either.
  3. As starved and limited support options were on that series, supports played a HUGE part on the outcome of each match, being either the ones macking plays around the map, or being engaged on.

So, if you can help me understand a little better the Support role as a whole I'll be incredibly thankful, hopefully some supp mains at the time check the boards somewhat regularly cause I'd love their comments.

Basically, it was about which supports had safe reliable sustain/engage/cc while having high base damages that worked independent of Items.

Zyra has 10% CDR on her W, and huge base damages (albeit with lower ratios) than other more poke/ap focused supports, Sona had her massive AoE Stun ult that could single handedly win games alongside massive bundles of stats, and Fiddle still had his point and click 3 second fear along with a massive 5 target bouncing silence, and an AoE ult that did so much damage people were forced to run away from him or risk losing fights.

Overall, they picked supports who could literally 1 handedly win fights through sheer power. All said champions eventually got nerfed because of how game-warping they were. Fiddle's Q got hit hard, while his E eventually got it's mechanics reworked, and Sona got her gameplay update, and Zyra's mana costs got increased with some slight nerfs in damage for some small bumps in ratios (which is why Annie support took over from Zyra).

And zyra need a up now :)

Actually Zyra's doing very well in the midlane with around a 53% winrate.

The percentage of winrate means absolutely nothing because the player who plays can zyra mastery to perfection while 53% is really very little, look at the winrate of aatrox it is quite good as it is one of worst champion of the game.

Morgana was a staple. Janna was another big pick.

Zyra has 10% CDR on her W

Didn't Zyra have 20% CDR on her W? I'm pretty sure it was still there S3.

She might have, I can't remember, I didn't play Zyra then. All I knew was that she had so much damage and free stats that she was one of the best supports because of her ability to function incredibly well without gold.

You spent 80% of your gold income on wards. The other 20% went into aura items.

You were an aura bot.

It sucked.

Sounds like you have some issued of the past haunting you, was it really that bad?

think about the most boring game of league you have ever played, and then add 10 mins of doing nothing.

A lot more passive than it is today. Supports are infinitely more active... they have a bigger role aside from just "Don't let your adc die and drop wards often"

well, fiddle just had a really abusive laning phase and still very potent peeling...zyra and sona both had really strong counter-engages in case you made a mistake. but well, you could play anything that worked low economy - just the same as now. The main difference in S3 had been that supports had a lot more wards to carry with them and could do a lot more to control vision than they can do right now...also, in S3 most junglers didn´t really help out as much with vision, so in the end if you watch the season as a whole it had been pretty much Bengi featuring a supportive-controlled playstyle that led SKT to winning worlds and later on every jungler to take a lot more responsibility in the vision-war. playstyle-wise i prefered S2 though.
