@Riot: You guys want too much out of Death Recap. We just want it to be functional.

Death Recap is one of the oldest and most-broken things right now in League, but Riot keeps putting off updating it because they want it to be able to tell you "what you did wrong". Honestly, that is biting off more than you can chew.

We don't need a program to tell us what we did wrong in a scenario. We just want the Death Recap to tell us what damage was dealt, who killed us, and with what skills, and to have it WORK PROPERLY!

Seriously, drop the "education" path and go with the one WE want. If someone needs to learn a lesson about overextending, let people who are harassing him do that.

Yeah. I've had it with being attacked by 5 people and it listing Minions over one of the champions even though they didn't even do 1% of my HP, and with being killed by Revive WHICH ISN'T EVEN IN THE GAME ANYMORE.

Is Sunfire's Cape still bugged in recap? o.O

Xx420n0sc0p3sxX9 votes

Don't you love taking true damage from a minion with a Lux picture on it?

Yeah I figured.

A Miss Fortune1 votes

They both do the same amount of damage anyways.

From what I understand, Death Recap actually has all the correct information... in a log file buried in the League of Legends directory. The problem is Death Recap only lists the top sources it thinks are useful, instead of giving us all the data for us the check.

What we really need is a UI that allows us to review any Death Recap while we are dead and after we respawn. Using features that the post game screen uses to sort damage and include CC time and type.

No matter how smart the AI of Death Recap becomes, it will never be able to tell us what exactly we did wrong, since we may be looking for different information altogether than what it expects.

Edit: It seems some people are misunderstanding me. The Death Recap Log is accurate and is the data sent to Riot after the game. The problem is the Death Recap AI has no idea how to interpret that data and mostly spits out garbage, which is what we see in game.

That's my problem with it. Riot wants the impossible when they should be going with something more practical.

Like when death recap says you took 3000-4000 damage over 5 seconds or something and then only shows like 300-900 damage... it is like okay... and what really killed me?

KaisadiIIa6 votes

17 damage from Purple Caster Minion. Gotta build a Thornmail so that minion won't kill you anymore.

Kitten of Evil2 votes

Wait but if it's a caster minion, shouldn't it deal magic damage?

He kinda rips pages out of his spell book and balls them up to throw at you.

Hes not very good at his job.

Kitten of Evil2 votes

Does he shout "take this scroll and stick it... somewhere safe!" as he attacks?

Legalisskull3 votes

I completely agree. If it would just give an accurate "recap" of how much damage we took from every source (champion spells, red buff, items (Liandry's/Ludens), neutral monsters, etc..) then we as players can deduce what we need to change about our play. Although a computer could technically do this, I believe it would be a lot more efficient to simply give us information and let us sort through it.

There is no way this is true. It's not that is only gives the sources it thinks is useful (Which 90% of the time are not. Seriously, blue caster minion only did 1% get him off my screen), it's also that it straight up lies with what damage was done.

Do you really think that the fed Katarina only did 53 damage with her ult? Is that even possible? How about revive doing 11% of my HP, that sounds reasonable considering it isn't even in the game anymore.

The death recap is useless most of the time. The only thing you can get out of it is, "Well, I see mainly purple numbers instead of red. I mean, the damage doesn't add up to 100% of my HP, but I guess I'll build MR." That's what it comes down to now since there is almost never a time where the numbers add up to your HP you have.

rampaging poet9 votes

This. I'd settle for an accurate estimate of how much combined physical, magic, and true damage I took instead of just nine sources that together took only 20% of my HP. The only question that leaves is whether to build something with an attack speed slow or just more health/resistances, and that should be obvious from context. Just knowing I mostly died to one type or another gives way more information about what to build next then that Lux's Q did 10% of my health or whatever.

Nilok2 votes

When I say "sources it thinks are useful", it don't mean it is accurate in the least. Death Recap or horribly out of date and its metrics are broken, but it 'thinks' it's useful information.

Riot just needs to build a UI and expose all the raw data they have relating to your death instead of hiding it behind a sub-par AI.

And yes, they are logging everything.

KaisadiIIa1 votes

How about revive doing 11% of my HP

Afaik "revive damage" is actually damage taken from Sunfire cape.

DrCyanide2 votes

Congradulations, you know what it's actually from! Now get Riot to actually show it as coming from Sunfire cape!

KaisadiIIa1 votes

We have not reach that technology yet.

DrCyanide2 votes

"That technology" = Save a copy of "sunfire_cape.png" as "revive.png" and rename "Revive" to "Sunfire Cape".

I should get a job at Riot!

WhiteFireOCN2 votes

For the most part, I don't ever have any of the problems mentioned here for some reason.

Most of the numbers I see are realistic

A Miss Fortune3 votes

It's realistic if you're a level 1 cannon minion main lol.

A Miss Fortune1 votes

I thought for a while it was just a glitch with my own game and just me alone until people started complaining that Jayce did 1 true damage (even though he's on my team and not even alive) with his auto attack to me with blurry layers of text under it and other crazy stuff like that.

LeeDark2 votes

No, when REVIVE, a summoner spell that no longer exists, got the killing blow on me with 9 true damage, Death Recap obviously does NOT have all the correct information.

Nilok1 votes

Again, the correct information is saved in a log file on your computer that is reported to Riot, the Death Recap AI (the program that is meant to parse the information) can't correctly interpret the data anymore because it hasn't been updated for a while and instead displays bogus information.

Heckin Support7 votes

So tired of dieing in a teamfight and seeing how much damage minions dealt to me, sorakas auto attacks, and revive dealing damage to myself. I want to see how much damage the enemy mid laner is dealing, how much the adc is dealing not this useless information.

Kitten of Evil6 votes

I think it would also be useful to have death recap accessible after you respawn, particularly earlier in the game when respawn timers are fairly low.

usul12021 votes

Sion agrees.

usul12023 votes

I (~2K health cass) was killed by 1003 physical damage Jayce AA. thats it. 1003 damage in 5 seconds, for 100% of my health. I love death recap, its hilarious, while being oh so useful -_-

Silents4291 votes

Define this "we" because a few months ago someone posted a death recap idea that follows this that had a ton of votes.

LeeDark1 votes

Ok, yes. Pie in the sky, this would be awesome kind of dreams... A death recap that actually teaches you what you did wrong would be great.

NEVER ACTUALLY GOING TO HAPPEN. The AI required for that to be accurate is incredibly complex for a system most people won't even use often. So, if they one day decide to actually invest that much in one feature, great... but how about, until then, they just fix what's fucking broken?

Silents4291 votes

Pardon my aggressive tone, I feel it gets the point across better. But,

Are you serious?

All it has to do is tell us the correct information and include more, that is what they plan to do, and that is what they imply by having us learn from it. Are you some kind of a dumbass and think it giving us helpful information to learn from is suddenly bad or what? Did you expect them to quote a mobaguide everytime you die, or after Riven kills you they bring up her champion spotlight ingame to help you?

Holy mother of god the ignorance on how video games work is astounding, Or ANY programming. Do you know the game already has all the information for a death recap setup? And all they need to do is make the death recap give proper information that already exists? No you probably didn't know that, considering you decided to call it "AI" and "incredibly complex" and how is a system every person on League has used and uses ironically not going to get used?

Like seriously I can't even fathom how you can't understand how easy this is going to be to implement, or how dumb this statement is..

but how about, until then, they just fix what's fucking broken?

If you can't see how fixing something in itself isn't already an improvement since what they are doing IS fixing it to what they intended it to be then just get out.

LeeDark2 votes

You're not pardoned, since most of what you said was WRONG. You can be wrong, or you can be a giant ass, but you don't get to be both.

What Riot wants from the Death Recap is a teaching tool. Not just what killed you, but WHY you died. Fixing it to just show WHAT killed you would be fucking easy. They aren't doing that because they want more. Do you fucking get it, dumbass?

Seriously, I can't fathom why you'd come into a thread to talk about something when you don't even have a fucking clue what has already been said about it. If you are just going to talk out of your ass, the get the fuck out. Given that your last sentence only barely even makes sense, I shouldn't have expected much.

Silents4291 votes

And that was its purpose. A death recap to show you what you did wrong. A teaching tool.

And you are complaining that they shouldn't make it better just "fixed"

So who cares if you don't want it to be helpful to players? The rest of us that actually attempt to learn from deaths will love it, And you thinking it is going to involve "complex AI" doesn't matter, you never really said a reason against it other then it being too hard.

And I am still not fully sure what you think it implies by teaching us, if it is going to tell us how we died, which it already does anyway but more accurate and detailed then what the hell are you bitching about?

LeeDark1 votes

No, not how you died. WHY. There's a difference. And that is the problem. Accounting for everything to sift out a final reason why you died is complex. It isn't just numbers.

What that means, ultimately, is the death recap will remain broken for at least, I'm betting, two more full seasons. While they could just FIX it by next patch. See the difference now?

Silents4291 votes

No where have they explained exactly how it is going to work so you have no grounds to get pissy about it. It IS just numbers, its a matter of putting those numbers into something readable.

You seriously think it is going to take 2 years for them to update the death recap? Gtfo

Yes I do. Given that recap has been broken for like 2 seasons now, I'd be very confident in saying it will be 2+ years. There are so many features that take them soooo long to finish. This will be one of them.

Silents4291 votes

That logic is incredibly stupid and narrow minded.

The death recap has always been broken, but this is a simple thing to fix just never got priority because it wasn't demanded for until this season started. It isn't going to take them over 2 years to fix it.

No, it hasn't always been broken. And if it has actually always been broken-- that means that its taken them SIX YEARS OF WORK TO STILL NOT FIX IT, making my claim even MORE believable.

If it was simple to fix and they wanted to fix it, they would have. Its pretty clear they aren't working on it.

Silents4291 votes

They have recent blog posts detailing upcoming changes for it. A lot more then just fixing it is needed, because in order for it to be useful it needs changes beyond just bug fixing for it.

It has always been broken but a tacked on feature no one brought to attention until recently with there new focus on clarity.

Saying it is taking them 6 years is utterly stupid unless 6 years ago they told us they were going to fix it otherwise why bother fix something that no one at the time cared about when more important things existed.

Honestly if your only stance about this is to just harp at Riot for not getting things done in a timely manner then you may as well just be quiet and get proven wrong with the death recap changes crop up in PBE within the next few months.

Jamnon1 votes

The learning curve has always been steep in League. Riot knows this is a problem but putting this in the death recap is the worst place to provide such feedback.

Deaths only last some seconds and that is not enough time to digest such feedback. Numbers: HOW did I die? AP. Cass did a ton of damage to me. I should buy MR or w/e. AD. Darius killed me. I should buy thorns or w/e.

So easy.

MalzaharAnyLane2 votes

Don't forget that there needs to be a proper explanation for mixed damage somewhere, but that still doesn't mean Death Recap should be giving tactics lessons.

Jamnon2 votes

I dont know how Riot thought that X seconds while dead was a good place to put a tutorial.

Sirin Gioro1 votes

For some reason revive always deal like 1000 damage to me :^)

Glitter Spitter1 votes

i rarely look at the death recap, because i know who or what killed me... idk ive never found it to useful but thats just me. im not a big "numbers" guy. i kind just see "o LB is 12/0 i need mr" :P

Qsario1 votes

I liked the death where all the text was overlapping and there was only an assist, but no killer. Though the times self damage from revive has killed me are up there, too.

Seriously, just show us the breakdown of the damage that killed us and how many people were credited with kills/assists. I don't give a damn about the rest, but I kinda want to know if I need more MR, Armor or HP and the current one is completely useless.

Magnathar1 votes

Had to read this like 3 times... kept reading it as "Deathcap" haha...

I think it should list all sources of dmg over a longer period of time.... sometimes your health gets chunked before you atually die, and when you do it will just be whatever damage your remaining hp and not reflect what actually happened.
