Speak to us about Solo Queue

New Champ Select Update

Hey guys, we know there are a lot of players who are really passionate about solo queue. We're not trying to be dishonest or dodge this topic. Radio silence on this the past couple months has been painful, we know. We hoped to come out with a direct answer to this, but working through the problems players are facing on live now (consistency around position select, queue times and matchmaking for high MMR) is taking longer than we initially expected. We did a bad job at managing expectations around this and deserve the heat we're getting around that.

That being said, solo queue does not directly address either of these problems and could suffer from the exact same problems. We'll be honest: there's definitely a world in which solo queue doesn't return, but we'd rather keep it on the table as we work through these issues before making a final decision.

"We're not trying to be dishonest or dodge this topic" You're a liar. TONS of threads have been made about this topic. Just yesterday Riot Korea confirmed that solo queue was officially on hold (https://www.reddit.com/r/leagueoflegends/comments/4dwkar/official_riot_temporarily_put_a_hold_on_solo/) and there has been even more threads posted about this exact subject and what do we hear from Riot? Is that crickets chirping in the distance I hear? Moving on.

"That being said, solo queue does not directly address either of these problems and could suffer from the exact same problems" You're wrong. If you only have to deal with individual players picking and choosing roles you have one less factor to take into consideration when designing a system to automatically match parties of relatively equal MMR, along with getting good consistency between main and secondary roles, all while getting faster queue times. Right now you're trying to balance party size, MMR, role choice, AND queue time. Remove party size as a factor and you have a considerably easier job to do.

"We'll be honest: there's definitely a world in which solo queue doesn't return, but we'd rather keep it on the table as we work through these issues before making a final decision." You're not doing anything to alleviate any of the concerns that we have with this last statement. You've said nothing official on this topic since making this post. I've been trying to find actual discussion and this is the only thing you've done. A blanket statement analogous to washing your hands of the issue. You blatantly lied to us, and have done nothing at all to address that fact. A simple conversation on the topic would go a long way, even if we'd still be pretty upset with the answers. And no, Phreak commenting on /r/leagueoflegends while avoiding actually addressing the questions does not count.

[zombie-brand-clap] Great fucking job you've done, really stellar work.

If Riot Lied

I don't think anyone wanted DQ as a replacement for SQ. Having both is fine. DQ is like more intense normals so it doesn't matter that queue configurations are lumped together into one ranking but there should be something for serious players too. The competitive aspect is the reason I played this game over DoTA 2 initially but Riot seems to no longer care about competitive integrity and the validity of their ranking systems.

A ladder has to reflect a consistent experience for all participants so that everyone can actually be compared (otherwise why even have a ladder with rankings?). Solo and 5s are very different experiences and the skillsets aren't the same either. Mixing all the queue configurations lacks predictive power based on the ranking if players are predominantly playing one or the other and it just doesn't make sense while also creating higher variance for rankings.

This is a fundamental problem with the system and I'd say the same whether I was Bronze or Diamond. The rankings have lost the respect (at least in my eyes) they held regarding individual skill so it's hard to be motivated by self-improvement anymore.

BTW: As shown on Reddit, it lets people create effective "cheese" comps. and strategies which they execute every game pretty much the same as reciting a poem. For example (hypothetical), Malphite Top, Yasuo Mid, Corki ADC, Braum Support, Gragas Jungle every game with nearly no deviation or adaptation from game to game.

Right now remodding Skyrim, Fallout 3/NV/4, Oblivion or even fucking Morrowind is better than waiting 20min to get me into a ranked game at Diamond with 4 premade fucks vs 5 premade fucks, then have everyone blame it on the lone guy.

Fuck this game. I still like it but I can't enjoy it under these conditions. "But get some friends!" Bs incoming. I don't want, I want to be alone, I spend my whole day at an hospital talking, studying, helping, dealing with bs and stress. This game was a superb escape at home. It is no longer. **Fuck you Riot. **

I've been saying that ever since I read that dynamic is coming. I couldn't believe that shit, when I first read it. I only play normals now, which is sad. I tried getting into dynamic, but every time I got some fucked up premade, or just the usual my premade < enemy premade. I'm waiting on solo q, not touching ranked, which is also sad, because I got diamond last season and had higher hopes this time.

Perhaps a different take on this issue. Instead of hoping for SoloQ to return, we could (maybe) make Dynamic queue more fair and actually work.

I've just created a thread to suggest an idea that might fix this issue. The idea is basically that when people go premade, they will share a pool of MMR (the sum of MMR that they would normally get) which will be distributed based on their Grading Score (in addition to current rules). This means that the total MMR this groups gains or loses will stay the same, but more MMR is given to the individuals in this premade group that carried and less to those that got carried. For this to work, the system has to be able to estimate how much a player is expected to score (a Gold I premading with a silver V is expected to score a lot higher than his comrad).

If you want to read more about it, I created a wall of text in this thread: http://boards.na.leagueoflegends.com/en/c/gameplay-balance/XjE4MKI5-suggestion-to-make-dynamic-queue-fair

The reason I will never play dynamic queue is because I do not want to play ranked with my friends. I have seen how serious some of them get when playing ranked. They get upset at the smallest mistakes they/anyone makes and start raging at me (I am not even close to how skilled they are) when I make a mistake. Getting upset at my friends because of a video game is stupid, so if I ever play ranked I prefer to play solo.

If you guys will never release solo que, then can you at least make it so that a solo player doesn't get matched with a 4 man stack ? no matter how badly they are playing, it will always be MY fault that we are losing the game. IDK if its still there, but in DOTA 2 there was a time when you could not play ranked with 4 people.

"That being said, solo queue does not directly address either of these problems and could suffer from the exact same problems."

Really? Because I don't think I've had that much trouble with the old Soloq as much as the new dynamic Q. Not to mention dynamic Q created even more problems that made ranked not even ranked. It's just normals. There's no competitiveness when you get your friends to carry you or you're put in a 4 man premades and pray to god the 4 man premades aren't dicks.

So I just played with a 4 man premade in ranked. These guys were surprisingly pleasant. They even invited me to their discord call so I was able to communicate effectively with them in game. Overall it was a fun game.

But it didn't feel competitive at all.

The enemy team also appeared to be a 4+1 judging by their club tags. Early game went in their favor and despite our communication we didn't really put any of that to use. Our ADC was very obviously not on the same level as everyone else and I wouldn't call it a stretch to claim he was getting carried by the rest of his teammates. I managed to turn the game around by calling out their baron attempt and we managed to get a good collapse, acing them and securing baron ourselves. From there on it was just a steamroll down midlane, nothing the enemy team could have done. The entire game was just random movement and ganks with no real objective until the enemy team threw at baron. Not once did it feel competitive, and that's something I miss about old solo queue.

But my teammates were nice guys so that's ok I guess.
