For being a braindead champ, Garen requires a lot of micro-management

Since he sucks so hard and gets outtraded by all other juggernauts, by some tanks, By Yasuo, Olaf, Pantheon, Fiora, Irelia, Jax, Renekton probably Camille too, he has no gap closers for the ranged match-ups.

I watched Riste a little bit(reached Challenger on Garen), so you have to know when to stop a trade, give up CS, stay away and wait for the regen, how to itemize(sometimes this guy goes armor 1st, sometimes Cleaver, rarely Trinity and almost never lethality), what runes to take(Phase Rush/Glacier Augument are options over Grasp vs certain match-ups).

No joke, but even with Garen being braindead, actually winning lane on this champ requires a lot of micromanagement. And he isn't godtier splitpusher/tower taker and falls off hard in teamfights.

His villain mechanic for shutting down fed carries and the crazy lv11 regen it's why Garen is even playable.

He is also decent at coming back from behind if your team helps, you just press R in teamfights on the mage or ADC.

what youre talking about is more game knowledge than micromanagement.

that being said, garen does actually have more micromanagement to his abilities than people tend to give credit for.

the slow cleanse on his q, the mini fiora parry on his w, and the isolation damage on his spin are all massive factors to his ability to actually take trades with people.

his ult against non villains is also a factor that is often overlooked. getting as close to the execute threshold as possible and still killing the target is definitely not trivial. you can see this on the rare occations when really skilled pro players pick up garen for the memes and fail their executes and watch the enemy get away.

its true that he needs allot of micromanagement: controlling the minion wave is 10x more important due to the only 'outplay' in his being almost always revolving around flash.

That being said the real reason he's awful in higher ELO is due to the sheer amount of bad match-ups he has.

currently almost ALL meta-top laners counter him in 1 way or another, with most of these match-ups requiring patience and game knowledge on the garen players part to win.

the reason Riste made it to challenger is because he knows these matchups and how to turn them into winning games, trough precise tweaking the build path and knowing when you can capitalize on mistakes or when his opening for a play is there.

even then he's bound to lose games: his bot lane can get shit on and garen has little power to stop an fed ADC + support when their CC is strong and he has not yet gotten the chance to build a lead.

he's dreadfully aware of the weaknesses he brings into his team comp and yet plays so well that he can turn games around. trough dedication and patience can he wear his opponent down and take the lead from them, and then keep it.

all these reason are points why i believe that Garen is one of THE hardest champs to play in higher ELO and why riste firmly deserves his spot in challenger.

That's all.

Honestly, he could use an update. Not like a massive one, but one that can give him a good juggernaut feel (Think Morgana update + Ez update). I feel like he could get a different Q and possibly a different passive (or better updated), W could use a change or two, E same thing, and R could use a touch up and a new 6+ system.

Villain sucks flat out as is, its inconsistent and barely provides Garen anything but low true damage but the ability to make his R completely true damage. High true damage abilities regardless of how it happens is a sin. Darius' is gated behind needing 5 stacks and he's easily kite-able, but he needs work too. There is a way to give this beginner champ some type of mastery progression without making it too hard on newer players, they just need to do it.

We dont have to get rid of all the micro management or game knowledge usage for him, but we also dont need to massively overload it like it is now to the point his kit's age is showing.

lots of micro-management

literally every champion.

It takes a lot of micro management to play anything in Challenger

Just like most of the juggernauts, you have to be 10 steps ahead of more mobile/ranged opponents mentally to make up for their limited kits, especially the older ones.
